The figure took another slow step into the room.
Seraphina's fingers tightened around her phone.
"Who are you?" she demanded, forcing her voice to stay steady.
The stranger remained silent.
A black hood concealed the person's face, and leather gloves covered both hands.
Fear gripped her chest.
She opened her mouth to scream.
Before a sound could escape, the stranger lunged.
Seraphina stumbled backward just as the bedroom light flicked on.
"Caspian!"
The stranger spun around.
In the doorway stood Caspian, his expression colder than ice.
For one heartbeat, no one moved.
Then chaos erupted.
The intruder charged at Caspian with a knife flashing under the light.
Seraphina gasped.
"Caspian, watch out!"
He caught the attacker's wrist with frightening speed.
The knife stopped inches from his chest.
The stranger twisted violently, trying to break free.
Caspian drove his elbow into the attacker's ribs.
A muffled grunt escaped beneath the hood.
The knife clattered onto the floor.
The intruder shoved Caspian backward and sprinted toward the living room.
"Don't let him escape!" Seraphina cried.
Caspian was already moving.
He chased the stranger through the apartment.
The front door slammed open.
By the time Caspian reached the hallway, the intruder had disappeared.
Only silence remained.
A few seconds later, Dorian rushed out of the elevator with two security guards behind him.
"What happened?" Dorian asked.
"He was inside the apartment," Caspian replied.
"Did you see his face?"
"No."
Dorian cursed under his breath.
"The security cameras are still offline."
Caspian's jaw tightened.
"Search every floor."
The guards scattered immediately.
Caspian returned to the apartment.
Seraphina was still standing in her bedroom, trembling.
She hadn't realized tears had formed until one rolled down her cheek.
He stopped in front of her.
"Are you hurt?"
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
His eyes scanned her carefully anyway.
Only after confirming she was unharmed did he finally exhale.
"He came into my room," she whispered.
"I know."
"He could have killed me."
"He didn't."
"But he tried."
Caspian looked at the knife lying on the bedroom floor.
"No," he said quietly.
"He wasn't trying to kill you."
She frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"If he wanted you dead, he had plenty of opportunities."
Her stomach twisted.
"Then why was he here?"
Caspian didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he bent down and picked up something from beside the bed.
A small silver object.
"What is that?" she asked.
He held it beneath the light.
It was a tiny pendant shaped like a phoenix.
Her heart skipped a beat.
"I've seen that before."
Caspian looked at her sharply.
"Where?"
She frowned, trying to remember.
"My father had one exactly like it."
The color drained from Caspian's face.
"Are you certain?"
"Yes."
His grip tightened around the pendant.
"That's impossible."
"Why?"
He stared at the symbol as though it had awakened a ghost.
"Because every member of the Phoenix Circle disappeared twenty years ago."
"The Phoenix Circle?"
"They were the most powerful secret organization in the country."
Seraphina's breathing quickened.
"And my father belonged to them?"
Caspian met her eyes.
"I was hoping he didn't."
A heavy silence filled the room.
For the first time, Seraphina realized her father's disappearance might not have been an accident.
It might have been the beginning of something far darker.
Somewhere outside the apartment, hidden in the shadows across the street, the masked intruder watched the lights through a pair of binoculars.
He pulled out his phone.
"They found the pendant," he said quietly.
A deep voice answered from the other end.
"Good."
"What now?"
The voice chuckled.
"Now... they start asking the right questions."
The call ended.
The masked man looked up at Seraphina's window one last time.
"The game has finally begun."
