"I like your apartment," Sage announces as we walk through my door. I was greeted as always by Hades with cuddles, but he soon realized I wasn't alone. I watch as my usually shy cat walks up to Sawyer and starts to rub himself on his pants.
"Your cat seems to like me," Sawyer says as he bends down to pick up the black ball of fur. This must be a good sign at least from the one thing I've counted on for the past four years now.
"He's usually very shy, I'm surprised he's not running under the sofa like normal." I shrug my shoulders, making my way to my bedroom.
"Want some help packing up?" Sage speaks up as he leans his body against my doorframe while crossing his arms. I still feel like I'm at a crossroads. I know I found my mates. I know I'm marked by them, I've waited for years and endured being the butt of jokes. I can finally start fresh, sort of speak and move into a literal mansion with men who will always choose me. So, why the hell is it so hard for me to pack up and go? He moves closer when he notices me not answering him. "Sweetheart, are you alright?"
"Sorry, I was just thinking about what I needed. Boxes I think are the only thing I'm missing," I force a smile as I move toward my dresser and begin to throw my clothes on the bed. "Would you and Sawyer mind going to a*****e and pick up some boxes, tape, and maybe something for us for lunch? I have a feeling it's going to be a long day,"
"You don't want one of us to stay and help you?" Sage asks as he grabs onto my waist.
"I don't think we'll get anything done," I turn around and bat my eyelashes. I think I just want a little time alone before I completely give up my entire life. Before I give up my independence, is that what it is? I'm scared because I've always been alone. That's my reasoning. No, there must be more, why am I fighting this?
"You know, you're probably right. It's taking everything I have to hold back from taking you right here, right now," Sage replies as he leans down kissing me.
"If we're starting, just know, I've been fighting the urge too," Sawyer utters as he begins to take off his shirt.
"No, no. It was just a kiss, you two were just leaving," I plaster a devilish smile on my innocent-looking face as Sage grabs Sawyer by the arm and drags him out of the room. I hear the front door close and Hades joins me in the room as I sit on the bed in pure contemplation. I need to fully understand why I'm finding it so hard to want to move. Almost as soon as I heard the door close not two minutes later there was a knock. Thinking one of the twins must have left something behind I open it with a smirk on my face only to be greeted by my longtime friend, Sarah.
"Oh, good you're home," Sarah throws herself on me in a hug. "I saw you come in here with two big guys. Were they trying to hurt you? Do you know them?" She grabs onto my shoulders looking directly into my eyes. Her stomach touches me and that's when I remember she was pregnant, something that was announced at her anniversary party.
"Wow. Sarah, how far along are you now?" I blurt out, maybe if I change the subject I won't have to tell her about my mates or me moving. It's not that she wouldn't be happy for me but then I'd have to get into the whole thing about me still being stuck. So, stuck in my old ways that the one thing I've been dreaming about, I can't really do.
"I'm five months. Listen Jessabelle, I came here because Matt was taken to jail," Sarah mutters as she sits on my sofa. Of course, it's about Matthew I had almost forgotten what he tried to do to me. "It wasn't for his usual drunk and disorderly either. When I got the call from him, he said that you were the one to put him there." Her tone became darker and accusatory. "Did you put him in there?"
"Sarah, he attacked me!" I retaliate as I continue standing. "I was in the park after dark heading home when he hit me and tried to r**e me,"
"No, I refuse to believe that!" She barks out as she stands up, putting her hand on her belly. "Matt would never do that, he likes you but he would not take it that far. You were mistaken, it was dark like you said, and it could have been anyone. I need you to call the police station and tell them you don't know who it is, tell them you drop the charges!"
"No, Sarah, I'm not mistaken. Mathew Winnfield followed me to the park and waited until everyone went home. He tracked me to the walking trail where he waited in a bush, hit me, and then tried to r**e me. Your brother has been trying to do that to me for years and can't take no for an answer." I voice out putting distance between us.
"Then you will regret it," She grabs her purse, slings it over her shoulder, and slams the door on her way out. I manage to get halfway to my room before another knock disrupts my thought process.
"Hello, mateless,"
