"I'm coming with you!" I roared as I moved toward the hall closet to grab a jacket.
"It's supposed to be your day off, my love," Sage uttered as he rushed to my side.
"I don't care I'm going," I retorted as I brushed his hand off my shoulder and pushed my arms through the sleeves of my cardigan. I didn't know what was happening, but knew I couldn't let Mr. Stone go through it alone. I have been there through everything with him and I wasn't going to start leaving him alone now. At first, I would leave work at work and take every day I had off. Now, with everything I barely take days off, I'm nowhere as bad as my boss, but I know he needs me.
"What's going on?" I opened my boss's door as Mr. Stone peered over my shoulder, waiting on the twins who fell behind.
"Ahh, Mr. Pavlov, Mr. Pavlov I'm glad you're here." William breathed out as he extended his hand to my mates.
"Ms. Carter," interrupted my assistant Bethany as she stood quietly by the door. "I have papers that require your attention."
"Bethany, I'm sure this can wait." I glanced back as I put my hand up.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Carter, but you haven't been in the office in a few days and I found these papers under some others. Well, they have to be signed by today."
"Please, little bird, take care of the important paperwork. I can handle this here." William recited as he squeezed his lips together.
"Okay, these aren't just a little." I looked on in disbelief at the stack of papers on my desk. "Where were these?"
"They were in your drawer. I was doing some cleaning. I know how much you love to keep your professional workplace clean, so I wanted to organize everything for when you come back. And I found them in the drawer as I put away the already signed copies." Bethany's eyes expanded as she plastered her face with a fake smile.
"I don't understand how I could have done that," I plopped down in my rolling office chair, trying to forget about the crisis in my boss's office and focus on the crisis on my own. I glanced back at my assistant to see her shrugging her shoulders in agreement. I'm usually so on top of things, organized, level-headed, and careful above all else. Then I glanced at the date on the paperwork, May 12th, 2234. The day before, I had attended my cousin's wedding, which was traumatic. Considering that the entire week was full of my family and friends having babies, baby showers, engagement parties, and anniversaries. Usually, there are two, maybe three people I know that will have a gathering that month, but to have nine in one week alone was overwhelming. When it got to Sunday, my cousin Octavia's wedding, well, let's just say I was out of my anxiety medication, and half of the people's parties I had attended were there. So, I started drinking at the open bar before the wedding and by the reception, I had knocked down the cake. That was not even the worst part. Thank all in all that Octavia and her husband Blake forgave me after I bought them a seventy-five-inch television and a kitten whom they named Kitty. That Monday I was so hungover it was the first time Mr. Stone had sent me home. I must have put all the paperwork in my drawer without thinking. How could I have been so irresponsible? How could I let myself get so low? Why don't I really feel changed now that I found my mates? What is holding me back? Will it be like this forever?
"Ms. Carter?" my assistant brought me out of my daze as I stared at the papers in my hand. "Ms. Carter?"
"Yes?" I relayed back as I managed to bring my eyes to meet hers. In shame? In embarrassment? In comfort?
"The papers need to be signed and faxed off today."
"Right, you're right, I'll get on it thank you,"
After an hour of reading and signing all the paperwork, I was concerned that my mates and my boss were still in the meeting. I didn't want to just barge in so I made myself busy and left to get us lunch.
"Hey," I pushed open the door with the many bags in my hands as I peeked inside. "I got us all something to eat."
"Yes, yes, thank you, little bird. I think you're right, it's time for a break at least."
"William, I brought your tuna salad on rye and almonds," I took out the food and placed it on the table. "I'm sorry, I don't know what you guys eat so I got a shmorgishborg of things." I laced the table with a chef salad, ham sandwich, cheeseburgers, fries, chips, nuggets, pizza, apples, oranges, and tacos. I watched Sawyer grab a burger and fries and Sage reach for the tacos and chips. I needed comfort so I went to my usual place of food and began eating a little of everything. "So, William, will you tell me what's going on?"
"It's a lot, little bird," Mr. Stone breathed out as he took the last bite of his sandwich. "We think someone in the company or associated with the company is siphoning money into an account in the Cayman Islands, among other things."
"Do... do we think it's like before? Do we think it's him?" I asked as I placed the last nugget into my mouth and I stared down at my boss. I didn't want to bring up his name, I didn't want to give him the satisfaction that we were still thinking about him even if he wasn't here.
"Right, now, we don't know," uttered Sawyer and he squeezed my leg in reassurance. "We contacted our investigator, researcher, and hacker, to help."
"Yes, because whatever happens to this company happens to us, and you don't f**k with the Pavlov twins. my kusayem v otvet." Sage smiled as he looked at me with a grin. I crinkled my eyebrows in confusion. "We bite back,"
