Chapter 15

1187 Words
Gavin had a look on his face that I couldn’t explain. I wanted to ask about Dustin but didn’t want to put Gavin in that position. He and Kennedy were getting a long and I didn’t want to make things awkward.  Glancing down at my watch, I realized Vince was late. That was never a good sign on a first date. About 15 minutes later, there was a knock at the door.  When I opened the door, there stood Vince. He was always handsome, but unlike in high school, I didn’t get any butterflies when I saw him.  “Hi Eve. Wow, you look amazing.”  “Thanks. Are you ready?” I didn’t feel the need to introduce him to my children and he didn't seem to want to meet them either. “Night guys.” Pulling the door closed behind me. Vince was a gentleman and opened the car door, pulled out my chair and even stood to help me when I excused myself to use the bathroom.  But the conversation seemed forced. I’m sure that was more on me than Vince. My mind kept comparing him to Dustin and there was no comparison. Not to mention Vince mentioned his ex-wife at least 15 times through dinner. I could tell he was still in love with her. If he wasn't talking about his ex-wife, it was about himself and how much money he made. I had to stop myself from rolling my eyes multiple times. I even tried to skip dessert, but before I could respond to the waiter, he ordered us cheesecake.  "Serena never let me order dessert. She was obsessed about her figure." He said the moment the food was placed in front of him. Was that a dig at my weight? Was I over thinking it? Even if I was over thinking it, I didn't care. There was no way I was ever going out with this man again. Thank God we never had a chance to date in high school. I now understood why he was divorced. **Gavin** Shit, s**t, s**t!  Dustin is going to freakout when he finds out she is going on a date with another man. Do I make an excuse and portal back to his realm? Maybe I can just send him a message and pray the warrior on duty hears his phone.  He just woke up today and planned to come and see Everly tomorrow. The cut he received during the fight not only caused massive blood loss but also had poison on the blade. We all realized the demon and fairy fight had been planned to get to Dustin. The cut was no accident. But we had no idea why. “Gavin!”  “What?”  Kennedy started giggling. “You didn’t hear a thing I said, did you?”  “I’m sorry baby.” “What’s wrong?”  “Nothing, I was just imagining ice cream and brownies.”  “Oh, I can run out and get us some.”  “Nope. I will run out and get some. Do you want anything else?”  “No. Do you want me to go with you?”  “You relax. I won’t be gone long.” I kissed her quickly and made my way to my hotel. The second I stepped into the hotel room, I opened a portal to Dustin’s realm. Thank goodness I could just portal in. Dustin made sure of it before coming back before the attack. Typically, you would end up at the gates if you were a visitor. “Dustin!” I almost yelled as I pushed open his office door. He was looking better but he was still not back to himself. “What’s wrong? Is Everly OK?” The worry clear in his voice.  “Depends on how you define wrong.”  “Spit it out Gavin!”  “She is on a date with another man,” I mumbled.  “WHAT?”  “Calm down, brother.” Faith interrupted. “Explain.”  “I was with Kennedy and Eve came out looking all dressed up and left with some guy she knows.” I spit out.  Dustin's growl almost shook the room.  “Dustin, relax. I’m sure once she compares your dates to this guy she won’t go out with him again.”  All the blood drained from Dustin’s face.  “I actually haven’t taken her on a date yet,” he muttered.  “WHAT?” She yelled at him.  “I was planning on it. I just wanted to give her time to get used to me.” “That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.”  “I’m going to get her.”  “No, you are not! You can’t go all caveman and carry her home from her date.”  “WATCH ME!” He yelled back at his sister. I needed to get out of here but I couldn’t stop watching.  “You will scare her away if you do that.” “What am I supposed to do?”  “We will come up with something.” She encouraged with a smile.  “Look, I need to get back and get brownies but I wanted you to know.”  “If you let him kiss her I will kill you.” Dustin stated matter of factly.  “Noted.” I replied before running like my life depended on it and opening a portal back to my hotel room.  I rushed to the closest store and grabbed brownies, some snacks and some flowers for my girl. My plan was to make her fall in love with me and then tell her I was a Kappi. Maybe I should tell her first, but I’m afraid, just like Dustin, that she will run.  Thankfully, the time with Dustin only cost me an extra 10 minutes, which I could explain with traffic.  “Hey babe. These are for you.” I handed Kennedy the flowers as I went into the house.  “These are beautiful.” Blush rising on her cheeks.  The rest of the evening seemed to go by smoothly but I had to figure out how to make sure this guy didn’t kiss Eve. I don’t think Dustin was joking about his comment. “How late do you think your Mom will be gone?” I asked Brayden.  “No idea. This is the first date she’s been on since my Dad and they didn’t really go out much.”  “Really?”  “Yeah, my Dad just liked being home.”  “And your Mom?”  “Don’t really know. She just did whatever made Dad happy, but from the stories she liked going out before us.”  “Feel like some one on one?” I asked him. Hoping that if we were outside I could try to run interference.  “Kennedy?”  “I don’t care but I’m staying inside and finishing this series.” She pointed to the TV.  Just as we got outside and started playing, Eve and her date pulled into the driveway. Here we go.
