Chapter 11: She's Gone

2541 Words
"What the hell was that about?" I shouted at Sherlock as we walked out of a home of a suspect on a case we were working on. The interview went terrible and it was all because of Sherlock. She kicked us out for the way Sherlock acted and if I was in her shoes, I would have too. He had no sympathy for anyone and if he did have sympathy, he chose not to show it. It bothered me that he had no people skills. "She will probably never talk to us again." Christmas is was long and past. New Years went by and it was uneventful. I didn't even stay up till midnight. It was now the first month of the new year and there were murders to solve. Our list was over flowing with cases and we would be booked all week long. Since the Christmas party I had heard no word from Zane, and my fear had shrunk. I knew Zane and he was not one for waiting around, if he hadn't attacked by now, he wasn't going to. "That's fine, I got what I needed from her. And you know you did too. That box, you've seen something like that before." He said as he pulled out his phone to send a message to someone. He was right, but I didn't want to tell him that. I had seen a box like that before because I had one like that. I used to hold money and personal items in it. I got it as a gift from black market dealer I worked for but it had to be over a year since I saw that box. That box was lost, like most of my other things. Before I could deny it Sherlock spoke up. "Come on Anderson, as much as you want to deny it you were white collar, of course you had a little trinket box that you kept little things you stole off of people." I felt anger flare through me. He was never going to see me more than just a white collar thief. "What are you saying Holmes? That she is a white collar thief just like me?" I snapped at him and stopped in mid walk. "You think you know everything about white collar people but everyone of those people are different and have a reason for doing what they did. You think you know everything about me but you are wrong. You will never know me. I can't stand you Sherlock." by the end I was yelling at him. I stood there in silence for a minute waiting for what he would say back to me but he stayed quiet. Instead he turned around from me and started walking again. I was going to explode at him, I was expecting a fight but I wasn't going to get it from him. "Fine! Be that way! I'm taking the Tube! Don't wait up!" After I shouted, he spoke up in his deep voice he asked, "then why did you do it?" For the first time since I had stayed with him, he asked me a personal question, not like a question that he already knew that answer to but something that he really didn't know. He turned to face me again and I could see in his eyes that he wanted to understand, but I wasn't sure if I was ready to tell. There were a lot of motives for me doing what I did in the past but mainly it was because I needed to live. It was a way of getting money and I was good at it. I looked at the ground quickly after he said that to hide my face. "I'm going to take the Tube." I said quickly and ran off the other way. It had been a long day and I was worn out. When we started started before the sun was even up. Now the sun was almost gone behind the horizon. There wasn't many people out now and if they were they were at the pubs drinking the night away. I liked the quiet that the night gave, it was relaxing. I heard something behind me and looked back quickly to see one over sized man and one little women walking hand in hand, laughing loudly as they watch a*****e merchant run after some red apples rolling down the other way. I made a face at them. Why did people have to be so rude all the time? I walked down the same road for another couple minutes more then took another turn down a deserted road, I knew this area like the back of my hand. There was a short cut to the nearest tube and quicken my pace. I wanted to be home before Holmes. I didn't want to face him when I walked in. I didn't want him to ask more questions. I just wanted peace. I heard steps from behind me and I looked back to see the same couple walking down the same road. I frowned. Not many people took this way and it couldn't be a coincidence. I looked back at them and met eye contact. Just then I knew what they were here for. I made a lot of enemies in my life. Chances where high that they were here for me to get some kind of pay back for what I did to them or their boss. In the split second I broke in a dead sprint, so fast I kicked off one of my lucky shoes. I frowned as I knew that I didn't have time to go back for it. I felt my sock get soaked as I kept on running down the wet road. I ran until the road emptied out into another deserted small back cobble street. I stepped into countless puddles, not paying attention to where I was stepping, soaking my socks and my one shoe. My feet stung from the cold road and water but I pushed onward. I looked back behind me again to see that only the burly looking man was chasing me and was gaining speed. I needed to get to a place with lots of people. When there I could blend in and get away safely. That would be the only chance I had to get out of this. I could feel the adrenaline coarse though me. I hadn't had this feeling in a long time, it made me feel alive. I could feel my lungs burning as I pushed harder and faster. I could almost see the end of the small road I was on and I knew that this road emptied out to a busy shopping area. I forced myself to quicken the pace. I almost made it out of this. Just then the women dropped down from a roof about 30 yards ahead of me. "Give it up Rori." The women said with a grin on her face, knowing full well she had me where she wanted. I was too close to give up. "Don't think so!" I said as I ran straight for her. I was planning to charge but just as I was about 15 yards away I felt someone grab the back of my red pea coat, I slipped it off with no problem and tried to keep running but something grabbed my leg and caused me to fall on my face. Even through the painful fall, I couldn't stop now. I pushed myself up from