The Person Behind the Mask

701 Words
The call with Michael replayed in Daniel's mind all night. "Someone much closer." Those three words bothered him more than any threat Richard Kato had ever made. Because Richard was an enemy Daniel understood. But someone close? Someone trusted? That was different. --- The next morning, Daniel arrived at Michael's apartment with Amina, Grace, and security. The door was unlocked. That alone was enough to make Daniel's stomach tighten. "Stay behind me," he told Amina. She frowned. "I'm not helpless." "I know." His voice softened. "That doesn't mean I don't worry." She looked at him for a moment, then nodded. Together, they entered. --- The apartment was quiet. Too quiet. Michael's laptop was open on the table. Several documents were scattered around it. Grace checked the room. "No signs of a struggle." Daniel looked around carefully. "Then where is he?" Amina noticed something on the desk. A small envelope. "Daniel." He walked over. On the front were two words: For Daniel. His hands tightened as he opened it. Inside was a handwritten note. "I found the person who has been helping Richard. I was wrong about many things, but I won't run away again. If something happens to me, check the old company records. The answer is there." Daniel read the final line twice. "Trust the person who stayed when everyone else left." He looked confused. "What does that mean?" --- Back at Okello Group, they searched through old records. Hours passed. Nothing. Until Amina found something. "Wait." Everyone turned. She held an old employee list. "This name." Daniel walked over. Her finger pointed to a former company secretary. Lydia Namukasa. Grace looked surprised. "Lydia?" "You know her?" Amina asked. Grace nodded. "She worked here for almost twenty years." "Where is she now?" Grace looked through the file. "She retired five years ago." Daniel frowned. "Why would Michael point us to her?" --- Before they could investigate further, Daniel received an urgent call. It was the police. "Mr. Okello?" "Yes." "We found Michael." Daniel immediately stood. "Is he okay?" A pause. "He is alive." Relief crossed Daniel's face. "But he was found unconscious near the old factory site." Amina looked at him. "The factory?" Daniel nodded. The past was pulling them back to where everything started. --- At the abandoned factory, police searched through old buildings. Michael was taken to the hospital. Near the back entrance, investigators found something hidden beneath broken equipment. A small metal box. Inside were documents. Old documents. Daniel opened the first page. His eyes widened. "This..." Amina stepped closer. "What is it?" Daniel looked at her. "Proof." "Proof of what?" He held up the papers. "Proof that your father and I were both trying to expose Richard." Amina's eyes filled with tears. "My father was innocent." Daniel nodded. "But there's more." He turned another page. A signature appeared at the bottom. A name they recognized. The person who had approved the factory safety reports. The person who had hidden the truth. The person who had access to all company records. Lydia Namukasa. --- That evening, Lydia sat calmly in her home watching the news. A report showed Daniel reopening the factory investigation. She smiled. "They found the box." Her phone rang. Richard Kato. "Did you handle it?" Lydia looked at the television. "Not yet." "You promised me ten years ago." "I know." Richard's voice became colder. "Then finish what you started." Lydia ended the call. For a moment, guilt crossed her face. Then she opened an old drawer. Inside was a photograph. A younger Lydia. A younger Richard. And a younger Daniel. She touched the picture. "I'm sorry, Daniel." "But some secrets are too expensive to reveal." --- At the hospital, Michael finally woke up. Daniel was waiting beside his bed. "Who attacked you?" Michael struggled to speak. "Lydia..." Daniel froze. "Why?" Michael closed his eyes. "Because she knows the truth." "What truth?" Michael looked at Daniel. "The accident wasn't the only thing she helped hide." Amina stepped closer. "What else?" Michael whispered: "Your father's death." The room went silent. Daniel and Amina looked at each other. Ten years of questions. Ten years of pain. And now... The biggest secret was finally coming to the surface.
