The Charity Gala

By Wednesday morning, Kampala’s newspapers carried a single headline. THE CEO'S MYSTERY FIANCÉE TO APPEAR AT THE OKELLO FOUNDATION GALA Amina folded the newspaper and sighed. “I haven’t even attended the event yet, and they are already discussing me.” Daniel looked up from his coffee. “People are curious.” “They are curious because they think I do not belong.” He was silent for a moment. “Then prove them wrong.” --- That afternoon, Grace arrived carrying a large white garment bag. “It is time to get ready.” Amina unzipped the bag and gasped. Inside was a stunning emerald-green evening gown, adorned with delicate beadwork that shimmered in the light. “It is beautiful.” Grace smiled. “It was designed especially for you.” “I have never worn anything like this.” “Tonight will be a first in many ways.” --- An hour later, Amina stood before the mirror. Her hair had been styled in soft waves, and the elegant gown fit her perfectly. She barely recognized herself. A knock sounded at the door. “Ready?” Daniel asked from outside. She opened it. For the first time since they had met, Daniel appeared momentarily speechless. He was dressed in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo. “You look...” he began. Amina waited. “...beautiful.” She felt her cheeks warm. “Thank you.” “You clean up rather well yourself,” she replied with a shy smile. A hint of amusement crossed his face. “I will accept that as a compliment.” --- The ballroom glittered beneath crystal chandeliers, filled with elegantly dressed guests. Business leaders, politicians, celebrities, and journalists occupied the room. The moment Daniel and Amina entered, camera flashes illuminated the entrance. “Mr. Okello!” “This way!” “Miss Amina, over here!” Daniel leaned closer and said quietly, “Smile.” “I feel as though I should run.” “I know.” Without warning, he offered her his arm. She slipped hers through it. Immediately, the photographers began taking even more pictures. --- Inside the ballroom, Grandma greeted them with tears of joy. “My handsome grandson... and my beautiful granddaughter.” She embraced Amina warmly. “You look perfect together.” Amina smiled, though guilt tugged at her heart. She hated deceiving such a kind woman. --- As the evening progressed, Amina found herself speaking with guests about education, business, and community initiatives. To her surprise, many were impressed. “You are very intelligent,” one investor remarked. “I can see why Daniel admires you.” Across the room, Daniel overheard the exchange. A small smile appeared on his face. For someone who claimed to dislike attention, Amina carried herself with remarkable grace. --- But not everyone was pleased. Vanessa watched from the far side of the ballroom. Every laugh Amina shared with Daniel felt like an insult. She turned to a waiter. “I need your assistance with something.” The waiter hesitated. “What is it, madam?” She slipped an envelope into his hand. “Simply follow my instructions.” The waiter glanced at the money, then nodded. Moments later, he approached Amina carrying a tray of sparkling drinks. As he drew near, his foot suddenly caught on the edge of the carpet. The tray tilted. The glasses flew toward Amina. She closed her eyes— But before a single drop touched her dress, a strong arm pulled her out of the way. The glasses crashed onto the marble floor, shattering into dozens of pieces. Daniel stood between Amina and the broken glass, one hand still around her waist. “Are you hurt?” he asked. She shook her head. “I am fine.” Their eyes met. For a brief moment, the noise of the ballroom faded away. Neither of them noticed Grandma smiling from across the room. “They are falling in love,” she whispered to herself. Not far away, Vanessa clenched her fists. Her first plan had failed. And she had no intention of giving up.
