The next day, I decided to walk into town and relax. I get ready in my overall jean shorts, leaving one strap undone with my blue sports bra showing. I put a floral headband over my dark brown curls and adjusted my black framed glasses before grabbing my blue converses and heading out.
As I headed into the coffee shop, I noticed two homeless men on the outside and grabbed them both a coffee with a chocolate chip muffin before heading back inside to get my own. When I come back out, I hand them both money before hugging them and heading to the thrift shop. I grab some clothes head back to the men and hand the clothes to them before making my way inside a bakery.
I had started to feel a pull in my chest ever since I entered the coffee shop, looking around I didn’t see anyone and it didn’t grow, so I continued to ignore it, By the time I got my cupcake, I made my way over to the little girl on the outside and decided to hand it to her instead. I watch her mother frantically search her purse but am quick to stop her. I instead nod to the homeless man, she smiles and I head to the bread shop. Tony the owner smiles at me and hands me two old loaves of bread as he embraces me before he is called back inside.
As I made my way to the park, the pang came stronger and I continued to search around, among the many faces on the street. I slowly made my way to sit on the bench, tearing up bread and throwing it into the large pond. I admire the fish coming up that snatch the bread before darting below, but I still can’t shake the pang. I rubbed my chest and looked around, but I didn’t see my mate anywhere, it was like he liked toying with me.
I try to ignore it as I watch the ducks slowly waddle their way to me. I can’t help but laugh. I throw more bread in before I’m out and I revel in the beauty of the day while listening to the ducks quacking away.
I briefly closed my eyes and leaned back letting the sun’s rays hit my face, and I’m thankful I remembered to put sunscreen on because I would be burning right now.
My eyes burst open as my chest got tighter and the pang became intense, This was it, had he finally decided to meet me?
I look around again, but I’m taken aback when Matthew plops down on the side of me shoving his ice cream in my face. Just like that, the pang subsided and I know he walked away. He decided not to come because of Matt.
“Hey Mateless, want some?” He questioned as if I wasn’t about to have a wonderful moment meeting my mate. “I licked it, so I know you do.” His thin, dull pink lips turned into a half smile.
“No!” I shouted, standing up, maybe a little louder than I intended, but f**k, he just scared my soulmate away. He quickly grabbed my arm and shoved me back down.
“Are you crazy? You want everyone staring?” He hisses as he licks the chocolate running down his hand.
“Leave me alone, Matt!” I retorted, getting out of his grip and to my feet, scurrying into the crowd.
The rest of the day I spent at the homeless shelter and helping the owners with chores. I decided to take a walk on the path, and I still couldn’t shake the tug in my chest. It starts getting dark and I can hear the people leaving, but I love the sound of nature, so I walk a bit more before turning back.
“Hello, Mateless!” Came the irrefutable voice of Matthew, and he had been drinking as the smell of whiskey hit my nostrils.
“You know, you shouldn’t push me away, I believe your mate doesn’t want you and mine doesn’t either.” He steps from behind the bushes in front of me and I step back.
“So, you should just give me your virginity and be my mate.” He grabbed onto my wrist, and I continued walking backward panicking.
“No.” I screamed out, as I thrashed my wrist free, I turned but he jerked my hair and I fell backward, hitting my head on a rock.
“No, please, help me!” I yelled out as I watched him straddle me, leaning down.
“Matt, please, stop,” I begged him as my vision started to blur, still fighting him.
“Help me!” I yelled out once more but he quickly covered my mouth tearing away at my overalls.
“No...” I managed to muffle out, he locked his legs with mine and I could feel my tears start flowing down as he tried to shush me. The pang suddenly became more intense, and I bit down on Matt’s hand.
“Please Help me!” I screamed at the top of my lungs before Matt slapped me across the face and I started to succumb to the darkness as I felt blood coming from my head touching my shoulders and running down the side of my face.
The pain in my chest is the strongest I’ve felt and I see two figures fighting before I’m scooped up.
