Lyra had always believed fear made noise.
She was wrong.
Real fear was silent.
It settled in her chest as she stared at the silver glow seeping through the cloth wrapped around her wrist. The mark had never burned this intensely before.
She hurried through the forest, her basket forgotten beneath an old oak tree. Every instinct told her to get home before nightfall, yet the deeper she walked, the more unfamiliar the woods became.
"This isn't right..."
She had taken these paths countless times. She knew every stream, every twisted pine, every moss-covered boulder.
Yet today...
Nothing looked the same.
A thick mist rolled between the trees, swallowing the sunlight. The forest was leading her somewhere.
Or someone.
A low growl echoed behind her.
Lyra spun around.
Nothing.
Only mist.
She took another step.
The growl came again.
Closer.
Then another answered from her left.
And another from her right.
They were surrounding her.
Her heart pounded as four enormous wolves emerged from the fog. Unlike the peaceful wolves she'd seen that morning, these were scarred, lean, and hungry. Their amber eyes glowed with menace.
They weren't ordinary wolves.
They were rogues.
Every child in the village had heard stories about rogue wolves—werewolves who had abandoned their packs and surrendered to bloodlust. Most people believed they were myths.
Lyra now wished they were.
The largest rogue bared its teeth.
Drool dripped onto the forest floor.
It lunged.
Lyra threw herself sideways just as powerful jaws snapped shut where she'd been standing.
She scrambled to her feet and ran.
Branches clawed at her face.
Roots reached for her ankles.
Behind her came the thunder of paws crashing through the undergrowth.
Faster.
Closer.
One rogue leaped.
Its claws caught the back of her cloak, tearing the fabric and throwing her to the ground.
Pain shot through her shoulder.
She rolled just in time to avoid another bite.
The hunting knife slipped from her hand and disappeared into the leaves.
No weapon.
No escape.
The lead rogue advanced slowly, almost enjoying her terror.
"So..."
A rough male voice echoed inside her mind.
"The scent is real."
Lyra froze.
The wolf had spoken.
Not aloud.
Inside her head.
"What... what are you?" she whispered.
The rogue's lips curled into something almost like a smile.
"The one who finally found you."
He raised his head and inhaled deeply.
"The forgotten bloodline still lives."
The words made no sense.
Before Lyra could respond, the burning in her wrist exploded.
She screamed.
The cloth wrapped around her wrist tore apart as brilliant silver light burst from the ancient mark.
The entire forest shook.
The rogues stumbled backward, whining in pain.
One dropped to its belly.
Another fled without looking back.
The leader stared at the glowing symbol, horror replacing triumph.
"It can't be..."
He took a step backward.
"No..."
Another.
"You're supposed to be dead."
Without another word, the rogues vanished into the mist.
The forest fell silent once more.
Lyra collapsed to her knees, clutching her wrist as the light slowly faded.
Tears blurred her vision.
"What am I?"
---
Hundreds of miles away...
The Silver Moon Palace was alive with celebration.
Delegations from all seven kingdoms had arrived for the Moon Ascension Ceremony.
Courtyards buzzed with warriors, nobles, and servants preparing for the most important gathering in fifty years.
Kael stood alone on a stone balcony overlooking the city.
The wind carried dozens of scents.
Fresh rain.
Pine.
Smoke from cooking fires.
Excitement.
Fear.
And then...
Something else.
A scent unlike anything he had ever known.
Wild jasmine.
Rain-soaked earth.
Moonlight.
His wolf surged violently inside him.
Mine.
Kael staggered back.
Impossible.
The scent disappeared as quickly as it had come.
He closed his eyes.
His wolf paced restlessly.
Find her.
Kael frowned.
The ceremony hadn't even begun.
No Alpha was supposed to sense a mate before standing beneath the Moon Altar.
Yet his wolf refused to calm.
Find her.
Now.
A sharp knock interrupted his thoughts.
Princess Selene stepped onto the balcony.
"You look like you've seen a ghost."
Kael looked toward the distant mountains.
"I smelled someone."
Selene raised an eyebrow.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"But my wolf does."
---
Deep beneath Blackstone Peak...
Darkness stirred.
The silver chains binding the Hollow King pulsed with ancient light.
A thin c***k spread across one of them.
The Hollow King's eyes opened.
After a thousand years...
He smiled.
"I found you."
His voice echoed through the endless prison.
"The child of silence."
Far away, Lyra looked down at the silver mark now etched more clearly into her skin than ever before.
For the first time...
It had changed.
A second line had appeared beside the ancient symbol.
It pointed north.
Toward the Silver Moon Kingdom.
Toward Kael Draven.
Neither of them knew it yet.
But fate had already taken its first irreversible step.