the ground as I tasted blood in my mouth. The man grabbed me from behind, putting his strong arms around me like bars. "Next time, maybe". As the woman came up to me she held out a white cloth that I could smell from a few yards away. Chloroform. I struggled to free myself but with no luck as she held the chloroform to my mouth and nose. It smelt horrible. I tried to kick and shake them lose but within seconds I could feel myself slipping away until I was completely gone. "Wake up" Someone said in a sing song voice. I snapped opened my eyes and looked around to where I was at. Everything was fuzzy and slowly came into focus as I remembered what happened. They took me. I looked at my hands and feet and saw that they were tied to a chair. Typical. But what scared me the most was in front of my eyes. There standing with a grin was man that was about late 20's early 30's with brown hair. I recognized him instantly as fear took over me. Out of every person I made an enemy with he was the one that scared me the most. He smiled wider when he realized how terrified I was. "I missed you Rori." He said. He got up from his seat and pulled out a cell phone that I realized was mine. "Smile" he said as he took a photo of me. "Oh that's a keeper. The bloody lip adds so much to the photo." "Let me go Zane." I spat at him. He shook he head at me as he laughed. "Where would the fun be in that? See I thought I wouldn't see my play mate for years, I was overjoyed to see you out in the streets again. And with the Bobbies? Who knew that you, Rori Anderson, would be working for them? I'm still geeking out about it." he said with a huge smile on his face. "Then you know the cops will be looking for me." I said. There was only so long I could be gone for until they started. He had to let me go or he would be caught. After all, I did have a tracker on my ankle. I looked down at my shoeless foot and saw no tracker on me. Zane took it off and it would take the police years to find me now. I felt my heart race in my chest, I could only save myself. He raised his eye brows in excitement. "Oh I want them too. See I thought you were the only fun thing to toy with. You were the only brilliant white collar criminal in Ireland but Mr. Holmes was under my nose and I didn't even know it. Now he, he is something special Rori. I think I will have a bit of fun with him and you." "Don't you have anything else to do?" I snapped at him. "No, see you'll always be my favorite." He said and caressed my cheek which made me shutter. He then got up from his chair and said, "Let's see where this all goes to. Just hang tight. No pun intended." He gave a chuckle then walked out of the room leaving me alone in what looked like a large library. "I'm going to be in so much trouble." I said out loud as I looked around. I felt that my socks were still wet and knew I was not out for long. I must be close to where I got caught. However, there were no windows in this room and I had no idea what time it was. I needed to get out of here. There was no use trying to figure out where I was. I just had to escape. Zane wasn't one to be messed with and the longer I was with him, the more danger he could cause. I started wiggling out of the ropes that held my hands. I felt the rope dig in and pull at my skin but I pushed the pain to the back of my mind. I had to get out no matter what the cost. After about 30 minutes of wiggling I started to feel my hands start to slip out of the rope. I smiled to myself as I looked at my reddened and slightly bleeding wrists. "Not this time Zane." Another 10 minutes went by and I was able to get my hands free completely and from the chair and after that it was a matter of seconds to get my wet feet free. I got up and looked for the door out. The door was across the room, large and almost intimidating. I started to walk towards it but stopped. He was waiting for me to do this. Why did he make it so easy for me to get out of the chair? What was his plan? I didn't want to fall into his plan but I didn't want to stay. I figured that I could handle whatever he had planned on the other side of that door. I stopped at the huge wooden door and took a deep breath. Here went nothing. I clasped onto the brass handle and turned it then walked through to the other side. On the other side was an huge empty hall way. I started to run down to the hall that was to the left of me. I ran for a few minutes expecting an alarm to sound but nothing happened. At the end of the hall way was a grand stair case. I took a step forward on the step and all of a sudden the lights went off and a deafening beeping sound rang through the hall. This was what I was expecting. I covered my ears and started to run down the steps as fast as I could. As I put my feet on the landing something grabbed a hold of my arm. I spun around and saw the same man that brought me here was holding me. He was a large slow but powerful man and I had to be careful in what I did next. I wiggled out of his grip and spun around to try and kick his head but he grabbed my ankle and gave it a quick and sharp twist. I felt a pop in my ankle and clasped to the ground with a scream. He dropped my foot and kicked me in my stomach. I coughed as I spit blood out of my mouth. I struggled to stand with no use. My hopes for escape were over. He had the upper hand over me and I didn't know what to do. The large man picked me up and draped me over his shoulder. I felt my ribs shift under his shoulder and frowned, I had to have cracked them. I yelled at him, "put me down" as I pounded on his back. He did not react as he carried me to another room with white walls and nice pictures hanging up around me. It was a gallery. What kind of place was this? A museum? A house? After about 30 minutes of me just standing around Zane came in with a huge grin on his face. He was clearly enjoying every minute of this. "You're cute when you're mad." He said. "Shut it." I snapped at him. "Oh Rori, why do you make this easier for me?" "Why do you have to be such a creep?" I retorted. He let out a chuckle then said, "well, we should give him a call, shouldn't we?"
