The rain poured over Kampala as a silver SUV pulled into the city.
Behind the wheel sat a man wearing dark sunglasses and a navy jacket. He glanced at the address written on a piece of paper.
Okello Group Headquarters.
He smiled faintly.
"So, Daniel... it's been a long time."
---
At the Okello mansion, Amina was helping Grandma arrange flowers in the garden.
"You have a gentle touch," Grandma said with a smile.
"My mother taught me."
"She raised you well."
Amina smiled.
"She did her best."
Grandma gently patted Amina's hand.
"I've watched Daniel carry the weight of this family for years. He never let anyone get close."
She looked at Amina with kind eyes.
"But with you... he laughs more."
Amina lowered her gaze.
"It's not what you think, Grandma."
"What do I think?"
Before Amina could answer, Daniel stepped into the garden.
"The tea is ready."
Grandma winked at Amina.
"I'll give you two a few minutes."
She walked away, leaving them alone among the blooming roses.
---
Daniel noticed Amina seemed thoughtful.
"What did Grandma tell you?"
"She said you've changed."
He sighed softly.
"Grandmothers notice everything."
"Have you?"
He looked at her for a moment.
"I don't know."
For the first time, neither of them knew what to say.
The silence wasn't uncomfortable anymore.
It was... peaceful.
---
The next morning, Daniel arrived at his office.
Grace rushed toward him.
"Sir, there's a visitor."
"I don't have any appointments."
"He insisted you'd want to see him."
"Who is it?"
Before Grace could answer, a voice came from the doorway.
"You've become difficult to reach."
Daniel froze.
Standing there was a man about his age with a confident smile and a small scar above his left eyebrow.
"It's been ten years," the man said.
"Aren't you going to welcome your old friend?"
Daniel's face turned pale.
"Michael."
Grace looked from one man to the other.
"You know each other?"
Daniel never took his eyes off the visitor.
"Unfortunately."
Michael laughed.
"Still holding a grudge?"
Daniel's voice was cold.
"You should have stayed away."
---
From her office down the hall, Amina noticed the unusual tension.
Employees whispered as Michael walked confidently through the building.
"Who's that?"
"I've never seen Mr. Okello look so angry."
"It must be someone important."
Curiosity got the better of her.
She walked toward Daniel's office.
Just as she reached the door, she heard Michael say,
"So... I hear you're getting married."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"That's none of your business."
Michael smiled.
"I'd love to meet the lucky lady."
At that moment, Amina knocked gently and stepped inside.
"I'm sorry to interrupt..."
Michael turned toward her.
For a second, he said nothing.
Then he smiled.
"So you're Amina."
She frowned.
"Have we met?"
"No."
His smile widened.
"But I've heard a lot about you."
Daniel stepped between them.
"That's enough."
The room fell silent.
Michael looked amused.
"I can see why you're nervous."
Daniel's voice dropped.
"If you involve her in this, we're done talking."
Michael raised his hands.
"Relax. I just came to say hello."
But as he walked out, he leaned close to Amina and whispered,
"Be careful who you trust."
Then he left.
Amina watched him disappear down the corridor.
A chill ran through her.
When she turned back to Daniel, she saw something she'd never seen before.
Fear.
Not for himself...
But for her.
Outside the building, Michael got into his SUV and pulled out his phone.
"The first step is complete," he said into the receiver.
Vanessa's voice came through the speaker.
"Good."
"Did she recognize you?"
"No."
"Excellent."
Vanessa smiled.
"She has no idea that the man who just walked into Daniel's office..."
"...is the same man who destroyed his life ten years ago."
To be continued...
