The Betrayal Within

728 Words
The next few days were strangely peaceful. Too peaceful. Daniel had learned that silence before a storm was often the most dangerous kind. At Okello Group, the investigation into Richard Kato's activities continued. Michael was working with the legal team. Grace was tracking financial records. And Amina was trying to uncover the truth about her father. But someone else was watching. Someone who had access to everything. --- Amina sat in Daniel's office reviewing old company files. "You've been working for five hours," Daniel said from behind her. She looked up. "I need answers." "I know." "Everyone keeps telling me to be careful, but no one understands." Daniel walked closer. "You're trying to protect your father's memory." She nodded. "And I'm trying to protect you." The words surprised her. Daniel rarely admitted when he was worried. Amina smiled softly. "Since when did you become so protective?" He looked at her. "Since a certain woman spilled coffee on my suit." She laughed. "I knew you would never forget that." "Never." --- That afternoon, Grace entered the office. She looked uncomfortable. "Sir." Daniel immediately noticed. "What happened?" "I found something." She placed a file on his desk. Daniel opened it. His expression changed. "What is this?" "Company security records." "Someone accessed restricted files three times this month." Amina frowned. "Who?" Grace hesitated. "We don't know yet." "Why not?" "Because the access was made using an executive-level password." The room became silent. Only a few people had that level of access. Daniel. Grace. And two senior executives. --- That evening, Daniel called a private meeting. The executives arrived, confused. "Is something wrong, sir?" Daniel placed the security report on the table. "We have a leak." The room became tense. Everyone denied involvement. "I have worked for this company for fifteen years." "I would never betray you." Daniel listened quietly. Then his eyes moved toward the corner. Amina noticed. "What is it?" Daniel walked to a small security screen. The footage played. A person entered the archive room late at night. The person's face was hidden. But the clothing was familiar. Grace looked shocked. "No..." Daniel turned to her. "You recognize them?" She didn't answer. "Amina?" Amina stared at the screen. The person was wearing a watch. A watch she had seen many times. The same watch worn by someone who had been helping them. Someone they trusted. --- The next morning, the truth seemed impossible. The person in the video was... Michael. Daniel refused to believe it. "No." Grace looked worried. "Sir, the evidence points to him." "He helped us." "He gave us the missing page." "He saved us." Amina looked at Daniel. "Maybe someone is trying to make it look like him." Daniel nodded. "That's what I believe." But doubt had already entered the room. --- Meanwhile, Michael sat alone in his apartment. A copy of the stolen files lay on his table. His hands trembled. He looked at a message on his phone. Unknown Number: You have until tomorrow. Give us what you took, or the truth about your brother's death will be revealed. Michael closed his eyes. He had spent ten years trying to fix his mistakes. Now he was trapped again. --- At Okello Group, Daniel stood by the window. Amina joined him. "Do you trust Michael?" Daniel was silent. Finally, he answered. "Yes." "Even now?" "Yes." "Why?" He looked at her. "Because I know what it feels like when everyone assumes you're guilty." Amina understood. Daniel wasn't just defending Michael. He was remembering his own past. --- That night, Michael made a decision. He picked up his phone and called Daniel. "I need to tell you something." Daniel answered immediately. "What happened?" Michael's voice was low. "I didn't betray you." "I know." "But someone is forcing me." Daniel's expression changed. "Who?" Michael looked toward his window. "The person who has been behind everything from the beginning." "Richard?" "No." A pause. Then Michael whispered: "Someone much closer." The call suddenly went silent. "Michael?" No answer. The line had been cut. Daniel stood frozen. Amina looked at him. "What happened?" Daniel slowly lowered the phone. "Michael found the real traitor." "And?" His face became serious. "He didn't get a chance to tell me who." Outside the mansion, a shadow moved past the gates. Someone had been listening. And they knew Daniel was getting too close to the truth.
