The woman who knew everything

763 Words
The photograph remained on the screen. Nobody spoke. Daniel stared at it as if staring long enough could change what he was seeing. His grandmother. The woman who raised him. The woman who stayed when everyone else disappeared. The woman who always told him that family was the most important thing. Standing beside his father... And the leader of the Phoenix Alliance. --- "No." Daniel shook his head. "That doesn't make sense." Amina watched him carefully. "Daniel..." "She wouldn't." His voice became quieter. "She couldn't." Grace looked at the photograph again. "The image could be edited." Daniel looked at her. A small sign of hope appeared in his eyes. "Can you prove it?" Grace nodded. "I'll try." --- At the mansion, Grandma Eleanor sat quietly in the garden. When Daniel arrived, she already knew. "You found it." Daniel stopped. That sentence hurt more than the photograph. "You knew I would find it?" Eleanor looked at him sadly. "Yes." Amina stood beside Daniel. "Then tell us the truth." Grandma looked toward the old trees. "I was hoping you would never have to carry this burden." Daniel's expression hardened. "You don't get to decide that anymore." The words were painful. But true. --- Eleanor took a deep breath. "The Phoenix Alliance was created to protect businesses." Daniel frowned. "Protect?" "At first." She looked down. "But power changes people." "They stopped protecting companies." "They started controlling them." Amina listened carefully. "And your father?" Eleanor closed her eyes. "Your father discovered what they had become." --- Daniel stepped closer. "You were part of it." Eleanor nodded. "Yes." The answer shocked him. "For how long?" "Before you were born." Silence. "I joined because I believed I could control the damage." "But I was wrong." --- Eleanor explained that Daniel's father wanted to leave the Alliance. He wanted to expose their illegal actions. "But leaving was not simple," she said. "They didn't allow people to walk away." Daniel's voice lowered. "What happened to my father?" Eleanor looked at him. "The night he died, he was meeting someone." "Who?" She hesitated. "Me." --- Everyone became silent. "You were with him?" Eleanor nodded. "He gave me evidence." "What evidence?" "The names of everyone involved." Daniel's hands tightened. "Then why didn't you reveal it?" Tears filled Eleanor's eyes. "Because I was afraid." "For the first time in my life, I was afraid." --- Daniel looked away. His entire life had been built on trust. Now every person he loved had a hidden chapter. Amina reached for his hand. He held on. Not because he wasn't hurt. Because he needed to remember he wasn't alone. --- Suddenly, Grace rushed into the room. "Daniel." Everyone turned. "We found something." She placed a tablet on the table. "The photograph is real." Daniel looked at her. "And?" Grace hesitated. "The date." She pointed at the screen. "This was taken six months before your father's death." Amina frowned. "That means..." Grace nodded. "Eleanor was still connected to the Phoenix Alliance when the accident happened." --- Daniel looked at his grandmother. "Did you know Richard was planning the accident?" Eleanor didn't answer immediately. That silence was enough. Amina covered her mouth. "Grandma..." Eleanor quickly shook her head. "No." Her voice broke. "I knew something was wrong." "I knew Richard was dangerous." "But I didn't know his plan." Daniel searched her face. "Do you expect me to believe that?" Eleanor looked at him. "I don't expect anything." "I only want you to know one thing." "What?" "Your father died trying to protect you." --- Before Daniel could respond, the mansion security alarm sounded. Again. Everyone froze. A guard rushed in. "Sir!" "What happened?" The guard looked nervous. "Someone entered through the east gate." "Who?" The guard handed Daniel an envelope. "No one." "Only this was left behind." --- Daniel opened it slowly. Inside was a single page. A list of names. At the top was written: PHOENIX ALLIANCE MEMBERS Daniel scanned the names. Richard. Anthony. Edward. And Eleanor. Then he reached the bottom. A new name appeared. A name that made his blood run cold. Because it belonged to someone who had never been suspected. Someone who had been helping them find the truth. Someone who had been standing beside them from the beginning. Amina Hassan. Daniel looked up. Everyone saw the shock on his face. Amina stepped back. "What?" Daniel couldn't speak. The person behind the message wanted them to believe Amina was part of the Alliance. But the question was no longer just who was guilty. It was: Who was powerful enough to make everyone look guilty?
