The celebration lasted long into the night.
Music echoed through the halls of the Imperial Palace as nobles from every realm danced beneath crystal chandeliers.
Laughter filled the grand ballroom, glasses clinked together, and servants moved gracefully through the crowd with trays of exquisite delicacies.
Yet despite the joyous atmosphere...
Lyrielle felt alone.
The silver flame she had witnessed in the cathedral refused to leave her thoughts.
She could still hear the shocked gasps of the guests.
She could still see the fear hidden in the High Priest's eyes.
More importantly...
She remembered the look on Azrael's face.
He had noticed the silver flame before anyone else.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
As though he knew exactly what it meant.
Every time she tried to ask him about it during the banquet, someone interrupted them.
Another noble approached.
Another toast was raised.
Another dance began.
By the time the celebration finally came to an end, the moon had climbed high into the velvet sky.
The newly married couple stood at the entrance of the ballroom.
One by one, the guests bowed before them.
"May your reign be prosperous."
"May the Eternal Flame bless your union."
"Congratulations, Your Highnesses."
Lyrielle forced herself to smile politely.
When the last guest finally departed, she released a long breath.
"I thought they would never leave."
Lucien chuckled.
"Welcome to royal life."
Nyx laughed.
"That was the short version."
"The short version?" Lyrielle asked.
Lucien nodded dramatically.
"Our parents' coronation banquet lasted three days."
Lyrielle's eyes widened.
"Three days?"
"Father nearly banned celebrations forever afterward."
Even Azrael allowed the faintest smile.
The small moment disappeared as quickly as it came.
An elderly maid stepped forward and bowed.
"Your Highnesses."
"Your chambers have been prepared."
Lyrielle frowned.
"My chambers?"
The maid looked confused.
"The Crown Prince's chambers."
Silence.
Only then did Lyrielle understand.
She slowly turned toward Azrael.
"You expect me to sleep in your room?"
Azrael met her gaze calmly.
"We are husband and wife."
"That doesn't answer my question."
"It is customary."
She folded her arms.
"So is marrying strangers, apparently."
Lucien quietly cleared his throat.
"I suddenly remembered..."
"I promised Raven I'd help inspect the eastern towers."
Nyx stared at him.
"At midnight?"
"Yes."
"Very urgent towers."
Without another word, Lucien grabbed Nyx by the wrist.
"Come along."
"I wanted to watch."
"You value your life."
"I value gossip more."
"You can gossip tomorrow."
Nyx laughed as he dragged her down the corridor.
Soon...
Only Lyrielle and Azrael remained.
The silence stretched between them.
"I won't share your room."
Azrael didn't answer immediately.
"May I ask why?"
"You really have to ask?"
"We're strangers."
"You may trust me eventually."
"I don't."
His expression remained unchanged.
"I know."
"Then why insist?"
"Because the palace will expect it."
She scoffed.
"So this is about appearances."
"It's about avoiding unnecessary rumors."
"I couldn't care less what people say."
"I do."
She stared at him.
"You care more about gossip than my feelings?"
"No."
"I care about protecting you."
"Protecting me?"
She laughed bitterly.
"I've spent eighteen years protecting myself."
"I don't need another person deciding what's best for me."
Azrael remained silent.
She stepped closer.
"Do you know what everyone keeps forgetting?"
"They call me your wife."
"They call me Crown Princess."
"They congratulate me."
"But not one person has asked whether this is what I wanted."
Her voice cracked despite her efforts to remain composed.
"I've spent my entire life being told where to stand."
"What to wear."
"How to smile."
"When to speak."
"My father decided my childhood."
"And now everyone expects you to decide my future."
"I won't let that happen."
Azrael looked at her quietly.
When he finally spoke, his voice was softer than before.
"I have no intention of forcing you."
Lyrielle blinked.
"What?"
"If sharing my chambers makes you uncomfortable..."
"Then don't."
She frowned.
"You mean that?"
"Yes."
"I would rather earn your trust than demand your obedience."
His answer caught her completely off guard.
She had expected another argument.
Another command.
Instead...
He stepped aside.
