The Secret That Changed Everything

628 Words
The hospital room felt colder after Michael's confession. Amina stood completely still. "My father's death?" The words came out as a whisper. Michael looked at her with regret. "I should have told you years ago." Daniel moved closer. "Michael, what exactly do you know?" Michael closed his eyes, gathering his strength. "After the factory accident, your father discovered that Richard had hidden evidence." Amina listened carefully. "What evidence?" "The safety reports." Michael swallowed. "Richard had changed the records to make it look like the factory was safe." Daniel's expression darkened. "And your father found out." Michael nodded. "He planned to expose him." --- Amina sat beside the hospital bed. "Then why didn't he?" Michael looked away. "Because someone warned him." "Who?" The room went silent. Finally, Michael answered. "Lydia." Amina's heart sank. "The woman who worked with my father?" "Yes." --- Later that day, Daniel and Amina returned to the mansion. Neither spoke during the drive. When they arrived, Amina went straight to her room. Daniel found her sitting beside the window. She was holding an old photograph of her father. "I keep remembering him smiling," she said quietly. Daniel sat beside her. "He loved you." "How do you know?" "Because a man who fought to expose corruption wasn't fighting for himself." "He was fighting for the people he cared about." Amina looked at him. "You always know what to say." He smiled faintly. "No." "I just know what it feels like to lose someone and never get answers." --- The next morning, Daniel made a decision. "We find Lydia." Amina nodded. "I want to come." He looked concerned. "This could be painful." "So can not knowing the truth." He understood. --- Grace tracked Lydia's last known address. An hour later, Daniel, Amina, and Grace arrived at a quiet neighborhood. The house looked ordinary. Too ordinary. Daniel knocked. No answer. He knocked again. Still nothing. Grace checked her phone. "Her car is registered here." Daniel looked around. "She knows we're coming." Suddenly, a voice came from behind them. "You shouldn't have searched for me." They turned. Lydia stood across the road. Older than the photographs. But the same person. Amina stepped forward. "Why did you lie about my father?" Lydia's face showed pain. "I didn't want this to happen." Daniel's voice hardened. "But it did." Lydia looked at him. "You have no idea what you're uncovering." "Then tell us." She looked around nervously. "Not here." --- Inside the old house, Lydia finally sat down. For several minutes, she said nothing. Then she opened a drawer. She removed a small diary. "I wrote everything down because I knew one day the truth would come out." She handed it to Amina. "My father?" Lydia nodded. "Your father was the bravest man I ever knew." Amina's eyes filled with tears. "Then why did you betray him?" Lydia looked down. "Because Richard threatened my family." Silence. "He knew my weaknesses." "He knew I was afraid." Daniel frowned. "You helped him cover up the accident." Lydia nodded. "I did." "But I never wanted anyone to die." --- Amina opened the diary. Inside were pages of notes, dates, and names. Then she saw the final entry. Her hands began shaking. "Daniel..." He looked at her. "What is it?" She turned the diary toward him. The final line read: "If anything happens to me, the person responsible is not Richard Kato alone." Below it was another name. A name neither of them expected. Daniel stared. "No..." Amina looked confused. "Who is it?" Daniel's face went pale. "Someone who has been helping us." The room became silent. Because the name written in the diary belonged to someone they trusted. Someone who had stood beside them through everything. Someone who had access to all their secrets. Grace.
