Helens POV.
He stood very still as I spoke, he hadn't said
anything in response to what I had said, he just stared at me surprised at my poise, he looked like he was surprised at how I had reacted to the issue, I hadn't made much of a fuss while I spoke to him and while I remain quite vexed with his decision to keep these details whatever they were from me, I had chosen not to speak out of turn and to let him do most of the talking, I would find out whether he was lying or not just by observing him closely. I remained doubtful of the fact that Henry would be able to hide any details from me as we spoke, I was very keen for him to give me any telltale signs of deception.
I knew very well how to pick out the details in his face and his composure, I'd had enough time to learn, and with Michael as a template, he had taught me more than enough lessons from which I hadn't recovered as much as I'd like at this point, there wasn't anyone who would be able to tell better than me at this point if he had any falsehood in his words and his disposition.
"Could I come in at least?", He asked as he stretched his arm towards the open door behind me. I hesitated at first, staring at him with cold eyes refusing to move aside to let him into my apartment.
"Come on Helen, we really can't do this standing outside here, let's go inside at least", he insisted. My resolve had softened as he spoke. In my defence, I still felt some type of way about letting him enter my space, he still had that scent about him that hardened my n*****s and the last thing I wanted right now was to have him turn me on given how angry I was, so when I stood aside for him to enter my apartment, I did so very reluctantly.
He walked by me and into the apartment, I could tell that he was staring at me but I didn't turn toward him to return his look, I kept my eyes fixed on the space he had just vacated till he walked by me and into the apartment. I allowed myself to have a breath to get my mind right as I turned to follow him into the room, this didn't feel right by any means but I was taking Marie's advice, I honestly hoped it would be for the best and that I wouldn't regret it.
I entered the apartment after him and shut the door, I immediately turned around with my hands akimbo, letting him into the apartment was the limit of my compromise, he needed to begin to speak. He looked at me half-expecting me to take a seat or relax my poise and when he didn't see the possibility of any of that happening, he began to speak.
"Ask me anything, I'll tell you the truth Helen, anything you're confused about", his rich deep voice came, my poise was almost shattered by it but I remained strong, I needed to.
"The truth? Henry? Why would I believe a thing you say after all the details you have kept from me? It's suddenly convenient for you to tell me the truth?", I shrieked at him, I was previously of the opinion that I knew everything there was to know about him, I was comfortable because I had developed the notion that he had nothing to hide. The trust and the confidence I had built in him was suddenly gone and he could see that in my eyes as I glared at him.
He wanted to speak but he lacked the words, it appeared he had given up on trying to convince me. There was a moment of tense silence between us as he tried to figure out what to say to me.
"The man you saw earlier today was my brother, my twin brother. My mother sent him to bring me home. I know you have absolutely no reason to trust me at this point and you don't have to, all I ask is if you cannot trust anything I say, come with me to see for yourself.", he suggested as he looked at me with pleading eyes.
"You have some nerve thinking I'd be willing to travel with you", I retorted. He was bold, I'd give him that.
"God damn it, Helen, I have been pleading with you to at least hear me out for hours now, you said you can no longer trust me and I have made an attempt to find a solution to that, what would you have me do?", he asked, raising his voice as he did.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have raised my voice at you, I'm sorry Helen", he apologised as he noticed that I had taken a step back from where he has standing, he let his hands fall to his sides as he let out a frustrated breath.
I watched him closely for a minute or two before storming off to the bedroom and leaving him standing there, I locked the door behind me and took a quick shower, powdered my face up and struggled to quickly get into a black gown suitable enough for the intentions I had. When I was done, I opened the door and walked out as he stared at me, stupefied with his mouth agape.
"Let's go", I said coldly, I would give him all the chances he needed to make this right and if he failed, it would be on him and not me, my conscience would be cleared of any wrongdoing.
He got off the sofa as quickly as he could and followed me towards the door, hurrying ahead of me to open it and hold it open as I walked through. He removed the keys and locked the door behind us, placing them atop the door frame as he had seen me do before we took the stairs down. It had begun to drizzle and by the time we had gotten into the car and drove off, it had started raining, the roads were still quite clear so Henry didn't pay much attention to minding his speed, I guess he was eager to prove to me that he had nothing sinister to hide, I hoped for his sake that this was true because this would prove to be the sole determinant of the future of this relationship.
We had driven for a while before he found the courage to speak.
"Say something Helen, at least talk to me", he said, turning to stare at me repeatedly as he drove, the urge to converse with him was there but I wasn't going to throw him a bone and compromise my stand for his benefit.
"What do you want me to say, Henry? You lied to me", I responded coldly as I stared out through the windscreen and focused on the road ahead. I felt him recoil in disappointment.
"I was still trying to decide how to tell you, Helen, it was never my intention to....."
"Watch out Henry......", I screamed. Those were the last words I remembered.
In his eagerness to speak to me, Henry had failed to notice the deer that was walking leisurely across the road and as he veered to the right to avoid it, the vehicle skidded off the road and into the woods.
It all went black and quiet, too quiet.
In the darkness I could hear a dripping sound, I had no sense of where the sound was coming from, I felt like I was floating in the liquid darkness with no sense of direction or control over how it carried me, I was merely conscious of the fact that I was being carried.
Suddenly, there was a little dot of bright light. It got bigger and bigger, moving towards me until it engulfed me.
I opened my eyes, squinting continuously at how bright the light in the room was. It took a considerable amount of time for my eyes to adjust to the light in the room and as if did, I could see two men standing in the room, one of them kept staring at me with anger in his eyes while the other was trying to get him to leave. I tried to lift my arms but a sharp pain stopped me, it appeared a needle was stuck in my arm and a line had been fed from a drip bag hanging a little distance from my bed.
The angry man looked vaguely familiar but I didn't think I had met him before.
"Who are you", I asked. The man standing at the foot of my bed looked very unconvinced that I had no idea who he was.
"Drop the act Helen, your weakness has put my brother in a coma while you remain here alive and well", he yelled. The doctor had opened the door to call for assistance and in a short while, some uniformed men had arrived and had grabbed hold of the raving man, removing him from the room as he continued yelling threats.
"You don't remember him?", The doctor asked as soon as all was quiet. I had already begun to shed tears, I didn't know these people.
