The guest at the wedding

635 Words
Daniel stood completely still. Grace's words echoed in his mind. "The leader of the Shadow Circle is someone who attended your wedding." His wedding. A day that was supposed to be the happiest moment of his life. A day filled with promises. A day filled with people he loved. Now even that memory felt surrounded by shadows. --- Amina noticed his expression. "Daniel?" He looked at her. "Someone from our wedding." Her face changed. "Who?" "I don't know yet." But deep down, Daniel already feared the answer. --- They gathered everyone at the mansion. Grace connected her laptop to the main screen. "I traced the Shadow Circle records." "Most of the information was hidden." "Whoever leads them has spent years covering their identity." Michael crossed his arms. "So how did you find them?" Grace looked at Daniel. "Because they wanted to be found." The room became silent. "What do you mean?" Amina asked. Grace opened a file. "The leader left a message." She played the recording. A calm voice filled the room. "Daniel Okello." "You have spent your entire life searching for enemies." "But you never asked why I stayed." Daniel's eyes narrowed. The voice sounded familiar. Very familiar. --- The recording continued. "I watched you grow." "I watched you become CEO." "I watched you fall in love." "And I waited." The message ended. Everyone looked at Daniel. "Do you recognize the voice?" He closed his eyes. Then opened them. "Yes." Amina looked at him. "Who?" Daniel whispered: "Edward." --- Nobody spoke. Edward. Again. The man who had guided him. The man who claimed he was protecting him. The man who always appeared when Daniel needed advice. --- Grace shook her head. "It can't be that simple." "Why?" "Because Edward isn't just connected to the Shadow Circle." She opened another file. "He's been fighting them too." Daniel frowned. "What?" "Look." The records showed Edward blocking several Shadow Circle operations over the years. Amina looked confused. "Then what is he?" Grace answered: "A person caught between two worlds." --- Daniel immediately went to find Edward. He found him in the old office building. This time, Edward didn't run. He simply waited. "You know." Daniel's voice was cold. "You are the leader?" Edward looked at him. "No." Daniel studied his face. "Then why does everyone point to you?" Edward sighed. "Because I was the closest person to the truth." --- Edward revealed the final piece. After Daniel's grandfather lost control of the Phoenix Alliance, a new person took over. Someone more dangerous. Someone who didn't care about family. Someone who believed fear was the best way to control people. "Who?" Edward looked at Daniel. "I don't know." Daniel frowned. "You don't know?" Edward shook his head. "The leader never showed their face." --- Then Edward handed Daniel a small box. "Your father left this with me." Daniel opened it. Inside was a wedding invitation. His own wedding invitation. Amina looked confused when she saw it later. "Why would your father leave something connected to our wedding?" Daniel turned it over. There was a message written behind it. "The person who stands closest during your happiest day may be the person closest to your greatest danger." --- That night, Daniel reviewed every guest list. Family. Friends. Business partners. Everyone. Then he stopped. One name. One person who had attended quietly. One person nobody questioned. Because they were considered harmless. Amina saw his face. "Who is it?" Daniel slowly turned the list around. Her eyes widened. Because the name was: Peter Wekesa. --- The man who revealed Anthony's secrets. The man who helped them find the truth. The man they trusted. The man who had been guiding them since the beginning. Daniel whispered: "We were looking for someone hiding in the shadows." "But the shadow was standing beside us."
