The Letter From Beyond

686 Words
The underground room was silent. Only the sound of paper moving filled the darkness. Daniel held his father's letter with shaking hands. For years, he had searched for answers. For years, he had wondered if his father had left behind mistakes he needed to fix. But now... He was discovering something different. His father had been afraid. Not for himself. For Daniel. --- Amina read the letter again. "Daniel, if you are reading this, then Anthony has returned." "I hoped this day would never come." "Your uncle is not the man people believe him to be." She looked up. "Daniel..." He stared at the words. "Keep reading." She continued. "Anthony believes power is something inherited. He doesn't understand that leadership is earned." "Years ago, he made a choice that hurt our family." "I protected him because he was my brother." "That was my greatest mistake." Daniel stopped breathing for a moment. His father had known. He had known Anthony was dangerous. --- The letter continued. "The factory accident was not the beginning of Anthony's betrayal." "It was the result of years of decisions made in secret." Amina looked at Daniel. "Years?" Daniel nodded slowly. "Anthony was planning this for a long time." Then they reached the final page. Only one sentence was written. "The person who can prove everything is the person I trusted most." Below it was a name. Daniel stared. "No..." Amina saw his expression. "Who?" He turned the letter toward her. The name was clear. Grandma Eleanor Okello. --- They returned to the mansion immediately. Grandma was sitting in the garden, waiting. As if she already knew. Daniel placed the letter on the table. "You knew." Grandma looked at him sadly. "Yes." The answer shocked him. "All these years?" "I was protecting you." Daniel stepped back. "You let me believe my father was gone because of an accident." Grandma's eyes filled with tears. "I lost my son too." "Do you think I wanted to carry that secret?" The anger in Daniel's face softened. "Then tell me the truth." --- Grandma took a deep breath. "Anthony was always jealous." "Your father was loved by everyone." "He built relationships." "He cared about employees." "Anthony thought kindness was weakness." She looked at Daniel. "Your father discovered Anthony was secretly moving company funds." Daniel frowned. "He was stealing?" Grandma nodded. "He was using the money to build his own empire." "Your father confronted him." "And Anthony threatened him." --- Amina sat quietly, listening. She realized something. Both families had been destroyed by the same thing. Greed. Not accidents. Not misunderstandings. Greed. --- "Why didn't you tell the police?" Daniel asked. Grandma looked away. "Because Anthony had already planned everything." "He had evidence manipulated." "Witnesses frightened." "And he threatened someone I loved." "Who?" Grandma looked at Amina. Her expression changed. "What?" "Your father." Amina froze. "My father?" Grandma nodded. "Your father helped mine." "He knew the truth." "And because he knew..." "He became a target." --- Before anyone could say more, the mansion lights suddenly went out. The room became dark. Amina grabbed Daniel's hand. "What happened?" Security alarms started ringing. Grace rushed in. "Sir!" Daniel turned. "What is it?" "The family archive room has been broken into." His face changed. "The letters." They ran toward the room. The wooden chest was still there. But something was missing. The original will. The document Anthony needed. --- Daniel looked around. No broken windows. No forced doors. The thief had entered with permission. Grace checked the security system. Then she stopped. "Sir..." "What?" She looked nervous. "The cameras were disabled using an internal access code." Daniel's eyes narrowed. "Whose code?" Grace hesitated. Then answered: "Mine." The room went silent. Amina looked at Grace. Daniel's expression became unreadable. Another betrayal. Another secret. Another person they trusted. But this time... The evidence was pointing at the person who had stood beside them from the beginning. Grace whispered: "I swear to you..." "I didn't do this." But someone had planned this perfectly. Someone who knew their trust. Someone who knew their weaknesses. Someone who knew exactly how to make them doubt each other.
