Maya’s POV “Mr. Kane,” the receptionist says. She stands up fast. She looks nervous now. “I asked you a question, Laura,” he says. His voice is sharp. “Who gave you the right to send people away? You know the rules. You call my office. I decide if I want to see them. Not you.” She swallows hard. She looks at the floor like looking at him hurts. “Come with me.” It takes me a second to realize he’s talking to me. But when I see the receptionist glaring at me and Marcus walking away, I almost trip trying to catch up. He walks through a fancy waiting room. We reach a glass elevator. It’s very high-tech. It has a touch screen. He types in some code and presses a floor number. He stands close to me. Too close. The elevator feels small even though it’s big. I can smell him. Mint and something else. Something that smells like safety. My heart beats faster. He doesn’t look at me though. I start to worry this plan won’t work. Maybe he doesn’t like me as much as Amy thinks. I feel weird knowing I’m only wearing underwear under this coat. The elevator stops. The doors open. It’s a huge space. The floors are shiny marble. The walls are granite. Everything looks expensive. “Where is your office?” I ask. I look around at the beautiful space. He glances at me. His face shows nothing. “This is my office.” My eyes get big. He keeps walking. He goes around a corner. There’s his desk. Behind it are huge windows. They show the whole city below. It’s gorgeous. My stomach feels tight with nerves. He doesn’t sit at his desk. Instead, he turns to face me. He leans against the desk. His arms cross over his chest. I swallow hard. I look at him. He wears a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up. I can see his strong arms. His dark pants fit him perfectly. My wolf makes a happy sound inside me. I catch myself staring at him for too long. He clears his throat. I jump. My eyes shoot up to meet his. He’s smirking. Like he caught me. My face burns with embarrassment. “So, what did you come here for?” he asks. Oh. Right. Why I’m here. “I have a problem. I need your help,” I say fast. He raises one eyebrow. “What kind of problem?” I clear my throat. “My father was arrested two nights ago. His business failed. He owes a lot of money. About five million dollars.” He stares at me. He’s waiting for me to keep talking. Waiting to hear what I want from him. “I was hoping you could help him. Maybe pay the debt so my father can get out of jail?” I ask. I bite my lip. He’s quiet. He thinks about my words. Then he rubs his face with his hands. “And what would I get in return?” he asks. I swallow hard. Be confident, I tell myself. Be brave. I lift my head up high. I look him right in the eyes. It’s dangerous to look an Alpha in the eyes. Even more dangerous to look a Lycan in the eyes. But Marcus doesn’t look angry. He looks interested. “Well,” I start. I make my voice low and soft. I step closer to him. “At the party, we had a connection.” My face feels hot saying these words. “I thought maybe…” I take a deep breath. I undo my coat a little. He can see some of my red underwear now. But not all of it. His eyes go dark. He looks at my body. I almost melt under his stare. I suddenly feel brave. I reach out and touch his arm. “I thought maybe I could do favors for you in return,” I say in a sexy voice. “I’m a college student. I’m clean. I’ve never had s*x before. But I’m on birth control. So you don’t need to worry about anything.” His breathing gets heavy. He stands up straight. The space between us disappears. Being this close to him makes me dizzy. His smell surrounds me. I can’t think straight. He reaches up. His fingers touch my cheek. Warmth spreads through my whole body. We’re so close I think I might pass out from the heat. His eyes are dark. Like they were in the hotel room. He swallows. I watch his throat move. I close my eyes. I wait for him to kiss me. I can feel his breath on my lips. I lean in closer. But the kiss never comes. Instead, I feel him fixing my coat. Covering me up. My eyes fly open. I look at his serious face. “Do you really think I need to pay a woman for s*x?” he asks. “You said it yourself. I have many options.” My face turns red. “I just thought—” “You thought you could use your body to pay for my help,” he says. He interrupts me. “You are young, Miss Montague. You will regret making choices like this later.” How does he know my last name? I never told him. Did he look me up? My heart jumps at the thought. But his words are crushing me. He doesn’t want me. I look down. My face is so hot. I know he can see how embarrassed I am. When he speaks again, his voice is softer. Kinder. “Look, I have a daughter,” he tells me. “I would never teach her to use her body like this. I want better for her future. I expect better from her.” He reaches out. His fingers touch my neck. My breath catches. I look into his eyes. “I expect better from you,” he says. My heart sinks. Disappointment fills me. He’s right. I am better than this. I nod. I open my mouth to speak. But I hear footsteps behind me. I turn around. Two security guards stand there. I whip around to look at Marcus. My eyes are wide. “My time is up. My patience is gone,” Marcus says. He looks at me briefly. Then he looks at the security guards. “Please escort Miss Montague out of the building.” “Yes sir,” they both say. They stand on each side of me. I stare at Marcus. I’m shocked. I don’t fight the security guards. They tell me to come with them. “Thank you for your time,” I manage to say. Then I turn and leave. I want to cry from shame. But I know what’s more important right now. I need a new job. A real job. ----- “I’m so excited we get to work together,” Amy says with a big smile. “And you look great in that uniform.” I look down at what I’m wearing. I feel ridiculous. It’s a short skirt and a crop top. It shows way too much. I feel like I’m on display. This is especially true at night when this place turns into a club. The men here are rich. They tip well. It’s a chance I can’t pass up when I need money. “That’s what friends are for,” she says. She