Silence lingered in the air, except for the faint ticking of the wall clock. Aurora Blackwood sat alone in the dim light of her office space, her polished fingers brushing over the worn leather cover of an old journal she had found by accident in the far end of her bookshelf. The scent of old paper clouded the air with dust—a mixture of history, mystery, and untold stories could be perceived behind a curtain of misery.
"Another wasted effort," she muttered, closing the journal with a sigh. "How long do I have to continue doing this"?
For years, Aurora continued in what seem to be an empty chase: a chase for artifacts linked to the death of her parents. A mystery she hoped to unravel either by hook or by crook. The journal, although promising at first glance, was just another disappointment amidst the lots. She leaned back in her leather chair, running a hand through her unruly black waist-length hair, and stared at the ceiling as if answers were written on them.
Her phone buzzed, breaking her thought. She reached for it and saw a message from her best friend and childhood, Evelyn.
Evelyn: Do me a favor, put yourself together and put on your best dress. You're welcome to tonight's auction at the Alucard Auctioning House. See you there.
A ghost of a smile appeared on her face, shaking her head. Evelyn and her tactics, she's good at buying her out of her thoughts.
“At your Majesty's command,” she said aloud to one in particular.
The evening’s event was held at the infamous Alucard Auction House, a towering glass building that gleamed like a jewel in the center of the city. Aurora adjusted the strap of her gown as she stepped into the grand hall. The room was buzzing with the elite, from business to politics all dressed to impress.
However, she had no intention of blending in. While others came for the spectacle, Aurora came with a purpose.
Her eyes scanned the room until they landed on the masterpieces of the night…an artifact displayed under a glass case. The intricate golden amulet shimmered under the lights, its surface etched with symbols that seemed to shift when viewed from different angles.
The Dracula Amulet.
Aurora ’s heart quickened. She had seen pictures of it in her mother's books before her demise, but this was her first time seeing it in person. Its beauty was mesmerizing, but she couldn’t shake the feeling coiling inside her.
“If looks could steal,” a deep voice drawled behind her.
Startled by the sudden distraction behind her, Aurora turned to find a man watching her with an expression that looks like amusement. He was tall and impeccably dressed, his dark hair slicked back with a strand covering his right side. Seems the strand is as disturbing as the man in person, his piercing grey eyes framed by sharp features.
“And what if I do?” she replied coolly, masking her surprise. “I fail to see how that happens to be your business?”
The corner of his mouth lifted in a smirk. “Not when it's in my territory.”
Studying him, she sensed an air of authority that made the other guests dull by comparison. He looked familiar but can't place a finger on who he is exactly, until she spotted a nearby banner bearing the name Alucard Auction House that realization dawned on her.
“Well…let me guess,” she said, folding her arms across her chest. “You’re the infamous Xander Alucard king of the businessworld.” Am I wrong?
He only smiled in returning confirming his identity. “And you are…?”
“Someone who doesn’t buy pretty trinkets just to lock them away in a vault,” she fired back regardless of who he is.
“Hmmm,” humming quietly, his tone laced with amusement. “A fighter for the freedom of antiques. Admirable.”
"And what's that…", the lights went dimmed cutting aurora short and the auctioneer’s voice boomed through the speakers.
“Ladies and gentlemen, you all are welcome to tonight’s event, the Dracula Amulet, a rare and priceless artifact steeped in mystery and legend.”
The crowd quieted as the bidding began. Aurora ’s pulse raced. She didn’t have the funds to compete with the billionaires in the room, but she had a plan. All she needed was for Xanderto be distracted.
To her dismay, he wasn’t. From the moment his paddle went up, it became clear he had no intention of losing.
“Going once… Going twice…”
Aurora clenched her fists. There was no way she could let him win. She stepped forward, ready to intervene, but before she could speak, the auctioneer’s gavel struck the podium.
“Sold to Mr. Xander Alucard!”
The room erupted in applause, but Aurora felt her stomach drop. She turned to find Xanderwatching her with a knowing look.
“Better luck next time,” he said, his voice low.
Frustration bubbled inside her, but she forced a smile. “Careful, Mr. Alucard. Some treasures come with curses.”
His gaze darkened, and for a brief moment, she thought she saw something flicker in his eyes… something sinister or it was only her imagination.
“Perhaps,” he said quietly. “But some curses are worth the risk.”
As he walked away, Aurora ’s determination solidified. She didn’t trust him, but one way or another, she woul
d uncover the amulet’s secrets....and the ones he was hiding, too.
