Alex woke with a scream trapped in his throat.
His eyes snapped open. The ceiling was unfamiliar. Gray concrete. Flickering fluorescent lights. The smell of antiseptic and old blood.
He was in the medical bay of Sebastian's safe house. Strapped to a bed. Wires and monitors attached to his chest, his arms, his temples.
The last thing he remembered was the video. Vance's face. His voice. The confession that had shattered everything Alex thought he knew.
Then nothing. Blackness. Silence.
"You're awake."
Aurora's voice came from somewhere to his left. She was sitting at a desk, her eyes red-rimmed and exhausted. A half-empty coffee cup sat beside her.
"What happened?" Alex's voice was hoarse. Raw. "Why am I strapped down?"
"You had a seizure. A bad one. Your body was rejecting the last of the inhibitors. It was... violent." She paused. "You nearly killed Sebastian."
Alex looked down at his hands. They were clean now. Bandaged. But he remembered the feeling. The power surging through him. The desperate need to destroy everything around him.
"What did I do?"
"Nothing permanent. Sebastian's tougher than he looks. But you need to understand, Alexander. Your Alpha nature is fully awakened now. The inhibitors are gone. You're stronger, faster, more dangerous than you've ever been."
She leaned forward. "But you're also more unstable. The power is raw. Untamed. It will take time and training to control it."
"Time we don't have," Alex said. "The Aegis Initiative is hunting me. The Vance Corporation wants to use me. I don't have the luxury of training."
"You don't have the luxury of ignoring it either." Aurora moved to his bedside. "If you can't control your power, you'll destroy yourself. And everyone around you."
Alex looked at her. At the fear behind her eyes. The guilt she was still hiding.
"Then help me," he said. "Teach me. Show me how to control this thing inside me."
Aurora nodded slowly. "I can try. But it won't be easy. The Alpha power is tied to your emotions. Your anger. Your fear. Your desire for revenge. You'll need to master those before you can master the power."
"Then I'll master them."
She released the restraints. Alex sat up slowly, testing his body. He felt different. Stronger. More alive than he'd ever felt before.
But there was also a darkness inside him. A hunger that he couldn't quite control.
He pushed it down and stood.
"Where's Sebastian?"
"Command center. He's been tracking the Aegis Initiative's movements. They're mobilizing a full-scale operation against us."
"Against me."
Aurora didn't argue. "Against all of us. They know you're an Alpha now. They know you're a threat. They won't stop until you're dead."
Alex walked to the door. "Then I need to be ready."
The command center was a hive of activity. Screens lined the walls, displaying satellite imagery, surveillance feeds, tactical maps. Sebastian stood at the center, barking orders at a team of operatives Alex hadn't met before.
He recognized one of them. A massive man with a shaved head and arms like tree trunks. He was carrying a heavy weapons case and looked like he could bench press a car.
"Alex." Sebastian turned as he entered. "Good. You're awake. We have a situation."
"What kind of situation?"
Sebastian gestured to the main screen. It showed a satellite image of a facility on the outskirts of the city. Industrial. Isolated. Surrounded by high walls and armed guards.
"That's a Vance Corporation research lab. We've tracked a significant amount of activity there over the past 48 hours. We believe they're holding someone important."
"Who?"
Sebastian's expression was grim. "Another Alpha. A young man, barely seventeen. He was captured three days ago. The Vance Corporation has been running experiments on him. Testing his limits. Pushing his power to the breaking point."
Alex felt the anger surge inside him. Hot. Primal. The darkness he'd been suppressing flared to life.
"They're torturing a child?"
"Worse. They're trying to weaponize him. Turn him into a living weapon they can control. And if they succeed, he won't be the last."
Alex turned to the screen. The facility was heavily guarded. Multiple layers of security. Armed patrols. The kind of fortress that would take an army to breach.
"How many operatives do we have?" he asked.
"Four. Including you and me."
"Four against an army?"
Sebastian smiled. "You're not just a soldier anymore, Alexander. You're an Alpha. And I've been doing this for a very long time. Trust me. We can do this."
Alex looked at the massive operative. "Who are you?"
The man grinned. "Jaxon. Heavy weapons and demolitions. I make things go boom."
Alex nodded slowly. "And the others?"
Sebastian gestured to two more operatives. A lean, dark-skinned man with a sniper rifle slung across his back. And a woman with sharp features and eyes that missed nothing.
"Marcus," Sebastian said, pointing to the sniper. "Our intelligence officer. He's the one who found the facility."
"And the woman?"
