Chapter 4

Stacy’s POV

Hector had dropped me off at the mall, promising me that we would meet up at Anhelo’s for lunch. I was walking around, in and out of my favourite stores as my security detail followed me inconspicuously. Hector had stated over and over that at all times I was to know where they were and they were to know my every move. I wasn’t bothered by this at all because I knew it stopped him from worrying about me considering the nature of his family’s business. I was walking out of a shop that sold journals when suddenly I saw a familiar face, I was so shocked to see Soraya right there in front of me, she looked like she had not aged one bit in the past six years. How was that even possible!

As we were talking her eyes kept shifting around like she was uncomfortable, it made me sad to think that I made her feel that way considering we used to be the bestest of friends. A few weeks after the club incident, she had become so distant. I was shocked when I called her to ask if we could meet up only for her to tell me she was on her way out of town and that she had gotten a job in New York. Plenty of times I had offered to visit her or have her fly to me in California but she always had some sort of excuse. I thought maybe she had made new friends and forgotten about me or maybe she blamed me for taking her to the club where she met the first guy she ever liked, a guy who had ended up hurting her.

“Yes, we are going to be here for two weeks, we should meet up for drinks maybe lunch and catch up. Oh my gosh how long has it been?” Oh and you will never guess who my husband is, remember Hector?” I asked and continued to tell her how we had bumped into each other. Her responses were that of an uninterested person, I guess she wasn’t as excited to see me as I was to see her. She just kept looking around.

A little voice came from behind me yelling ‘mommy’ over and over again and she went pale like she had seen a ghost. A little boy ran up to her, placed his hand in hers and at that moment everything fell into place. When he looked at me smiled I could instantly tell who his father was.

“I have to go Stacy, please don’t tell him.” She said and she took off running.

I was standing there still so shocked. That had to be Xander’s son, the resemblance between them was striking. The little boy even had his eyes! What did she mean don’t tell him?

As I was about to walk away, the boy came running, he zoomed past me and went straight for the store display window across from where his mother and I had been standing.

I walked up to him. “Hello there, how are you?” I smiled at him.

He regarded me with a strange weary look then looked back at the display window. “I’m not supposed to talk to strangers.” He said quietly.

“I’m not a stranger, I am your mom’s friend. Remember I was talking to her before she ran off with you.” I tried again.

He looked up at me and I caught my breath, it really was like looking into Xander’s eyes. This must have been why Soraya disappeared all those years ago.

“You are a stranger! I don’t know you. He said as a matter of fact. “My mommy is coming just now.” He looked towards the way he came. Suddenly he looked like he was about to panic.

“Don’t cry sweetheart, I’m sure she is coming right now. What is your name?” I asked.

“I am not crying, I’m a big boy and I’m going to big boy school soon.” He stated in irritation. He definitely had his father’s temper.

“Well that’s really amazing!”

As I said that, I heard Soraya yell out. “Kai! Kai where are you?” There was so much panic and fear on her face as she ran, her eyes scanning everywhere. He turned and waved at her and smiled, all the worry disappearing from his cute innocent face.

She pulled him into her arms and hugged him tightly. “Kai you can’t just take off running like that, you gave me such a fright honey.” Tears were running down her face.

“I’m sorry mommy, I just really wanted the robotics coding game. Can we get it now please?” He begged, giving her a puppy dog look.

Kai Eaton! when mommy says no she means no. We have somewhere to be right now so we will get it tomorrow.” She stood her ground but I could see her resolve melting as she wiped her tears.

“But we are still here now.” The boy sulked and fell onto the floor, he folded his arms in front of his chest in protest.

“Okay fine! But this is the last toy you are getting until your birthday.” She said and he jumped to his feet and hugged her.

“Maybe Aunty Stacy could get it for him as a present huh?” I interjected. She suddenly realised I was still there and she straightened up. “No thank you.”

“Why didn’t you tell me Raya?” I asked her. “I would have been there for you.” I told her.

“Listen Stacy, I was embarrassed and hurt by what happened and I didn’t know how to deal with it. Right now I just want to get the toy and get him out of here. Please I’m begging you do not tell Hector or Xander, I will tell him myself, he didn’t want any of this, he called it a one night stand and tried to give me money for taking my virginity.” She all but whispered to me so that her son would not hear us.

He didn’t, he had run into the shop and was waving at his mother from inside with the box in his hands.

“Wait, he offered you money?” That was shocking and maybe just like Xander to do something like that. “Fine I won’t tell them but you will have to soon and please let’s meet up and catch up. I missed you, I always wondered why you stopped talking to me. Now I know, I always thought I’d done something wrong to you.” I hugged her and I couldn’t help it but I started to cry. She returned my hug and kissed my cheek.

“I am so sorry.” She said. She reached out into her bag and pulled out a small paper where she wrote down her number and handed it to me. We said our goodbyes then she walked into the store.

I was still shocked, she had a child by Xander, a very ruthless man and she knew nothing about him or what he was. How would this unfold…I would not be able to tell Hector that I had seen her, I sighed.

Soraya POV

After buying the toy that Kai had begged me for, I got him out of the mall and we went back to the storage place to wait for the truck. Seeing Stacy had thrown me off, and now I really would not be able to hide Kai from Xander anymore. I sighed as I looked at Kai eating a cheese burger that I had bought for him before we left the mall. He looked so adorable with some sauce smeared on his lips and chin. Instinctively I reached forward with a paper napkin and wiped his chin.

“Mooom” he complained and I laughed.

“I was just wiping your face honey.” I explained.

“Im a big boy going to big boy school now, I can do it myself.” He said proudly making me smile.

The truck eventually pulled in to the storage facility yard. “Honey please stay here, the windows are open. Im just going to direct the movers to the storage unit okay? Im going to lock the doors though.” I said.

“Okay mommy.” He said nonchalantly.

I had organised with one of the guys who worked at the storage place to help me get some of the things we would need back to my parents house using his truck for a fee.

As soon as everything was neatly packed into the storage unit, I went back to the car to grab Kai then we sorted through his things to see what he would like to take. I sorted through mine and when we were done it was all loaded into the truck.

After locking the storage unit, the truck tailed me back to the house and the man and a friend of his helped to offload the boxes and Kai’s bed into the house. We spent the rest of the afternoon arranging Kai’s bedroom, when we were done it almost resembled his old room in New York.

It had been a long day so after supper with my parents, I got Kai ready for bed then I went to take a long shower, when I was done I put on my sleeping shirt and got into bed. I struggled to sleep, all I could think about was whether Stacy would tell my secret or not.

Eventually when I fell asleep I was plagued by nightmares of Xander rejecting me and laughing in my face as he threw bills of money at me, telling me to get an abortion. Then all of a sudden he wanted to take Kai away from me.