bumps my arm with hers. She looks behind me and sighs. “Looks like we’re getting a group of guys. Good luck,” she says. I sigh and turn to greet the customers. But then I freeze when I see who’s with them. Derek. “You were right,” I hear one of his friends say. “She does work here. This is going to be fun.” “Hey, waitress girl, can we get a table? Or are you just going to stare at us?” another one says. I grab menus and put them on the table. I wait for each of them to sit down. “I’m not a—please, take your seats.” As I lean over to put beers in front of them, one of them grabs my butt. My whole body freezes. “I like this little uniform. How about you take it off so we can see what’s underneath?” My body goes hot. I step back from the table fast. His hand drops. “Don’t touch me,” I say loudly. “Oh, come on, Maya. Aren’t you here to make men happy?” another friend asks. “So come here and make us happy. Sit on my lap.” I press my lips together. “I’m not that kind of girl,” I tell them. “I’m a waitress.” “You got this job because you’re hot,” one of them laughs. “The manager didn’t care about your skills. He cared about whether you could flirt with customers and make him money. I’ll give you a good tip if you let me see what’s under your uniform. Come sit on my lap.” My blood goes cold. “Come here, baby,” he says. He pats his lap and winks at me. I just stare. I can’t believe this is happening. I look at Derek. He’s watching me. Waiting to see what I’ll do. How can he let his friends talk to me like this? Once upon a time, he would never have allowed this. He would have hit anyone who looked at me with lust in their eyes. Now he acts like he doesn’t care. “I’ll give you ten thousand dollars if you drink this whole beer,” one of his friends says. My mouth almost falls open. “What?” I ask. “You heard me,” he answers. “Drink this whole beer. You’ll get ten thousand dollars.” “We’ll all give you ten thousand dollars each if you drink all our beers,” another one says. I stare at the beer. Then at the men. My eyes land on Derek again. He raises his eyebrows. Waiting for my answer. I swallow my pride. I step toward the table. I grab one of the glasses. I really don’t like beer. But money is money. I know Derek’s friends are rich. They can easily pay that much. I need the cash to get my father out of jail. To pay his debt. I bring the cup to my lips. I let the liquid run down my throat. I hate the bitter taste. But I keep going until the cup is empty. His friends cheer and yell as I drink. I slam the cup on the counter. I look at the next guy. He slides his beer to me. He winks. I chug his beer too. I’m halfway through the third glass when someone grabs my wrist. Hard. I’m yanked away from the table. I hear Derek’s friends booing. They tell him he’s ruining the fun. I don’t know where Derek is taking me. He’s quiet. We get outside. Then he spins around to glare at me. “Accept my offer. Stop this foolishness,” he orders. “I won’t be your mistress, Derek,” I tell him. I narrow my eyes. My head feels fuzzy from the beer. “Forget about it.” “You’d rather act like a slut instead?” he asks through his teeth. “You looked ridiculous in there!” “Why do you care? You have your fiancée. This is my business. My business doesn’t include you anymore.” “You are still mine, Maya. You will always be mine,” he growls. I want to laugh. But I also want to cry. He was so sweet once. I spent more than a year loving this man. Now he’s a stranger. “I am not yours,” I tell him. My voice comes out strong. Good. He laughs. But it’s a mean laugh. “Fine. Be a w***e for all I care,” he growls. “Spread your legs for money. Because that’s all you’re good for—” I can’t stop myself. My hand swings. It hits his cheek. The slap is loud. He doesn’t flinch. But he gets angrier. He reaches for my throat. Then he freezes. He looks at my neck. The color drains from his face. “What the hell,” he hisses. He grabs my chin. He yanks my head to the side. “Is that a hickey?” I remember the hickey Marcus left on me. It’s still there. Fading but visible. “So what if it is?” I ask. He lets go of my chin. He glares at me. His eyes are ice cold. “Who the hell have you been with?” “That’s not your business,” I say back. I turn to walk away. But he grabs my arm. Hard. I whimper in pain. He whips me around to face him. “Answer my question, Maya! Who have you been with?!” Through my teeth, I answer. “Marcus. Your future father-in-law. Happy now?” He lets me go. He laughs. But it sounds crazy. “You’re kidding me, right? You don’t have to make up such a stupid story,” Derek says through his laughing. I hear more laughing nearby. Derek’s friends are gathering around us. “Is she talking about Marcus Kane? He has standards. He would never go for a girl like Maya.” “Yeah, Maya is a nobody and Marcus is a Lycan chairman. No way,” another friend laughs. “I’m telling the truth,” I say. I cross my arms over my chest. This time Derek grabs my throat. His look turns deadly. “Stop playing games and tell me the truth,” he growls. “Marcus would never want someone like you. You are nobody. You don’t belong in his world.” I can’t breathe. His hands are too tight around my throat. So I can’t answer. “Now, how about you do what I say? Move into the house I bought. Once I get married, I’ll visit you at night. You can spread your pretty legs for me only—” There’s a loud honk nearby. Derek drops his hold on my neck. I cough. I rub my sore neck. He glares at whoever interrupted us. I look at the black Bentley. I frown when the door opens. I gasp when I see Marcus sitting in the back seat. His eyes are on me. “Get in,” he orders. I stare at him. I can’t believe this is happening. “I won’t ask again, Maya,” he says through his teeth. I feel Derek’s shocked eyes on me. I quickly hurry to the car. I get in. I close the door behind me. “Drive,” Marcus orders the driver. “Yes, sir.” The car starts moving. Derek stands on the sidewalk. His mouth is hanging open. His friends look equally shocked. Marcus glances at me. My face turns red. “Using me to make your ex-fiancé jealous, are you?”