"Aria. Our best shot. She's the one who'll be watching your back."
Aria met Alex's eyes. There was no fear in them. No hesitation. Just cold, professional assessment.
"Nice to meet you," she said. "Try not to die before we get inside."
Alex felt a flicker of approval. These were professionals. People who knew what they were doing. People he could trust.
He hoped.
"We move in at dawn," Sebastian said. "The facility shifts security rotations every 12 hours. We've identified a window of opportunity. A gap in the patrols that will allow us to infiltrate the facility undetected."
"And the Alpha? The prisoner?"
"We get him out. That's the primary objective. Everything else is secondary."
Alex looked at the screen. At the facility that held a young man who was just like him. An Alpha. A prisoner. A weapon in the making.
He felt the darkness surge again. The hunger. The rage.
"No," he said. "The primary objective is to burn that place to the ground. Make sure they can never do this to anyone else."
Sebastian looked at him. "That's not the mission."
"It is now."
For a moment, no one spoke. Then Sebastian nodded slowly.
"Fine. We hit them hard. But we get the prisoner out first. That's non-negotiable."
Alex agreed. He wasn't ready to sacrifice an innocent for revenge. Not yet.
But the darkness was growing. And he knew it wouldn't be long before he had to make a choice.
The mission was set. The plan was made.
Now all they had to do was survive.
The safe house was quiet as Alex prepared for the assault. He'd been given new gear. Body armor. Weapons. A comms unit that would keep him in contact with the team.
But none of it felt as important as the power inside him. The power that was singing in his veins, demanding to be used.
He found Aurora in the medical bay. She was staring at a screen, her face pale and drawn.
"What is it?" he asked.
She looked up. "I've been analyzing the data from your seizure. The power surge. It was... significant. More than I expected."
"How significant?"
"Your Alpha strength is off the charts. Higher than any recorded Alpha in history. You're not just an Alpha, Alexander. You're something more. Something the Vance Corporation has been searching for."
Alex felt a chill run down his spine. "Searching for what?"
"The first Alpha. The original. The one who started it all." She pulled up a file on the screen. "According to the research, there was a man. A legend. He was the first to discover the Alpha power. The first to learn how to control it. And the first to pass it on to his descendants."
She turned to face him. "They called him the Primus. The first Alpha. And according to Vance's data, you're his direct descendant. His heir. The one who carries his power in your blood."
Alex stared at her. "You're saying I'm related to some ancient legend?"
"I'm saying you're the most powerful Alpha in existence. And that's why the Aegis Initiative wants you dead. And why the Vance Corporation wants you alive."
She moved closer. "The Primus built an empire. An empire that spanned continents. He ruled the world from the shadows for centuries. And then he disappeared. No one knows what happened to him. But his bloodline continued. Hidden. Secret. Waiting."
"And I'm the last of that bloodline?"
"Yes. The very last. If you die, the Primus's line dies with you. The Vance Corporation wants to harvest that power. Study it. Replicate it. Create an army of Alphas they can control."
Alex felt the weight of her words. The burden of his heritage. He was the heir to an ancient empire. The last of a legendary bloodline.
And everyone wanted a piece of him.
"We get the prisoner first," he said. "Then we deal with the Vance Corporation. One step at a time."
Aurora nodded. "One step at a time."
But her eyes held something else. Something Alex couldn't quite read.
Fear. Or maybe guilt.
He pushed it aside. He had a mission to focus on. A prisoner to rescue. A facility to destroy.
The darkness could wait.
Dawn came quickly. The team moved out in a black SUV, heading for the Vance Corporation facility.
Jaxon was in the driver's seat, humming a tune that Alex didn't recognize. Marcus was in the passenger seat, his eyes glued to a tablet that displayed the facility's security schematics.
Aria was in the back, checking her rifle with practiced efficiency.
And Sebastian was in the seat next to Alex, his expression calm and focused.
"Remember the plan," he said. "We breach the perimeter at the north wall. Aria provides overwatch. Marcus covers our exit. Jaxon handles the demolition."
"And me?"
Sebastian looked at him. "You're the distraction. The Alpha. When they see you, they'll panic. They'll focus everything on you."
"And the prisoner?"
"Jaxon will grab him. You'll buy him the time to get out."
Alex nodded. It was a simple plan. Dangerous. But simple.
They reached the facility at first light. The walls were high, topped with razor wire. Guards patrolled the perimeter, their movements mechanical and predictable.
Aria found her position. Marcus disappeared into the shadows. Jaxon moved toward the north wall, his demolition charges ready.