"The room across the corridor has already been prepared."
"You may stay there until you choose otherwise."
She searched his face for deception.
There was none.
Only quiet sincerity.
For a brief moment...
She almost thanked him.
Instead, pride won.
"Good."
Without another word, she turned and walked away.
Azrael watched until her bedroom door closed.
Only then did he release the breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding.
Behind a nearby pillar...
Lucien slowly emerged.
"I told Nyx you'd give in."
Azrael sighed.
"You were listening?"
"You were speaking loudly."
"I wasn't."
"No."
Lucien grinned.
"Your wife was."
For the first time that evening...
Azrael almost smiled.
The morning sun poured through the towering arched windows of Lyrielle's temporary chamber, painting silver patterns across the polished obsidian floor.
For the first time since arriving in the Demon Dominion, she had slept peacefully.
No nightmares.
No voices.
No memories of Asterwyn.
A gentle knock came at the door.
"My Lady?" Luna called softly.
"May I come in?"
"You may."
Luna entered carrying a silver tray laden with breakfast.
"I thought you might prefer to eat somewhere quieter this morning."
Lyrielle smiled faintly.
"Thank you."
Just as she reached for a cup of tea, another knock sounded.
This time it was lighter.
Almost cheerful.
Without waiting for permission, Nyx peeked inside.
"I knew you'd be awake."
Luna laughed.
"You never wait for permission."
"I find doors are merely suggestions."
She walked in carrying a basket filled with fresh moon lilies.
"I brought these for your room."
"They're beautiful."
"They're also impossible to kill."
Nyx placed them beside the window before sitting opposite Lyrielle.
"So..."
"How was your first night as a married woman?"
Lyrielle nearly choked on her tea.
"It was... peaceful."
Nyx raised an eyebrow.
"You stayed in the guest chamber."
"You knew?"
"The entire palace knew."
Lyrielle groaned.
"So much for avoiding gossip."
Nyx smiled sympathetically.
"My brother isn't angry."
"He isn't?"
"He spent half the night telling the servants to prepare another room because he didn't want you to feel uncomfortable."
Lyrielle looked away.
"I suppose..."
"He wasn't as unreasonable as I expected."
Nyx grinned.
"I'll pretend I didn't hear that compliment."
Before Lyrielle could answer, footsteps echoed outside.
A firm knock followed.
"Enter," Nyx called.
The door opened.
Azrael stepped inside.
Unlike yesterday's ceremonial robes, he now wore fitted black travelling armour trimmed with silver. A long sword rested at his hip, and a dark cloak hung from his shoulders.
He looked ready for war.
Nyx frowned.
"So it's true."
Lyrielle looked between them.
"What is?"
Azrael's crimson eyes met hers.
"I've been summoned to the northern border."
"There have been reports of strange disturbances."
"I'll be gone for several days."
Lyrielle blinked once.
Then calmly lifted her teacup.
"I see."
Silence followed.
Nyx looked back and forth between them.
"That's all you have to say?"
Lyrielle shrugged.
"I hardly think his travel plans concern me."
Nyx stared.
"He's your husband."
"Only by law."
Azrael's expression remained unreadable.
"I expected no less."
Nyx sighed dramatically.
"You've been married less than a day and you're already leaving."
Lucien suddenly appeared in the doorway.
"I told him the same thing."
He leaned against the frame with a grin.
"You've officially earned the title of Worst Husband in the Empire."
Azrael looked at him.
"I've been called worse."
Lucien folded his arms.
"You couldn't postpone it?"
"The border cannot."
Nyx crossed her arms.
"And your wife?"
Azrael was quiet for a long moment.
When he finally spoke, he looked only at Lyrielle.
"I will return as quickly as I can."
She didn't answer.
After a brief nod, he turned toward the door.
Just before leaving, he hesitated.
"If you need anything..."
"My family will help you."
Then he disappeared down the corridor.
Lucien watched him go before sighing.
"He worries too much."
Nyx smiled knowingly.
"He always has."
Lyrielle remained silent.
She wasn't sure why...
But watching him leave felt strangely...
