THE FOLDER

2104 Words
Selena slid the folder across the table. Her hands were steady, but her eyes betrayed something—fear, maybe, or guilt. Caleb stared at the manila envelope. It was thick, heavy, the kind that held documents that could change lives. "What is this?" "Open it." Selena's voice was quiet. "And try not to hate me." Caleb hesitated. Then he opened the folder. The first page was a contract. Pierce International's logo was at the top. The language was dense, legal, designed to confuse anyone who wasn't a lawyer. But Caleb had spent years reading contracts. He knew how to find the important parts. His eyes moved down the page. And then they stopped. The document was a nondisclosure agreement. Signed by Selena Rhodes. Dated three years ago. Caleb looked up at her. "You knew. You knew about the concrete. You knew about the formula." Selena didn't meet his eyes. "I knew there were concerns. I didn't know the full extent." "Bullshit." Caleb's voice was hard. "You signed an NDA. That means you knew something. That means you were part of it." "I was protecting the company. It was my job." "Your job was to protect the truth. Not to bury it." Selena finally looked at him. There were tears in her eyes, but her voice was steady. "Do you think I wanted this? Do you think I wanted to be part of a conspiracy?" She leaned forward. "I found out about the formula two years ago. I confronted Julian. He told me it was a mistake, that they were fixing it. He made me sign the NDA. He said it was standard procedure." "And you believed him?" "I believed him because I had to. Because if I didn't, I would have lost everything. My job. My reputation. My daughter." Caleb sat back. The words hit him like physical blows. Selena had been complicit. She had known about the cover-up and had done nothing. But she had also been manipulated. Trapped. Just like him. "Why are you showing me this now?" Selena took a breath. "Because Julian called me yesterday. He asked me to help him. He wanted me to bury the evidence, to make the story go away." "And what did you say?" "I said I would think about it." Selena's voice was barely a whisper. "And then I came here. To tell you the truth." Caleb stared at her. He didn't know what to feel. Anger. Betrayal. Disappointment. But underneath it all, something else. Hope. "If you help me," he said, "if you testify against Julian, we can stop this. We can save the people in those buildings." Selena shook her head. "I can't testify. If I do, I'll go to prison. Maya will lose both of her parents." "You'll lose her anyway. If the buildings collapse, thousands of people will die. Do you think she'll ever forgive you for that?" Selena was silent. The tears were flowing now, tracing lines down her perfectly made-up face. "You don't understand," she said. "I've spent my whole life building this career. It's all I have. It's all I know how to do." "Then find something else." Caleb leaned forward. "You're a good lawyer, Selena. You can start over. But you can't start over if you're dead. And you can't start over if you're complicit in murder." --- The silence stretched between them. Selena stared at the table, her hands trembling. Caleb watched her, waiting for her to make a decision. "I need time," she finally said. "I need to think about this." "We don't have time. The Apex opens in eight days." "I know." Selena stood up. "But I can't make this decision right now. I need to think about Maya. About what's best for her." Caleb stood too. "What's best for Maya is having a mother who isn't in prison. Or a mother who isn't dead because she helped kill thousands of people." Selena's face went pale. "That's not fair." "Fair? None of this is fair." Caleb felt the anger rising. "I didn't ask for any of this. I just wanted to do my job. I wanted to keep people safe. And now I'm running for my life, my daughter is scared, and my ex-wife is trying to decide whether to help the people who are trying to kill me." Selena looked at him. For a moment, she seemed like the woman he had married—the woman who had believed in justice, who had wanted to make the world better. "I'll do it," she said. "I'll help you. But I need something in return." "What?" "I need you to protect Maya. No matter what happens. I need you to make sure she's safe." Caleb nodded. "I will. I swear it." Selena picked up her bag. "I'll be in touch. There's something else I need to show you, but I can't do it here. Not yet." She walked out of the coffee shop, leaving Caleb alone with the folder. He stared at the NDA, his mind racing. Selena had been part of the cover-up. She had signed the document, had kept the secret. But she had also come to him. She had chosen to tell the truth. It was a start. But it wasn't enough. --- Caleb left the coffee shop, the folder tucked under his arm. He walked quickly, keeping to the crowded streets, his eyes scanning for anyone who might be following. His phone buzzed. Cross. "Where are you?" "Just left the meeting with Selena. I need to get back to the warehouse." "I'll pick you up. Stay where you are." Cross arrived ten minutes later, pulling up to the curb in his nondescript sedan. "Get in," he said. "And tell me everything." Caleb slid into the passenger seat. "Selena knew about the concrete. She signed an NDA three years ago. She's been protecting Pierce the whole time." Cross's expression was grim. "Can we use her?" "She's willing to testify. But she wants protection for Maya." "That's doable." Cross pulled away from the curb. "What else did she say?" "She said there's something else she needs to show me. Something she couldn't tell me at the coffee shop." Cross was silent for a moment. "That could be a trap." "It could be. But I don't think so." "Why not?" Caleb thought about it. "Because she looked scared. More scared than I've ever seen her. She's not playing games. She's genuinely terrified." Cross