The Friend who stayed

The photograph slipped slightly in Daniel's hand. For several seconds, he couldn't move. The person standing beside his father in the old picture wasn't a stranger. It wasn't an enemy from the past. It was someone who had been part of his life for years. Someone who had held his shoulder when Daniel buried his father. Someone who had told him: "Your father would be proud of the man you've become." A person he never thought to question. A person he trusted. --- Amina noticed his silence. "Daniel." He looked at her slowly. "Who is it?" His eyes remained fixed on the photograph. "Edward." Grace frowned. "Edward?" Daniel nodded. "Edward Musoke." The room became quiet. Even Joseph looked uncomfortable. "You know him?" Joseph asked. Daniel looked up. "He was my father's best friend." --- Edward Musoke had been more than an adviser. After Daniel's father died, Edward became the person Daniel turned to for guidance. He helped him understand the company. He taught him how to negotiate. He stood beside him when people doubted his ability to become CEO. For years, Daniel believed Edward was one of the few people who truly cared about him. Now... He wasn't sure. --- "Where is he now?" Amina asked. Daniel answered quietly. "At the company." Grace checked her phone. Then her face changed. "Sir..." "What?" "Edward requested a private meeting with you this morning." Daniel stared. "When?" "Two hours ago." Amina immediately understood. "He knows." --- At Okello Group, Edward waited in the executive lounge. He looked calm. Almost too calm. When Daniel entered, Edward smiled. "There you are." Daniel closed the door behind him. "Why are you here?" Edward's smile faded slightly. "That's not the welcome I expected." "Answer the question." A long silence passed. Then Edward sighed. "You found the photograph." Daniel's eyes hardened. "So you know." "I knew this day would come." "How long have you been lying to me?" Edward looked hurt. "That is not a simple question." "It is." Daniel stepped closer. "Yes or no?" Edward looked away. "Yes." --- The answer hurt more than Daniel expected. Not because he was surprised. But because a part of him had hoped Edward would deny it. "Why?" Edward walked toward the window. "Because your father made a mistake." Daniel's expression changed. "My father?" "He trusted the wrong people." "And you?" Edward turned around. "I was trying to fix what he started." Daniel laughed bitterly. "By helping destroy everything?" "No." Edward's voice became serious. "By protecting you." --- Daniel stared at him. "Protecting me?" "Do you think Anthony was the only threat?" Edward shook his head. "Your father left behind enemies more powerful than Richard." "People who would have destroyed you if you discovered the truth too early." Daniel stepped back. "So you manipulated my entire life?" "I guided you." "You lied to me." Edward had no answer. --- Meanwhile, Amina and Grace searched Edward's history. They found something disturbing. A hidden company connection. A private investment group. A name that appeared repeatedly. The Phoenix Alliance. Grace looked shocked. "I've heard of them." Amina looked at her. "What are they?" "An organization of wealthy investors." "People who influence companies without appearing publicly." "And Edward?" Grace nodded. "He's connected to them." --- Back in Edward's office, Daniel placed the photograph on the table. "Tell me the truth." Edward looked at him. "Your father wasn't killed because of the factory accident." Daniel froze. "What?" "The accident was only a small part of a much bigger plan." "Then who killed him?" Edward became silent. Finally, he said: "Your father discovered who was controlling everything." "Who?" Edward looked directly at him. "The head of the Phoenix Alliance." Daniel waited. But Edward's next words changed everything. "Someone you have met many times." --- At that exact moment, Amina received a message. Unknown number. One sentence. "Ask Daniel why his father kept the biggest secret from him." Attached was a photograph. A photograph of Daniel's father. Standing beside the leader of the Phoenix Alliance. Amina opened the image. Then froze. Because the person beside Daniel's father... Was not Edward. Was not Richard. Was not Anthony. It was someone Daniel trusted even more. Someone who had been protecting him all his life. Amina whispered: "Oh no..." --- When Daniel returned, he saw her expression. "What happened?" She handed him the phone. He looked at the photograph. And the color left his face. Because the person in the picture was the last person he expected. The person who had always called him family. The person who had raised him after his father's death. Grandma Eleanor Okello.