Empty.
She quickly pushed the thought away.
"He's practically a stranger."
"Nothing more."
That afternoon, after Nyx had been called away by one of the palace attendants, Lyrielle found herself wandering the palace alone.
Without thinking...
Her feet carried her toward the enormous doors of the Imperial Library.
She pushed them open.
The scent of old parchment and polished wood welcomed her.
The library was breathtaking.
Towering bookshelves stretched so high they disappeared into the shadows above. Rolling ladders glided silently along endless shelves, while floating crystal orbs bathed the room in soft silver light.
Thousands of books rested in perfect order.
Histories.
Magic.
Politics.
Ancient legends.
"So many..."
Lyrielle whispered.
She wandered slowly through the aisles until one section caught her eye.
History of the Eternal Flame.
Her heartbeat quickened.
She carefully removed one ancient leather-bound book.
Dust drifted into the air.
Most of its pages described former emperors and royal ceremonies.
Then...
One page made her stop.
Across faded silver ink were the words-
"When the Eternal Flame abandons darkness and burns with the light of the moon..."
Her breath caught.
It was talking about the wedding.
She continued reading.
"...the Eclipse Heir shall awaken, and the blood of two ancient thrones shall become one..."
The next page had been torn away.
"No..."
She quickly turned another page.
Another section was missing.
Someone had deliberately removed it.
Only a final line remained.
"...Only the one accepted by the Moonheart Tree may complete what was begun a thousand years ago..."
"The Moonheart Tree?"
"What tree is that?"
"Looking for answers already?"
Lyrielle gasped and spun around.
Nyx stood behind her holding three books against her chest.
"You frightened me."
"I noticed."
Nyx glanced at the ancient book.
"Oh..."
"You found the prophecy shelf."
"The prophecy?"
Nyx smiled awkwardly.
"Father says most of those stories are incomplete."
"No one really understands them anymore."
She gently closed the book.
"Come."
"I've been meaning to show you my favourite place in the palace."
Lyrielle looked back at the shelf one last time.
Something told her...
The missing pages were important.
Very important.
But before she could think further, Nyx linked their arms together and happily led her toward the palace gardens...
The moment they stepped through the glass doors, a cool breeze brushed against Lyrielle's face.
Before her stretched the Imperial Gardens.
It was unlike any garden she had ever seen.
Silver-leaved trees swayed gently beneath the afternoon sun, their leaves shimmering like tiny mirrors. Crystal streams wound through beds of black roses and moon lilies, while elegant stone bridges arched over clear ponds where white koi glided silently beneath the water. Butterflies with translucent wings floated lazily among the flowers, leaving faint trails of silver light behind them.
Lyrielle stopped walking.
"It's beautiful..."
Nyx smiled proudly.
"It was my mother's favorite place."
She walked ahead, running her fingers along the petals of a moon lily.
"Whenever Father became too busy with court matters, she'd bring us here."
Lyrielle looked around quietly.
"It doesn't feel like the home of demons."
Nyx laughed.
"That's because humans have spent centuries telling stories about us."
"They only remember our wars."
"They never remember our gardens."
Lyrielle smiled.
"For once..."
"I think the stories were wrong."
Nyx beamed.
"I knew you'd like it."
They continued deeper into the gardens until the neatly trimmed paths disappeared into an older part of the palace grounds.
The flowers became wilder.
The trees taller.
The air...
Heavier.
Lyrielle slowed.
"Where are we?"
Nyx's cheerful expression softened.
"This is the oldest part of the gardens."
"Very few people come here."
"Why?"
Nyx pointed ahead.
Standing alone in the center of an ancient stone courtyard was the largest tree Lyrielle had ever seen.
Its trunk was black like polished obsidian, yet thousands of silver blossoms covered every branch, glowing softly despite the daylight.
The ground beneath it shimmered with fallen petals.
"The Moonheart Tree," Nyx whispered.
"It has stood here since before the Demon Empire existed."
"They say it remembers every Emperor... every Queen..."
"And every soul chosen by fate."
Lyrielle couldn't look away.
Something about the tree...
