Chapter 24
KateKate sighed as she grabbed a glass of water in the kitchen and opened her laptop on the counter. Her neck cracked as she wriggled it from side to side. The stress was mounting. She’d spent the last few days looking for jobs online while Adam was at preschool. As much as she loved Carlton Bay, there were just no opportunities available.
She rested her chin on her palm. Shoulders slumped, she’d begun to feel desperate; uncertain of what she could do to earn a more stable income. Should I just go back home? she wondered. “No,” she said out loud. There was no way she could do that to Adam—or to Evan.
A notification popped up on her screen. It was a message from Kate’s mom, Helen.
Are you there?
Kate checked the time. It was nearly 1:00am in the Philippines.
