The Unseen Path

The key felt heavier in Aurora 's hand than she’d expected. It seemed to pulse with a life of its own, its smooth surface felt cold against her skin. She couldn’t understand what had just happened—or why Xander had given her this strange object. His words lingered in her mind, taunting her like a puzzle she was desperate to solve. “A gesture of trust. Or perhaps a test. The choice is yours.” She glanced around the empty corridor, the sounds of the auction fading behind her. Evie’s voice crackled in her earpiece again, this time sounding more urgent. “Aurora , you there? What did Alucard want? Spill.” Aurora hesitated, then spoke into the earpiece, lowering her voice. “I’ve got something. A key.” “A key? Like, a literal one? Are you sure you’re not about to stumble into a trap?” Aurora ’s lips curled into a faint smile despite herself. “I’m not that reckless. I think this might be a way into something… bigger Evie.” She was halfway down the hallway when her gaze landed on a door at the far end. It was small, as if it was hidden behind a pair of thick velvet curtains. She approached it cautiously, the weight of the key in her hand growing heavier with each step she takes, her finger tightened around it. The door wasn’t locked to her surprise. The key slipped into the brass keyhole with ease, and when she turned it, the door creaked open, revealing a dimly lit staircase descending into darkness and almost nowhere in particular. A chill ran down her spine, but she pushed it aside. This was what she had been searching for. Evie’s voice crackled again, sounding closer now. “Aurora, you’re not seriously going down there, are you?” “I don’t have a choice,” Aurora replied, stepping into the shadows. “I’ll be carefu I promise. Call you in five.” As she descended the staircase, the air grew colder, the silence more suffocating. Each step echoed in the stillness, but Aurora ’s resolve only grew stronger. She had to know what Xander was hiding. The amulet, the key—there was something more beneath the surface, something dangerous, and she was determined to find it. At the bottom of the stairs, she reached a heavy, iron door. The key turned again, and the door opened with a groan. Behind it, an underground chamber stretched out before her. The walls were lined with shelves, each stacked with ancient relics, artifacts, and ancient scrolls. It looked like a private museum, but the items on display were more than just historical curiosities. There was an unmistakable aura of power, misery and history in the air and a faint smell of magic. Aurora stepped inside the room, her breath catching in her throat as she scanned the collection. This was no ordinary private collection. These objects—jewels, symbols, and even small statues—were embedded with something ancient, something that felt alive. “Impressive, isn’t it?” Aurora spun around to find Xander standing in the doorway, his figure bathed in the dim light spilling from the staircase behind him. His expression was unreadable, but there was an undeniable tension in his posture. “You knew I’d come down here.” It wasn’t a question. “I had a feeling,” Xander said, his voice low and dominating. He stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the artifacts as though they were old friends. “You’re persistent, I must say.” Aurora narrowed her eyes. “What is this place, what are those.?” Xander didn’t answer. Instead, he moved past her, his fingers grazing the edge of a glass display case. “This is where the world’s true history is kept hidden,” he said, his voice tinged with a strange reverence. “And where the past meets the future.” Aurora couldn’t tear her eyes away from the objects around her. She recognized some of them—pieces she had studied in books. But there was something unsettling about them now that they were all in one place, as if their combined presence created an unseen force in the room. “What’s the connection between these objects and the amulet?” she asked. Xander glanced at her, his eyes dark. “The amulet is part of something much bigger. A legacy that dates back to centuries.” He paused, then added, “ You see, it’s not just a relic as presumed. It’s a key to a power that’s been sealed away for generations.” Aurora felt a chill at his words as goosebumps grazed her skin. “Power?” she questioned. “What kind of power could that be?” Xander's lips pressed into a thin line. “The kind that can change the world. Or destroy it.” Her heart skipped a beat. This was what she had feared. A force tied to her parents’ deaths. She hadn’t just been looking for answers about their deaths; she had been chasing something far more dangerous than she had ever imagined she could handle. “Why are you showing me this?” Aurora asked, her voice barely a whisper. Xander turned to face her fully, his gaze intense and intimidating. “Because, you’ve already stepped into this world subconsciously. And now that you’re here, there’s no turning back.” The weight of his words hung heavy in the air. Aurora swallowed hard, the reality of the situation crashing down on her without proper preparation of what's to come. She wasn’t just on the trail of an artifact anymore. She had walked into something far darker, and she wasn’t sure if she could escape it. But one thing was certain, Xander Alucard knew far more than he was letting on, and whether she liked it or not, she was now tangled in whatever web he was weaving. Her pulse quickened, but she stood her ground. “So what do you want me to do? What's mine with all these? What’s the next step?" Xander studied her for a long moment without saying anything after she stopped questioning, then gave a small nod. “The next step,” he said quietly, “is to find out who else is looking for the amulet.”