Felt familiar.
As if she had seen it before.
Not with her eyes...
But in a dream.
Without realizing it, she took a step forward.
Then another.
"Lyrielle?"
Nyx called.
But Lyrielle barely heard her.
Her heartbeat echoed inside her chest.
The closer she came, the louder it became.
Until...
She reached the tree.
The moment her fingertips brushed the rough bark-
A pulse of silver light raced through the trunk.
The entire garden fell silent.
No birds.
No wind.
Nothing.
Nyx's eyes widened.
"...No."
The silver blossoms began to tremble.
One after another...
They floated from the branches.
Not downward.
Toward Lyrielle.
Thousands of glowing petals circled around her like a living storm.
The wind rose without warning.
Lyrielle gasped.
"What... what's happening?"
The ground beneath her feet began to glow with ancient runes.
Soft silver light climbed from the earth and wrapped gently around her arms.
She tried to step back.
She couldn't move.
The tree was responding to her.
"No one has ever..."
Nyx whispered in disbelief.
"...made the Moonheart Tree awaken."
The silver petals suddenly rushed toward Lyrielle.
Instinctively...
She closed her eyes.
A brilliant burst of silver light exploded from her body.
The light swept across the gardens like a wave.
Every flower bloomed at once.
Dead vines burst into life.
Crystal streams sparkled brighter than ever before.
Even the air itself seemed filled with magic.
Then...
Just as suddenly...
Everything stopped.
The light disappeared.
The petals drifted gently back to the ground.
Lyrielle stumbled backward.
"I..."
Her breathing was uneven.
"What did I do?"
Nyx slowly approached her.
"I don't know..."
Before either of them could say another word-
CRACK!
A loud snap echoed overhead.
Both women looked up.
One of the Moonheart Tree's oldest branches had broken loose.
It was enormous.
Far too heavy to escape in time.
"Lyrielle!"
Nyx screamed.
Lyrielle tried to run.
Her foot caught on one of the glowing roots.
She lost her balance.
The branch crashed toward her.
At the last second she twisted away, but the rough wood scraped violently across her left arm before smashing into the stone path beside her.
She cried out in pain.
Blood immediately soaked through the delicate sleeve of her dress.
Nyx dropped to her knees beside her.
"You're hurt!"
"It..."
Lyrielle winced.
"It isn't too bad..."
But as Nyx pulled back the torn fabric, her expression changed.
The cut stretched from Lyrielle's wrist almost to her elbow.
It wasn't deep...
But it bled freely.
Nyx quickly pressed her hand against the wound.
"We have to get Luna."
"It's alright..."
"No, it isn't."
Then...
Something impossible happened.
Tiny strands of silver light appeared beneath Nyx's fingers.
They weren't coming from Nyx.
They were coming from Lyrielle.
The silver light wrapped itself around the wound.
The bleeding slowed.
The torn skin slowly began knitting itself together.
Not completely.
Just enough to stop the blood.
Both girls stared in stunned silence.
"I..."
Lyrielle whispered.
"I didn't cast a spell."
"You didn't."
Nyx breathed.
"The magic acted on its own."
Before either of them could understand what had happened, hurried footsteps echoed through the gardens.
Raven emerged first, followed by six Imperial Guards.
His sharp grey eyes immediately fell upon the shattered branch...
Then the glowing roots...
Then Lyrielle's injured arm.
His expression hardened.
"What happened here?"
Neither princess answered.
Because neither of them truly knew.
High above them...
The last silver blossom drifted gently from the Moonheart Tree.
As it touched the ground...
It dissolved into light.
Far beneath the Imperial Palace, hidden within forgotten catacombs sealed for over a thousand years, an ancient crystal embedded in a stone altar suddenly glowed silver.
Cracks spread across its surface.
Somewhere in the darkness...
A hooded figure slowly opened crimson eyes.
A cold smile spread across his face.
"So..."
"The Moonheart Tree has chosen."
"The Eclipse Heir has begun to awaken."
He turned toward the shadows where unseen creatures stirred.
"Prepare yourselves."
"The hunt... begins."
