I could hear the pain in his voice.
“I can only imagine.” Trying to empathize.
“Is that why you didn’t have more children?” Eve asked.
“When we sought out the fairy to complete the charm, there was a price that had to be paid. We didn’t know it at the time. I no longer could have children.” Izzy told us.
A sorrowful silence filled the air. I found myself holding Eve’s hand. It was one thing for a woman to make the decision not to have children, but to have the choice taken away without consent was heartbreaking.
“Can we please talk about you all staying here?” Izzy said, plastering on a smile.
“I have school,” Kennedy blurted out.
“You can finish here.” Mikel told her.
“But that isn’t what I want. If I never become a phoenix I will be safe, right?”