nodded slowly. "Okay. We'll play it her way. But we need to be careful." --- They arrived at the warehouse to find Clara waiting outside, her laptop open on a crate. "We have a problem," she said. "Julian Blackwood just held a press conference." Caleb's heart sank. "What did he say?" "He denied everything, of course. But it's worse than that." Clara turned the laptop around. "He's blaming you." The screen showed a clip of Julian standing behind a podium, his expression stern, his voice measured. "Mr. Rhodes is a disgruntled employee," Julian said. "He was passed over for a promotion and has been trying to destroy this company ever since. The allegations he's made are baseless, and we intend to prove that in court." Caleb stared at the screen. The words were lies, every single one of them. But they were being broadcast to millions of people. "He's good," Cross said. "I'll give him that." "Good at lying," Caleb said. "Same thing, in this world." Cross turned to Clara. "Can we fight this?" "Not directly. Not without more evidence." Clara closed her laptop. "But we have another option. We have the video of Julian threatening Santos. If we release that, it'll destroy his credibility." "Then let's release it." "Not yet. We need to hold onto it until the right moment." Clara's voice was firm. "If we release it now, Julian will have time to recover. We need to wait until he's already losing, and then we hit him with everything we have." Caleb nodded. "How long?" "A few days. Maybe less." Clara looked at him. "Can you hold on that long?" Caleb thought about it. The Apex was still scheduled to open. Maya was still in danger. And Julian Blackwood was still in power. "I don't have a choice," he said. "I have to hold on." --- The next few days were a blur of activity. Clara worked tirelessly, organizing the evidence, preparing for the final release. Cross coordinated security, making sure Caleb and Maya were protected. And Caleb worked on the simulation, refining the data, making sure it was irrefutable. But through it all, he couldn't stop thinking about Selena. She had promised to testify. She had promised to help. But she hadn't called. Caleb tried to reach her, but his calls went straight to voicemail. He texted her, but she didn't respond. And then, on the third day, he received a message from an unknown number. "Selena is in danger. They know she met with you. They're watching her." Caleb felt his blood run cold. "Who is this?" "The same person who left the door unlocked. The same person who's been watching over you. Selena needs your help. Now." Caleb stood up, his heart pounding. He grabbed his jacket and ran for the door. --- The address the texter sent was a house on the outskirts of the city, a quiet suburban street where nothing ever happened. Caleb arrived to find Selena's car parked in the driveway. The house was dark, the curtains drawn. He walked to the front door, his hand on the knife in his pocket. He knocked. No answer. He knocked again. Louder this time. And then he heard it. A muffled sound from inside. Like someone was trying to scream. Caleb didn't hesitate. He kicked the door open. The house was a disaster. Furniture overturned, papers scattered everywhere. Signs of a struggle. And in the middle of the chaos, Selena was tied to a chair, her mouth taped shut. Caleb rushed to her, cutting the tape with his knife. "Selena, I'm here. I'm getting you out." Her eyes were wide with terror. "He's coming back. He went to get something. He said he was going to kill me." "Who? Who did this?" "Julian. Julian Blackwood. He knows I met with you. He knows I was going to testify." Caleb untied her hands, pulled her to her feet. "We have to go. Now." --- They ran to the car, Caleb's heart pounding in his ears. Selena collapsed into the passenger seat, her breathing ragged. Caleb started the engine, pulled out of the driveway. "Where are we going?" Selena asked. "Somewhere safe. Somewhere he won't find us." He drove through the night, the city lights fading behind them. He didn't stop until they reached the warehouse on the city's edge. Cross was waiting. "What happened?" "Julian found her. He's trying to kill everyone who knows the truth." Cross helped Selena inside, sat her down, gave her a blanket. Clara appeared, her expression grim. "Julian knows," Caleb said. "He knows about the evidence. He knows about Selena. He's going to come after all of us." "Then we need to move fast," Clara said. "We need to release everything. Now." --- The final release was scheduled for dawn. Caleb sat at the computer, his fingers hovering over the keyboard. The evidence was ready. The video, the documents, the testimony. Everything. "Once I push this button, there's no going back," he said. "I know." Clara's voice was soft. "Are you ready?" Caleb looked at Selena. She was pale, shaken, but determined. "Do it," she said. "End this." Caleb pressed the button. The evidence went live. --- The reaction was instantaneous. News outlets around the world picked up the story. Social media exploded with outrage. Politicians called for immediate action. Pierce International's stock plummeted to zero. And Julian Blackwood was arrested. Caleb watched the footage on the warehouse screen. Julian was being led away in handcuffs, his face a mask of cold fury. "This isn't over," he said to the reporters. "This is just the beginning." Caleb felt a chill run down his spine. Julian was right. The war was far from over. But for now, they had won. His phone buzzed. A text from the unknown number. "Good work. But Julian is just the beginning. The real enemy is still out there. Be careful." Caleb read the words, his heart pounding. The real enemy. Who was it? And what did they want? He looked at Selena, at Cross, at Clara. They were celebrating, relieved that the nightmare was over. But Caleb knew better. The nightmare was just beginning.
