The enemy among us

The photograph remained on the screen. Nobody spoke. Daniel stared at the image of his office. His own chair. His own desk. And someone sitting there like they belonged. Like they had been waiting. --- Amina looked around the room. "Who had access to Daniel's office?" Everyone became quiet. The answer was uncomfortable. Too many people. Too many secrets. Too much trust. Daniel slowly locked his phone. "We stop guessing." He looked at Grace. "We investigate." --- The first person they questioned was Michael. He looked offended. "Daniel, after everything we've been through?" Daniel's expression softened. "I trust you." "Then why ask?" "Because this isn't personal." "It's about finding the truth." Michael nodded. "I understand." --- Then came Grace. She sat across from Daniel calmly. "I know what you're thinking." Daniel looked at her. "What?" "That everyone close to you has a secret." He said nothing. Grace smiled sadly. "And now you wonder if I'm another one." Amina stepped closer. "Grace, nobody is accusing you." "I know." Grace looked at Daniel. "But I also know how it feels to be suspected." --- The investigation revealed something strange. The person in the photograph had entered Daniel's office at midnight. No alarms. No forced doors. No security alerts. Impossible. Until Grace discovered one detail. "The cameras weren't turned off." Daniel frowned. "Then how wasn't the person recorded?" Grace looked at him. "Because they were never recognized as a stranger." --- Amina understood first. "The system allowed them in." Grace nodded. "Exactly." Someone had the highest level of access. Someone the security system trusted completely. --- Daniel returned to his office alone. He looked around. The place where he made decisions. The place where he built his future. Now it felt unfamiliar. Then he noticed something on his desk. A small envelope. No name. No address. Only one word. "Remember." --- Inside was an old newspaper clipping. Daniel read the headline. "Young Businessman Saves Family Company After Father's Death." Below it was a photograph of him. A younger Daniel. Standing beside Edward. His father's best friend. But behind the picture was a handwritten note. "You never asked why Edward was there the night your father died." --- Daniel froze. Edward. Again. He immediately called him. No answer. He called again. Nothing. Then a message appeared. From Edward. "It's time you hear the truth from me." Attached was a location. --- Daniel showed Amina. "I'm going." She shook her head. "Not alone." He smiled slightly. "You know I was going to say no." "I know." "And you were going to ignore me." "Exactly." For the first time in days, Daniel laughed. A real laugh. A small reminder that despite everything... They were still them. --- They arrived at the location. An old office building. Inside, Edward was waiting. He looked older than before. Tired. Like someone who had carried a heavy secret for too long. "I knew you would come." Daniel stood across from him. "Tell me everything." Edward nodded. "I owe you that." --- Edward opened an old file. "Your father didn't die because he lost a fight." "He died because he won." Daniel frowned. "What does that mean?" Edward looked at him. "Your father discovered the Shadow Circle's leader." "And he was preparing to expose them." "Who was the leader?" Edward hesitated. Then slowly placed a photograph on the table. Daniel picked it up. His face changed. Because the person in the picture was someone he never expected. Someone who had always acted like family. Someone whose betrayal would hurt more than any enemy. Edward whispered: "The person who ordered everything..." "...was your own grandfather." --- Daniel stepped back. "No." Edward nodded sadly. "Your family's war started long before you were born." "And now..." "You have inherited the final battle."
