Emma nodded, her mind racing. "I don’t even understand why Mrs. Williams promoted me after Jeff’s threats. It doesn’t make sense."
Sam glanced at her, his brow furrowed. "Maybe it’s a test. Or maybe Mrs. Williams knows something we don’t."
Emma swallowed hard. The weight of her new position was starting to settle in, but the mystery behind it gnawed at her. "We need to figure out what Jeff’s endgame is," she said quietly. "Why would he threaten me? What does he want?"
Sam paced the room, his mind clearly turning over the possibilities. "We need to dig deeper into Jeff’s connections. If Mrs. Williams promoted you, maybe she sees you as someone who can stand up to him. But we need to be prepared for whatever comes next."
Emma stood up from her desk, determination in her eyes. "You're right. Let's start investigating. We need to know what Jeff’s planning before it’s too late."
Just as she spoke, her phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number flashed on the screen; "You're in over your head. Walk away, or you'll regret it."
Her heart pounded. "Sam... I think we just got our first clue."
Mrs. Williams sat in her office, staring out the window, her fingers drumming lightly on the surface of her polished mahogany desk. The city skyline blurred as her mind drifted, replaying the events of the last few days. She hadn't intended for things to escalate this way, but a lot of forces at play even she couldn't control.
When Emma had first come to her as a personal assistant, she had recognized something in her, resilience. But she never imagined that Emma would become such a central piece in this dangerous game. Jeff’s threats were the tipping point. His sudden appearance had brought chaos to her carefully structured world. She clenched her fists at the thought of him. Jeff. He was unpredictable, but she knew his methods well enough to anticipate what was coming next.
Promoting Emma was a calculated risk. She hadn’t done it out of kindness or pity. Emma was the least expected choice, her innocence in this twisted web made her unpredictable, a factor Jeff wouldn’t easily account for. Mrs. Williams needed someone like that, someone who could move through the shadows without drawing attention.
But there was more to it. Mrs. Williams had her own secrets, and she knew they were teetering on the edge of exposure. Jeff knew too much, and his threats weren’t just aimed at Emma—they were aimed at her, at the empire she’d built brick by brick.
She rose from her desk, walking slowly toward the large window. The city lights blinked below her, but her mind was miles away, running through possible outcomes. If Jeff succeeded, it wouldn’t just be Emma in danger. Everything she’d worked for, everyone involved, could be taken down. And yet, despite the risks, she felt no choice but to push Emma into this position.
She sighed, shaking her head. The girl doesn’t even know what is going on. She thought of Sam, a loyal advisor, but someone who didn’t fully understand the depth of the waters they were swimming in. And she preferred it that way. The fewer people who knew the truth, the better.
Her phone buzzed on the desk. She walked over to check the message, her eyes narrowing as she read. "Emma just received the first warning. Are you sure about this?"
Mrs. Williams quickly typed a response, "Proceed as planned. We’re running out of time."
She placed the phone down and exhaled slowly. The next few days would be crucial. One wrong move and everything would collapse. But Emma—Emma might be the key to saving it all. Even if she didn’t know it yet.
Mrs. Williams stood at the window a moment longer, letting the cool glass press against her fingers. The weight of her decision pressed heavily on her chest. She was gambling, and the stakes were higher than ever. If Emma couldn’t handle what was coming, they’d all go down together.
She turned away from the window, walking back to her desk. Her mind drifted to Jeff again. He was ruthless and cunning—traits that once worked in his favor when they were allies. But now, they were on opposite sides of a conflict that had been brewing for years. It wasn’t just about power, it was about survival. And Jeff knew too much about her past. More than anyone else.
A sharp knock interrupted her thoughts.
“Come in,” she said, her voice steady as she straightened in her chair.
The door opened, and Sam stepped in. His face was tight with concern. “We have a problem.”
Mrs. Williams raised an eyebrow. “What now?”
“It’s Jeff. He’s not just threatening Emma. He’s digging into the company’s finances. He’s been accessing information—things that only someone from the inside would know.”
Her eyes narrowed. “Are you telling me we have a mole?”
Sam nodded grimly. “It looks that way. And if Jeff gets his hands on certain documents, everything could unravel.”
Mrs. Williams clenched her jaw. “I thought we had everything locked down.”
“We did. But Jeff’s connections run deeper than we realized. We underestimated him.”
Mrs. Williams leaned back in her chair, staring at the ceiling for a moment. “It’s always like this with him. He knows where the cracks are, and he knows how to exploit them.” She glanced back at Sam. “But we’re not going to let him win.”
Sam nodded. “What do you want to do?”
She tapped her fingers on the desk, thinking. “First, find out who’s feeding him information. If there’s a mole, we flush them out immediately. Second, we need to make sure Emma’s prepared for what’s coming.”
Sam frowned. “Do you really think she’s ready for this? She’s still new to everything. Jeff’s going to come after her hard.”
Mrs. Williams locked eyes with Sam. “She has to be. We don’t have time for doubts.”
“But does she even know why you promoted her? Why you’re putting her in the middle of this?”
Mrs. Williams sighed, a flicker of guilt crossing her face. “No. She doesn’t know the full truth. And for now, she can’t. The less she knows, the better. All she needs to focus on is handling Jeff. I’ll deal with the rest.”
Sam hesitated. “And what about the board? They’re already questioning the decision to make her head of the company. If they find out what’s really going on…”
“They won’t,” Mrs. Williams cut him off. “I’ll make sure of it. The board doesn’t need to know the details, and neither does Emma. All she has to do is stay strong, follow my lead, and we’ll make it through this.”
Sam nodded, but his expression remained tense. “I’ll start digging into Jeff’s contacts and see if I can trace the leak.”
“Good,” Mrs. Williams said. “And Sam… keep an eye on Emma. If Jeff gets too close, I want to know immediately.”
As Sam left the office, Mrs. Williams sat in silence for a moment, her thoughts racing. She had put everything on the line, and now Emma was at the center of it. But the truth—the real reason she had promoted her—had to stay buried a little longer.
She glanced at the drawer in her desk, hesitating for a moment before pulling it open. Inside was a folder, sealed and marked confidential. It contained the documents Jeff was after—the secrets that could destroy everything if they ever saw the light of day.
With a deep breath, she closed the drawer again. Not yet, she thought. Not until I have no other choice.
