Chapter Eleven

917 Words
Summer Every head in the dining room turned in Grace's direction the moment she walked in. My eyes widened, and before I could stop myself, I called out her name with excitement. Grace froze in the middle of her steps. She looked at me with clear surprise, obviously caught off guard by my reaction. Fiona's eyes moved from me to Grace, her expression full of suspicion. "Do you two know each other?" Fiona asked Grace, her tone making it sound like simply knowing me was some kind of offense. I had made another mistake, I my excitement, I had forgotten who I was supposed to be. I wasn't Summer anymore , I was Elena. Grace held my gaze for a brief moment before answering. "No, I have never met her," she said, giving me a cold, piercing look. I quickly cleared my throat, trying to cover up my mistake. "Sorry. She just looks like someone I know," I said. Fiona slowly rose from her seat, her face filled with disgust. "I've lost my appetite. I can't sit at the same table as a peasant like her without feeling sick," she said. She turned to one of the servants. "Bring my food to my room. I'd rather eat upstairs." With that, she walked away without looking back. One after another, everyone else stood from their seats and followed her out of the dining room. Before long, only Ethan remained seated, I turned my attention to him. "Aren't you leaving too? Or does eating with peasants not disgust you the way it disgusts them?" I asked. He didn't respond. Instead, he gestured for Grace to serve him another plate of food. She quietly walked over and placed another serving in front of him. Neither of us said another word as we ate in silence. The only sounds in the dining room were the clinking of cutlery against the plates. He finished eating before I did. Without saying a single word, he stood up from his chair and walked away from the table. I was left sitting there alone, my eyes wandered over the table, taking in the different dishes spread across it. There was so much food, back when I lived in this house, I had never been served a meal like this. The same went for my sisters, we had been treated worse than animals. Seeing all this food in front of me made my chest tighten. I slowly tasted every dish I had never had the chance to try before. One after another, I sampled them until I was finally full. Grace walked back into the dining room. The moment I looked at her, I noticed the hostility on her face. Even though I smiled at her, she only looked back at me with obvious hatred and disgust. "I'm really sorry about what happened earlier. You look so much like one of my aunts. Her name is Grace," I said with a small smile. "Is your name Grace too? I heard the Luna call you that earlier," I added, trying to make small conversation and help her feel more comfortable around me. She stared at me with complete contempt. "I do not associate with ghetto and gutter rats who don't know their place in the order of this world," she said coldly. "The only reason you've been shown any mercy is because you claim to have amnesia. If you continue crossing your boundaries, you'll be dead before you ever get the chance to tell anyone about this place," she snarled. I could only stare at her in shock. I had never heard such cruel words come from her mouth before. The Grace I knew had always been kind and comforting. Could my death really have changed her this much? I swallowed hard. "Listen, I'm not here—" She didn't let me finish before cutting me off. "If you value your life, you'd crawl back to wherever you came from before it's too late," she said before turning around and walking away. I stood there for a few seconds, staring after her, still trying to process everything she had just said. Then I slowly made my way back to Ethan's room. I expected him to be there since I had seen him head in this direction after leaving the dining room earlier. But when I got inside, the room was empty. I decided to get ready for the night. Just as I was about to lie down, Elena's phone suddenly rang. I picked it up and saw Amelia's name on the screen. I answered the call immediately. "It's nice to know you are still alive," she said as soon as the call connected. "I thought the palace had swallowed you whole, just like the rumors said." I rolled my eyes. "I actually called because I found out something," she continued. "The Marcini brothers came to the club looking for you. They have been asking people if anyone knows where you are." I slowly closed my eyes. One of the worst parts of inheriting this body was inheriting Elena's enemies along with it. And on top of that, I was expected to deal with all the debts she had left behind. "I think you should talk to the king and ask him to protect you," she said. "It looks like they already have an idea of where you are, and I know for a fact that the moment they see you, they will kill you on the spot."
