A grim light was casting a 4'o clock shadow over the tender face of ten years old Lu Sheng He. He didn't know why he, no-- why they got to this point, ah. He didn't.
It was the third time that he had woken from the same nightmare in the same night. Sometimes he would be the one pushing Su Wen Hui off the roof and sometimes it would be that woman. He couldn't decipher whether it was his fault or Samantha's.
Either way, he had hurt his father, his adopted father, Su Wen Hui. The person who took him in when he was in the most despair. Ironically, he had been the one who pushed Su Wen Hui in the most despair.
"Why are you here?" The voice spoke. Lu Sheng He looked up, startled out of his self-deprecation. Only then did he realized that he’d been standing in front of the door for almost half an hour. Now Su Wen Hui had opened the door and was looking at him from up above.
His lean body was more evident in the silk pajamas; the wide collars displayed his tender collarbones. His long legs stood out the most, giving him a princely charm.
"I...sleep....." Lu Sheng He tried to speak but for some reason, his throat closed up yet again. Just like before he couldn't utter a single word in front of this person.
Su Wen Hui looked down at the strange kid who stood silently in front of his room's door at 3 am. This child’s really strange, thought Su Wen Hui. According to his observations, this kid stayed silent all the time. He would have suspected if Lu Sheng He was mute if he hadn't spoken just now.
He had stayed silent even at dinner, although Old Zhu was nagging him constantly, asking for his favorites. When he had asked what he was doing in front of his door the child choked out a few words but then stopped.
Before he could probe further the child looked like he was going to cry again. Panic settled in his heart and the words were stuck in his throat. His lips pursed as he stared at the child with worry in his heart.
He couldn't help but see a bullied kitten in front of him. His hand unconsciously lifted just like this morning and a stiff pat was delivered to the nest of soft and silky hair. The feeling wasn't bad at all. His heart stirred once again.
"You want to sleep here?" Su Wen Hui realized later what he had asked or rather indicated to...
Lu Sheng He was surprised as his big sparkling eyes stared at Su Wen Hui. His breath hitched in his throat.
He had never slept with anyone in his childhood and even if he didn't want to accept this himself but he had always yearned for a warm body beside him that would promise protection. He also wanted to hug a body and snuggle into it, as he would sleep soundly. Someone who would stroke his head until he slept.
Afraid that Su Wen Hui would take back his words, Lu Sheng He immediately shook his head. Su Wen Hui who was going to make an excuse for his straightforwardness caught those excited eyes and couldn’t help but let in the kid.
It was also his first time sleeping with someone. Su Wen Hui had a rather lonely childhood. He didn’t make any friends and was tutored by teachers at home. His parents always busy with business work and before they could take any time to spend with him, they were already gone…
Now that he looked back, he really is miserable. But maybe now things would change?
He felt at ease with this kid for some strange reason. As if they had a bond. The reason for it might be that they shared the same lonely and miserable childhood.
Lu Sheng He looked around and took in the room that he had been to a handful of times. However, it was the same just like he remembered; plain and extravagant. Seemed like Su Wen Hui was a robot. The way he lived was simple and robotic. He would eat, sleep, and only work.
Su Wen Hui pulled off the covers messily. Lu Sheng Hui stood at the other side of the bed silently and looked at him. Su Wen Hui then walked to him, led him to the bed, and tucked him in carefully.
Lu Sheng Hui just went according to his instructions like a good child. However, his insides were itching to smile. This version of Su Wen Hui was really cute. He wanted to spend more time with this Su Wen Hui.
His head turned towards the person beside him, who now laid like a robot, straight, facing the roof with closed eyes. His breathing was coming smooth from that small straight nose; long eyelashes arced beautifully, complimenting that beautiful face. Suddenly, those closed eyes revealed dark brown pupils that astounded him. His heartbeat seemed to get faster.
Lu Sheng Hui immediately snapped himself out of whatever strange trance he was going into and averted his gaze.
Cute, thought Su Wen Hui as he saw the kid averting his gaze in a hurry. He had been feeling the same intense stare from the dinner’s time when he was trying to sleep. He didn’t expect the child to be the one staring at him again.
“Be Good. Sleep.” He said. His voice heard like a soothing melody in the night’s silence to Lu Sheng He’s ears. Only if he could hear it daily before sleep.
Huh?!
The thought startled Lu Sheng He. However, this made him remember that it was the next day of his arrival when Su Wen Hui left for a business trip for a week. It was another reason that he had felt unwelcomed at Su residence, resulting in a deep hidden grudge, which Samantha took advantage of later.
No, not this time.
“Can I sleep here tomorrow as well?” Lu Sheng He went straight to the point. Although, he had just arrived and hadn’t talked with Su Wen Hui at all, asking him wasn’t something out of place. That’s what at least he thought.
Su Wen Hui was a bit surprised by the question but remained silent. He again closed his eyes, not answering the child. The intense stare was again directed at him, which always made him uncomfortable.
“Sleep.” After a while, he couldn’t help but say. The child was too stubborn. Would he regret taking in this child? Only time could tell…
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Butler Zhu knocked at the door and waited but no reply came. His eyebrows knitted briefly before he knocked again. This time was the same as before, no reply. This had never before. Young master Su always woke up early, and when he would knock to call for breakfast he always replied in affirmation. He never had to knock for a second time.
What is it? Is young master Su sick?
He decided to check himself. When he was about to open the door, it was opened itself and a nest of silky hairs came into view. Butler Zhu looked down and was surprised to see the little master in young master Su’s room. Anxiety bloomed in his heart.
“What is little master doing in younger Su’s room? Quick, leave with this old butler before young master Su sees you. He will be mad if he saw you here.”
“It’s fine. Take him to change for the day.” Butler Zhu looked at the young master Su with wide eyes who came from the room and then looked down at the little master again, this time with a little appreciation and some… gratitude?
“Meet you at breakfast.” Su Wen Hui said to the kid and retired to the restroom to get ready for the day.
Lu Sheng He looked at the young man and then turned to butler Zhu. He thought that he might have misunderstood butler Zhu’s emotions from before. What was there for gratitude? Even after being raised with such care, in the end, he became a white-eyed wolf, biting the hands that fed him.
“Let’s go, little master.” Butler Zhu had a good feeling about this little master. Yesterday when the young master Su told him that they were taking in the kid found on the grounds of Su residence, he strongly opposed it but couldn’t say much in front of the young master Su. How could he not worry? Young Master Su had just lost his parents. To top it off, he didn’t have any close relatives to take care of him or even console him sincerely. Those relatives who are there, they are only worried about snatching whatever the Su couple had left for young master Su.
Right now young master Su was dealing with the competitive business affairs of Su Inc. as all of his relatives are trying to crush his position in the company. Death of the Su couple had made him the major shareholder now, hence the heir of Su Inc. and the current chairperson.
Some might even target his life. How it was a wise decision to take in a child whose origins were unknown?
However, what happened today showed that taking in this child might not be that bad of a decision?
Young master Su never let anyone in his room, far from sleeping with him. He was always a closed-off person since his childhood. But this child somehow managed to enter in young master’s room. This was a start to make young master open up to others and rely on them for once in a while. Young Master Su was indeed a capable and responsible person but he was the type to carry all the crushing burden alone instead of asking or accepting someone else’s help. This worried butler Zhu the most.
Ones who carry the entire burden alone, are crushed viciously by the world.