And Alex waited.
He felt the power building inside him. The darkness. The hunger. It wanted to be free. Wanted to destroy everything in its path.
He held it back. Just barely.
"Ready," Sebastian whispered in his ear. "Go."
Alex moved. Faster than humanly possible. He was over the wall before the guards could react, his fists finding their targets with brutal precision.
The first guard fell. Then the second. Then a third.
The alarm began to blare. Floodlights snapped on. Armed men poured out of the facility, their weapons raised.
Alex smiled. It was a cold smile. The smile of a predator.
He let the darkness loose.
The fight was chaos. Pure, glorious chaos. Alex moved through the guards like a storm, his power singing in his veins. He was faster. Stronger. More deadly than any of them.
But there were too many. Dozens. Scores. They kept coming, their weapons blazing, their bodies falling.
He was bleeding. He could feel it. But the power kept him going, kept him fighting, kept him alive.
"Jaxon!" Sebastian's voice crackled in his ear. "We've got the prisoner! Time to go!"
Alex heard the explosion. Felt the ground shake beneath his feet. Jaxon had done his job. The facility was going down.
Now it was time to survive.
He turned to run, but something stopped him. A presence. A darkness that mirrored his own.
A man stood in the doorway. Tall. Powerful. His eyes blazing with the same Alpha fire that burned inside Alex.
He was an Alpha too. But not like any Alpha Alex had seen before. This one was different. Older. More powerful.
"So," the man said, his voice cold and amused. "You're the one they've been looking for. The heir. The last of the Primus's line."
Alex felt the darkness surge. The hunger. The rage.
"Who are you?" he demanded.
The man smiled. "My name is Silas Vance. And I've been waiting for you, Alexander Knight. You see, I'm the one who's been pulling the strings. The one who set up the ambush. The one who killed your men."
He stepped closer. "And now you're going to join me. Or you're going to die."
Alex felt the weight of his words. The betrayal. The manipulation. Everything that had happened, every death, every moment of pain and suffering—it had all been orchestrated by this man.
"I'll see you in hell," Alex said.
Silas smiled. "I don't think so. You see, I have something you want. Something you need. The truth about your heritage. The truth about what you really are."
He pulled a device from his pocket. A small, metallic object that hummed with power.
"Your bloodline is the key to everything, Alexander. The key to controlling the Alphas. The key to ruling the world. And with your blood, I can unlock it all."
Alex felt the darkness surge. The power. The hunger.
He lunged forward. But Silas was faster. The device activated, and a wave of energy hit Alex like a physical blow.
He crumpled to the ground, his body convulsing. The power inside him was being suppressed. Controlled. Neutralized.
"Don't fight it," Silas said. "The more you fight, the stronger the field becomes. Just accept your fate. Accept that you belong to me now."
Alex tried to rise. Tried to summon the power. But the device was too strong. Too advanced.
He was helpless.
"Jaxon!" Sebastian's voice again. "We're leaving! Now!"
The explosion was closer this time. Louder. Jaxon had collapsed the main building. The facility was crumbling around them.
Silas looked up, his expression annoyed. "It seems we'll have to continue this another time."
He turned and disappeared into the smoke.
Alex lay on the ground, his body broken and weak. The device had done its work. The power inside him was gone. Suppressed. Controlled.
He felt something grab him. A strong hand, pulling him to his feet.
Jaxon. The massive operative was half-carrying him toward the exit.
"Time to go, Alpha," he said. "We've got the prisoner. Now we need to get you out of here."
Alex nodded weakly. He couldn't speak. Could barely think.
The power was gone. The darkness was gone.
He was just a man again. Weak. Helpless. Alone.
The team reached the extraction point. Aria was there, her face grim. Marcus was covering their retreat. Sebastian was waiting in the SUV, the prisoner safe inside.
They piled in and drove away as the facility collapsed behind them.
Alex lay in the back of the vehicle, staring at the ceiling.
The power was gone. His Alpha nature was gone. He was nothing again.
But Silas was still out there. Still hunting him.
And this time, Alex didn't have the strength to fight back.
The drive back to the safe house was silent.
No one spoke. No one looked at him.
He was a failure. A broken weapon. A tool that had been used and discarded.
But somewhere in the darkness, Alex felt a spark. A tiny ember of hope.
The power was still there. Suppressed, but not gone. It was just waiting for the right moment to return.
And when it did, Alex would be ready.
He closed his eyes and let the darkness take him.
The next time he woke up, everything would be different.
