With a jolt, he realized he was suspended several inches off the ground, his arms extended upwards, wrists bound tightly to the blades of the fan. Panic surged through him as he tested his restraints. “Help! Someone help me!” he screamed, his voice echoing off the chipped, beige walls. The two men standing in the middle of the room remained entirely unfazed by his cries. They were dressed in identical dark suits, their expressions blank and devoid of emotion, as if they had been programmed to ignore the chaos unfolding before them. With their arms casually crossed, they simply watched Joe, their stance rigid and immovable, much like malfunctioning mannequins. “Why are you doing this?” Joe gasped, the struggle to breathe amplifying his terror. “What do you want from me?” One of the men shifted slightly, tilting his head as if contemplating the nature of his response. “We don’t need anything from you, Joe,” he spoke in a smooth, clipped tone that was unsettling in its calmness. “Your presence here is merely a means to an end.” “What does that even mean? Let me down!” Joe writhed, the fan creaking ominously as he shifted his weight. The sensation of vertigo washed over him, and he squeezed his eyes shut to regain his focus. Their faces were obscured by shadow, but in the dim light, Joe could see how eerily still they were. Instead of reacting to his pleas, they remained fixated on an unseen point in the corner of the room, an unwavering focus that deepened Joe’s dread. “Is this some kind of joke?” he shouted, the panic in his voice rising. “You can’t just keep me here! People will notice!” The second man, slightly taller than the first, spoke without looking at Joe. “It’s not a joke. We are quite serious.” His voice was monotonous,. “In the next few hours, people will forget you ever existed.” Joe’s heart raced. “No, no! You don’t have to do this! I have a life, I have friends! I have a wife!” “Friends can be inconvenient but wife? You already broke her,” the first man remarked, now stepping closer to Joe. He leaned in, his expression still unreadable. “Nothing personal, but you’re in our master way.” Joe felt the desperate need to negotiate, to find any sliver of leverage just for them to release him. “What do you want? Money? I can pay you! Just untie me!” The taller man chuckled, the sound devoid of humor. “We don’t need your money.” He lifted a finger, pointing to the fan. “Though, if you stop struggling, this will be over much quicker.” As the words sank in, so did the reality of his situation. Joe glanced at the surrounding walls, each scuff and crack like a countdown to his fate. “You can’t just do this!” “Can’t we?” The first man regarded him coolly, an unsettling smile breaking his stone-like demeanor. “In a world where power is everything, we can do whatever we choose. Right now, your fear is our entertainment.” Rage ignited within Joe. “You think this is entertaining? You’re sick!” The two men straightened, their indifference returning. “Your anger only makes this more amusing,” the second man replied, unfazed by the fire in Joe’s voice. A wave of cold sweat dripped down Joe’s forehead. He could feel the fans’ movements pulling at his wrists, threatening to gouge more of his skin with each swing. “What about the police? They’ll come looking for me!” “Only if they remember you,” the first man said. He turned and walked toward the small table in the corner, picking up a glass of water. He took a slow sip, as if savoring the moment. “We can erase all traces of your existence, Joe,” the second man chimed in, as if reciting a script. “No one will think twice about a missing man. There are many like you.” Joe’s mind raced; he felt trapped between despair and defiance. “You’re both just pawns, aren’t you? Someone’s paying you to do this!, your are sent by my wife!!” Both men blinked slowly, their attention returning to him, eyes devoid of emotion. “It doesn’t matter,” the first man replied, his tone blank. “You’re wrong!” Joe shouted, feeling a surge of adrenaline. “You don’t have to be like this! You can choose!” A silence enveloped the room, thick and suffocating. Joe’s heart pounded in his chest as he swayed lightly from the fan’s rotation. “Sometimes the choice is made for us,” the taller man said slowly, almost distantly. “Stop talking in riddles!” Joe screamed, desperation bubbling within him. “You can still walk out of here! You can let me go!” Suddenly, the first man turned sharply, his hand forming into a fist. “You’re not worth it, Joe. We have our orders, and this is where you fit in.” At that, Joe felt the weight of hopelessness settle back over him. His resolve began to crumble. “Please… I don’t want to die…” The first man merely smirked, leaning against the wall as if this were all just a casual event in an otherwise uneventful day. “You’re not going to die. Not yet, anyway.” As the seconds turned into what felt like hours, Joe squirmed again, adrenaline heightening his senses. He could hear them breathing, the whisper of their suits against each other, the fan spinning overhead. “Why are you doing this?” he whispered this time, the fight leaving his voice. “Because we can,” the second man replied flatly. “You can scream, you can beg, but it won’t change a thing.” Joe felt his spirit fade, the reality of his situation closing in like a vice. The two men remained, steadfast and detached, as the fan continued its relentless whirr, the only sound accompanying his fading hope. ---
