The Offer

Ping. Her phone vibrated. One new email. Her heart jumped. She hesitated, hopeful, but cautious. It might be a rejection. Or a congratulations. Or worse, one of those automated “we’ll get back to you” lies. But the subject line read: “INTERVIEW OUTCOME – GRAVITAS CORP” Tania blinked. Her chest tightened. She opened it. Dear Miss Tania Walter, Following your standout performance in the final interview, we are pleased to offer you a specialized position at Gravitas Corporation. Kindly report to our headquarters on Monday at 9:00 a.m. for onboarding. Role details will be provided upon arrival, per executive directive. Her scream startled even herself. She leapt off the bed, spun in circles, and hugged her pillow like it was Emma. “Yes! Yes!! Yes!!!” She dropped to her knees and clasped her hands together. “Jesus… I’m sorry I said all those things earlier. Please, show me mercy. Thank You.” She grabbed her phone and dialed. “Guess who just got hired, baby?!” “Girllll!” “Gravitas freakin’ Corp just offered me the job!!!” “Aaaargh! Girl, speak it!!” “I’m so happy. Thank God. I start Monday!” The weekend passed in a blur, part excitement, part unease. Monday came fast. Tania barely slept. Her mind looped endlessly: What had they hired her for? She’d applied as a communication analyst, but the offer’s vagueness, no title, no role, just “per executive directive,” echoing like a line from a spy film, gnawed at her. She tilted her neck and murmured, “I’ll know today.” She ironed her best white blouse, slipped on a black skirt and low-heeled shoes, applied clean makeup, and dabbed on minimal perfume. Staring at her reflection, she steadied her trembling fingers. “Professional. Not desperate,” she whispered, adjusting her collar. She exhaled, grabbed her bag, and stepped out. Today, she’d enter Gravitas Corp and uncover what she’d truly signed up for.
