Chapter 16 Our friends, Mary and Max Kidd, who lived in Calcutta, invited us to have dinner with them on the last night of my sojourn in the nursing home. I looked forward to that dinner with eager anticipation, for it has to be said that, although the accommodation and attention received from the nurses was satisfactory, the cuisine left a great deal to be desired. Only the gnawing pangs of hunger forced me to swallow the food which in normal times I would have described as repugnant. I have heard of loving husbands bringing bouquets to their wives, but in my case I asked Ron to bring me only sausage rolls from Firpo's. Every night, to appease my hunger, he would arrive with rolls, sandwiches, pies and cakes which not only pleased me, but delighted the nurses who were likewise badly fed
