Chapter 3: New Life

904 Words
Evara The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the soft, golden light spilling through the cracks in the cabin’s rough wooden walls. I could smell the forest, damp earth, pine, and something faintly sweet that I couldn’t name. It was quiet, except for the gentle creak of the floorboards and the hum of birds outside. I slipped out of bed, careful not to disturb the Ashwoods, and padded down the narrow hallway. The cabin was small, but it felt alive and cozy in a way I’d never known a place could be. Mrs. Ashwood was at the tiny counter, kneading dough, and Mr. Ashwood sat at the table, drinking coffee and staring out the window. “Good morning, sleepyhead,” Mrs. Ashwood said without turning, her voice soft but teasing. My cheeks flushed, and I stepped fully into the room. “Morning,” I whispered, unsure if my voice would break the morning calm. “You’ve been up early,” Mr. Ashwood said, folding his newspaper. “Didn’t want to sleep in?” I shook my head. “I… I like being here. Watching you. It feels… nice.” It had been a month since the Ashwoods found me wondering in the forest, a month since they saved my life . I still don’t remember much of what happened or how I ended up in this pack in the first place but I’m just happy that this family is the one that found me. Mrs. Ashwood finally looked at me. Her hazel eyes softened, and she gestured to the chair beside her. “Come sit. Let me brush your hair while I finish breakfast.” I hesitated, my fingers twisting nervously. Let someone touch my hair? Someone who wasn’t my own mother? That was… strange. But something in her tone, gentle, and warm made me trust her. I sat. Her hands worked through my hair with careful strokes, and I felt a tension I didn’t realize I carried start to loosen. Mr. Ashwood poured me a cup of tea and handed it to me. I wrapped my hands around it, feeling the warmth seep in. His gaze lingered a moment longer than necessary, and I felt seen, like I mattered here. “Evara…” Mrs. Ashwood said softly, almost teasing. “Soon, you’ll be meeting someone very important.” I froze, my stomach twisting. “Important?” “Yes,” Mr. Ashwood said. “The Alpha of our pack. You’ll meet him and his family. It’s tradition, and part of our work at the pack house. You’ll be coming with us.” In the past month I’ve stayed here with Naya, doing chores and playing together like normal ten year olds. My heart skipped. The pack Alpha. I’d heard whispers since I arrived. They say he is powerful, commanding, untouchable. And now, I was going to meet him. And his family. And the very place the Ashwoods worked to maintain the balance of the pack. “But… I don’t know what to say or do,” I admitted quietly, gripping the cup tighter. Mrs. Ashwood brushed a stray lock of hair from my face. “Just be yourself. That’s more than enough. Don’t worry sweetheart we’ll be with you every step.” Mr. Ashwood ruffled my hair, letting out a small chuckle. “It might feel intimidating, but you always find your rhythm, Evara. You’ll do fine.” I nodded, nerves still twisting in my stomach, but comforted by their warmth. Even though meeting the Alpha could change everything, even though I didn’t know what to expect, I felt… ready. Breakfast passed in quiet, the kind of silence that felt safe, the cabin smelling of fresh bread and pine. When the last crumbs were eaten, the Ashwoods stood and gathered their things. “Come on,” Mrs. Ashwood said, slipping on an old tired coat, being omegas also meant they did not have a lot of money but still, I couldn’t understand why they’re so poor.“It’s time.” I followed, my boots crunching against the dirt path outside. The forest stretched around us, quiet and protective. It was hard to believe that just beyond these trees waited a whole new world. The Alpha, his family, the pack house, and everything I didn’t know yet. The walk was silent, just me and Naya kicking small rocks along the way while taking in the scenery. Trees were tall and green, the smell of pine and earth pressing through. My pulse quickened with every step I took. When the pack house finally appeared through the trees, I stopped breathing for a second. It was bigger than I expected, solid stone and dark wood, a fortress that somehow radiated coldness, or maybe it was just me. Figures moved in the yard with effortless confidence, their presence commanding respect. “This is it,” Mr. Ashwood said softly. “Your first step into a bigger world. Don’t be afraid. We’re here.” I took a deep breath, steadying myself. My heart pounded, my hands trembled, but beneath the nerves, a spark of determination flickered. I would meet the Alpha and his family on my own terms. And as we approached the pack house, guided by the Ashwoods, I realized… maybe this mysterious, intimidating world could be the place where I truly recover and get the help I need and find what or who killed my family.
