The door was open, just a crack, but it was open. Maybe it was Gertrude! Maybe he’d just been hiding in there all along! He stepped up to it, leaning toward the crack. “Gertrude?” Something shifted inside. A brief, hushing noise. It was completely dark inside. He squatted down, pushed his eye into the crack, thinking he may be able to see something, anything at all, even a shadow. Nothing. He glanced back down the passage. He didn’t have any time.
