Chapter 2: A Bentley Accident

1157 Words
Michael hung up on Ethan and was about to start the car parked by the roadside when—bam! He felt a hard hit on the rear door of his car. Slamming on the brakes, he glanced in the rearview mirror and saw a young woman on an electric scooter who had rear-ended him. She had fallen to the ground along with her scooter, and it looked like she hadn’t taken a light fall. “How do you even drive?” Michael frowned as he got out of the car to assess the situation. Seeing the girl wincing in pain on the ground, the usually cold and distant man felt an uncharacteristic surge of sympathy. He reached out to help her up. Lily looked at the man standing before her. He exuded an aura of cool detachment. His head was slightly lowered, with fine strands of hair falling over his brow, partially shading his eyes. His sharp gaze, prominent nose, and thin lips made him strikingly handsome. It was the first time Lily had ever seen such a good-looking man, and she found herself momentarily spellbound. “If you’re not hurt, stand on your own.” Michael noticed her dazed expression and spoke with a hint of impatience. Lily snapped out of it and quickly let go of the hand she had been clutching, feeling embarrassed. “I’m fine. I’m so sorry! I was in a hurry to get to the hospital and wasn’t paying attention to the road. Do you think your car needs any repairs? Could we settle this privately…?” Just as she finished speaking, her eyes caught sight of the car's emblem at the rear—Bent… Bentley? And it looked like the top-of-the-line model! Lily suddenly felt her heart skip a beat. “We can settle it privately. The compensation fee is seven figures.” The man agreed without hesitation, his voice cool and detached. Lily: “…” Seven figures! Even if she worked herself to the bone designing for ten years, she wouldn’t be able to earn that kind of money! Lily glanced at the street sign. She had been too rushed earlier, only focused on dealing with the situation and getting to the hospital, and hadn’t realized that this small road she passed by every day was a no-parking zone! “Sir, parking is prohibited here, and just now, you started without honking…” “So, you’re saying it’s my fault?” “No, I’m just saying that, technically speaking, we both share some responsibility… So, could you maybe reduce the compensation a little?” After all, she had hit his car, and it was such an expensive luxury vehicle. Lily couldn’t in good conscience say she wasn’t at fault at all—she really hadn’t been paying attention. Michael noticed that her hand was quite badly scraped, her face was dirty, and her outfit suggested she was a recent college graduate without much money. But despite that, her expression was sincere, her tone honest, and she made no attempt to avoid responsibility. This changed his impression of her considerably. “Forget it. No compensation needed.” With that, Michael turned and started walking back to his car. Lily was stunned. She quickly expressed her gratitude: “Thank you! How about this—I’ll leave you my business card. If anything comes up with your car later, feel free to contact me. I’ll pay you back, even if it means selling everything I own!” After finishing her sentence, Lily handed Michael a business card and then limped over to pick up her damaged scooter. She tried to start it, but the scooter remained unresponsive. Lily’s face tightened with worry as she tried several more times to no avail. Her scooter was broken. Seeing her in such a pitiful state, Michael, for reasons unknown even to himself, casually slipped the business card into his suit pocket and, without thinking, asked, “Which hospital? I’ll drive you there.” Lily turned around, surprised, and instinctively wanted to refuse. They were complete strangers—how could she accept such a big favor from him? But Michael didn’t give her the chance to decline. He simply opened the trunk and loaded her scooter inside. Lily watched in shock as he worked, nervous that he might scratch or dent his car while handling her things. “Rosewood First Hospital, thank you.” Since things had progressed this far, Lily didn’t hesitate any longer and got into the passenger seat. However, after fumbling around for a while, she couldn’t find the seatbelt. A tall shadow suddenly loomed over her, and when Lily looked up, the man had already buckled her seatbelt for her. Only then did she realize that the seatbelt in such a luxury car was positioned further back. Her face flushed slightly, and she caught a faint whiff of his sophisticated cologne as he leaned in. Michael drove her directly to the hospital entrance. As she got out, he even carefully helped her unload her scooter. Lily was deeply moved. Just as she was about to thank him again, the man had already started the car and sped away. She thought to herself that this gentleman was cold on the outside but warm on the inside. Quietly, she sent a silent blessing in the direction he had driven off: “I wish you good health and great fortune!” With that, Lily parked her scooter and hurried into the hospital. … “How are you, Mom?” In the emergency room, a middle-aged woman sat resting in the IV area with her eyes closed. “Why are you here? I’m fine, just felt a little dizzy. I’ll be ready to go home after the IV drip.” Grace Evans took her daughter’s hand, reassuring her. Lily felt a pang of sadness. Her father had passed away early, leaving nothing for the family. A month ago, her mother had been diagnosed with brain cancer, but because they couldn’t afford the treatment, she had refused hospitalization. Lately, her health had been deteriorating, and she had said that her only wish was to see her only daughter married, with someone to take care of her and a happy life ahead. That was why Lily had agreed to go on blind dates and promised to get married soon. “How was it? Did you meet any nice boys today?” Grace asked weakly. Lily nodded, holding her mother’s hand tightly. “Yes, if he’s interested in me too, he’ll contact me tomorrow and come over for dinner.” “Good, good! My Lily is so wonderful—there’s no doubt about it!” Grace smiled contentedly. In the black Bentley, Michael stared at the business card the girl had given him and the contact information his assistant had sent. The name and phone number were identical. Could it really be such a coincidence? It was her.
