Chapter Eight - Kane & Athena.

Jade was asleep in my arms, she must of been dreaming because she was smiling.

From the moment I met this sassy beautiful woman she was mine, I knew for certain when she was able to speak to Athena that she was made just for me, my other half.

The first night in the kitchen I tried to deny the pull I felt towards her, she is a human and not made for my world and the dangers it brings. The connection between us was undeniable and impossible to ignore. Now I've gone and done the one thing I swore to myself I'd never do, in the shower I bonded her to me for eternity.

Stroking back her long black her of her face I could clearly see my mark on her neck, it was my mark claiming her for all to see as my one and only soul mate.

When she wakes she will see it, I should of spoke to her first and got her permission but in that moment I couldn't control the magic deep inside of myself and it came forward to lay claim to Jade.

I have to leave her later today, I will need to travel to investigate what the danger after her is.

Athena will stay here with Jade and keep her safe, I need to strengthen my wards around my home and make sure nothing is able to get in.

Knowing I will be unable to sleep tonight, I gently extracted myself from under Jade and pulled a blanket over her.

I went downstairs and into my room where I kept all the ancient grimoires and books that I had collected over the years, sighing I pulled out one of the oldest ones and began to read the text that was in a language only I could understand.

A few hours before dawn the door creaked open and Athena walked in and sat by my side "You are leaving soon?" she stared at me intently "Yes I must track down whatever this evil darkness is that's hunting Jade, will you keep her safe while I am gone?" Athena huffed "You should know not to ask me that, I will protect her with my life."

"I have claimed Jade as mine and bonded us together." I poured myself a glass of whisky, swirling the amber liquid in the glass deep in thought about the journey ahead of me.

Jade accepted you fast" Athena wasn't surprised because usually when one meets their soul mate they complete the bond immediately, however with Jade being a human she thought it would take longer. She stared intently at Kane who was still staring at his glass and growled "You did ask her didn't you?"

Kane sighed and downed his whisky "It wasn't as simple as that, the magic in me called to her and I couldn't stop it from claiming her fully."

"You better hope she feels the same way about you or she will never forgive you for taking her choice away. Where will you go first when you leave?" Laying her head on her paws Athena waited for Kane to get his thoughts together.

"To the Vampire Kingdom, they will know more about the darkness I have seen in my visions."

"You trust those bloodsuckers?" Athena scoffed, she hated Vamps they were like ticks feeding off blood and they smelled of death and decay bleh!

Kane laughed without humour "I trust no one apart from you Athena" he poured another whisky "I will strengthen the wards around our perimeter, the delivery of food and supplies comes once a week it is all paid for so there will be enough here until I return." Kane rose from his chair and started to gather what he would need in a small satchel, he could magic up food and clothes so he wouldn't need that. Just a few ingredients for his spells and some crystals that he took everywhere with him.

"I thought you weren't leaving until later?" Athena eyed him suspiciously and stood up.

"I have to leave now, its better we have some time apart for Jade to have a chance to think about what she wants, I have left her a letter please make sure she gets it. If I'm not back in a month you know something has gone wrong." Kane knelt down to cuddle Athena before whispering words and vanishing.

Athena huffed. Jade was not going to be haply to wake up and find he had gone without telling her, now to think of ways to keep a human busy for a month so that she didn't try wandering off.....she groaned and decided it was too early for all these worries so she trotted back upstairs and decided to sleep in Kane's bed by Jades feet.

A few hours later Athena woke to her fur being stroked "I still think she uses a secret conditioner" Jade whispered to herself, Athena chuckled to herself and stretched.

"Any chance a girl could get a nice juicy steak for breakfast?" she asked Jade wagging her tail to make sure Jade said yes.

"I think that could be arranged and how would madam like her steak cooked?" Jade asked giggling, "Raw of course, I'm a wild animal" Athena answered in a snooty voice, she liked Jade and was looking forward to getting to know here better now that Kane wasn't around to keep distracting her with his stupid body.

"I will have a quick shower first and then be down to do us all breakfast if Kane hasn't already done it."

Ok Athena time to get out of here if she finds out he's gone before breakfast you might not get that steak and then you will be stuck to hunting and might only find a rabbit. Athena whined thinking about the juicy steak that she had a high chance of missing out on and quickly left the room and ran downstairs to sit patiently in the kitchen waiting for her breakfast.

A few minutes later there was a scream followed by a door crashing and footsteps thundering down the stairs, Athena rolled her eyes thinking about all the ways she could kill Kane for leaving her to deal with this.

"Kane!" Jade screeched like a banshee and came stomping into the room with her hands firmly planted on her hips she eyed me and I eyed her "Where is he and what the hell has happened to my neck?"

Just stay calm Athena, yes her screeching is hurting your ears, count to five. One, Two....... "Athena!" woah did she just stamp her foot, little brat!

Sighing I began "Kane has had to go away for a short time....." I couldn't get another word out before she interrupted "Away? Away where, how long for and why do I have a bloody tattoo on my neck?" Screeched the brat whilst stamping tapping her foot.

Ok enough of this behaviour "Lower your voice when talking to me, quit acting like a brat and I will explain everything. Calm down make yourself a coffee and maybe get my steak hmmmm, then we can talk like grown ups."

Jade raised an eyebrow at me and then did what I said quietly, wow that went better than I expected.

I gobbled my steak while Jade drank her coffee never taking her eyes off me, licking my lips when I finished I sat down at a safe distance from her.

"Where to start, where to start?" I hummed.

"How about telling me when Kane will be back and what this tattoo is?" her foot was tapping and she was trying to control her temper. I decided ripping the band aid off would make more sense than beating around the bush so taking a deep breath I quickly said "Kane has claimed you as his soul mate now you're bonded together eternity and he won't be back for a month!"

I watched with fascination as her face got redder and then she shrieked "He did what?"
