Chapter twelve

Summer "Who are the Marcini brothers, and what did I do to them?" I asked. "Well, they are the leaders of an Italian mafia organization," Amelia explained. "They're ruthless and don't forgive anyone. A few months ago, you scammed them, and they've been hunting you ever since." I rubbed my hand over my face, silently regretting everything I had done today. Maybe I should have been nicer to Ethan. If the Marcini brothers ever found their way here, this family wouldn't hesitate to throw me out of the estate to save themselves. "I don't think the king is going to protect me," I said quietly. "Elena, I'm begging you. Do whatever you have to do to make sure he doesn't hand you over to those men," she said. "If you have to seduce him, if you have to sleep with him, then do it. You can't even begin to imagine what the Marcini brothers would do to you." Even through the phone, I could hear the fear and panic in her voice. If these brothers were really that dangerous, what could Elena possibly have been thinking when she decided to scam them? Before I could say another word, the bedroom door suddenly opened. I quickly ended the call. Ethan walked into the room and headed straight toward me. He was dressed in a simple black T-shirt and a pair of gray tracksuit pants. His dark hair was slightly messy, and beads of sweat covered his forehead and neck, making it obvious that he had just finished an intense workout. His shirt clung to his body, outlining every hard muscle underneath. Even after what looked like a long session at the gym, he somehow still managed to look unbelievably handsome. I couldn't stop my eyes from wandering over him. My gaze slowly traveled down his broad shoulders, across his strong arms, over his hard chest, and to his well-built body. There was no point denying it anymore. Ethan was the most attractive man I had ever laid eyes on. Without realizing it, I bit my lower lip while staring at him. He suddenly cleared his throat. The sound snapped me back to reality, and I immediately looked away, feeling my face grow warm with embarrassment. What on earth was wrong with me? I had never had thoughts like this before. My innocent mind had never wandered in such a direction, so why was I suddenly checking out a man like some lovesick teenager? It had to be because of this strange body I was trapped in. There was no other explanation. Trying to compose myself, I straightened my posture and forced my expression to remain calm. Ethan stopped right in front of me. "I guess your stay in my palace comes to an end tomorrow." He said as he dipped his hands into his pockets. "Your boyfriend reached out, he said he has been searching everywhere for you before he got information that you are here in my palace, he said he would be coming with his brother to take you back home tomorrow, I will suggest you start packing your things." He said. The moment the words left his mouth, I shot up from the bed. Panic instantly washed over me. I hurried toward him without thinking, but the second I moved, Ethan instinctively stepped backward as if I were carrying some contagious disease. The movement made me stop in my tracks. I stared at him for a brief moment before pushing that thought aside. Right now, I had far more important things to worry about. "Please, you can't release me to them, I do not know who or who is not my relative. I do not remember anyone." I said immediately. "This guy claims to be your man. He even sent a picture of both of you at a club, and you expect me not to believe him? Is there something you are hoping to gain by coming here? I have already offered you money." He said. I nodded slowly. "I know, but I do not want money. Amelia said these guys are after my life, and if they find me, they are going to kill me. Please do not let them take me away." I pleaded. Instead of showing even a little sympathy, his expression only hardened. "I do not care. You are not my responsibility. I can't stand you, no one here can stand you. Go back to wherever you crawled out from, you leech." He spat angrily. His words stung more than I wanted to admit. Under normal circumstances, I would have fired back with something equally insulting. My life was on the line, I forced myself to swallow my pride along with every sharp response that tried to escape my mouth. "I beg you, please. I promise to behave from now on. I will make myself invisible until I get my memory back." I said. Without saying another word, Ethan turned and walked toward the bedside drawer. He pulled it open, took out a checkbook and a pen, then slammed them onto the top of the drawer with enough force to make me jump. "That's a blank check. Write whatever amount you need, and I will have it deposited into your account." He said before turning toward the door. "You leave this estate tomorrow." Without waiting for my response, he walked out of the room. The sound of the door closing behind him echoed through the silent room. I remained standing there for several seconds before my legs finally gave out beneath me, and I slowly sat back on the bed. My mind was completely blank. Everything was happening too fast. That night, sleep completely abandoned me. I tossed and turned from one side of the bed to the other, desperately trying to think of a way out of this mess. Every plan I came up with had one flaw after another until I eventually ran out of ideas. There was no escape, as the night dragged on, fear slowly tightened its grip around my heart. By the time the first rays of sunlight filtered through the curtains, reality finally settled in. I was going to leave this palace without getting my revenge. Worse still, I was probably walking straight into my own death. As if my anxiety wasn't already bad enough, Amelia made it even worse that morning. She sent me several pictures of people who had supposedly been tortured and murdered by the Marcini brothers. The images were horrifying. There was blood everywhere. Their bodies had been brutally mutilated, and the sight alone made my stomach twist. I immediately deleted every single picture, but the disturbing images had already burned themselves into my mind. I kept expecting Ethan to return to the room that morning, hoping he had changed his mind. But he never came. The hours passed slowly while I remained locked inside the bedroom, too afraid to leave and too restless to stay still. By midday, my empty stomach finally won the battle. The hunger became impossible to ignore. After taking a deep breath, I cautiously left the room and headed downstairs, planning to grab something from the kitchen before quietly returning upstairs. The mansion was unusually quiet, I carefully made my way down the staircase, hoping not to run into anyone. The moment my feet touched the last step, a familiar voice broke the silence. "Oh, she is here." Fiona's voice said. My heart immediately skipped a beat. I slowly turned toward the living room. Fiona and Tamara were seated on one of the sofas. Across from them sat two heavily built men. They looked rough, intimidating, and anything but decent. Just looking at them sent a wave of uneasiness through me. Before I could ask what was happening, Fiona looked directly at me. "Your fiancé is here to take you home." Fiona said.
