Episode 11

1090 Words
It was late in the evening, and Emma sat in her living room thinking about the threat message earlier. I tried to focus on my kids, but the threat kept ringing in my head. my phone buzzed and hurriedly picked up to check if it was another threat. It was a news app notification, flashing a headline: “CEO Jeff Anderson Accused of Fraud.” Her heart raced. It was the same man she had been warned about. What had he done this time? Was he really capable of more than just intimidation? She opened the article with trembling fingers. Suddenly, a thought came to her mind. What if I turn the tables? What if I gathered evidence against Jeff instead of waiting for the next threat? But then the fear crept back in, was that not too risky? Getting evidence against the man I had kids with. Emma was lost in thought when her phone rang. It was Mrs. Williams. Emma answered, feeling a mix of anxiety and determination. “Emma, I just wanted to check on you. How are you holding up?” Mrs. Williams asked, her tone warm but with an undercurrent of urgency. “I—I’m okay. Just trying to process everything,” Emma replied, her voice steadier than she felt. “Good. I need you to keep your head clear. Trust me, we have a plan. But I need you to stay focused. Can you do that?” Emma took a deep breath. “Yes. I’ll do my best.” “Good. Remember, I’m here for you. We’ll get through this together.” As they hung up, Emma felt a flicker of resolve ignite within her. She couldn’t let fear dictate her life anymore. It was time to take control, even if it meant facing her worst nightmares. Emma stared at her phone, determination hardening within her. She will not let Jeff’s intimidation define her. If Jeff wanted to play games, she would learn the rules and maybe turn the tables. After putting the kids to bed, Emma settled onto her couch, the faint glow of her laptop light illuminating her face. She opened a browser and began to search for any useful information on Jeff, his past after she left him, his business dealings, and anything that could provide a clue about his current activities. As time went by, she stumbled upon an old article with a detail of a series of lawsuits filed against Jeff by his former partners. A case of fund embezzlement and betrayal, and the articles hinted further at something darker, such as money laundering and some connections to shady figures in the underground. Emma’s heart raced. This kind of information could damage Jeff, and protect her. She saved all the found articles and began to compile a list of questions for Mrs. Williams. They needed to put Jeff in his place and maybe it’s about time to do just that. Just then, her phone buzzed. Message from Sam: “Keep your head up. I’m watching. Let me know if you need anything.” She hesitated but then decided to reply: “I’m looking into Jeff’s article. There are things here, bad things I just discovered.” Sam’s response was immediate. “Be careful. Don’t go too deep alone. Jeff has connections.” Emma’s resolve wavered for a moment. She knew Sam was right. She knew Jeff was dangerous, and she didn’t have any resources to combat him alone. But she couldn’t just sit back and wait for Mrs. Williams to promise to handle everything. This was her life and children’s at stake. With all her findings, she decided to reach out to Mrs. Williams the next day. So they could strategize together. If they were going to confront Jeff, they needed a solid plan. Very early the next day, Emma arrived at the office, her mind buzzing with information. She spotted Mrs. Williams in her office, poring over documents. Emma knocked lightly before entering. “Mrs. Williams,” she said, taking a seat. “I’ve found some things about Jeff that I think we need to discuss.” Mrs. Williams looked up, her expression shifting from focused to intrigued. “Go on.” “I found articles about Jeff's past lawsuit claims of embezzlement and some other shady connections. I think this could help us.” Mrs. Williams rest her back, her brow furrowing in thought. “This is good, Emma. But we need to tread carefully. If Jeff gets what we are doing, it could escalate the situation and land us into a serious issue.” Emma sighed, understanding the gravity of her discovery. “I know. But if we can gather enough evidence, we might be able to protect ourselves and get him out of the picture for good.” Mrs. Williams’s eyes sparkled with a mix of admiration and caution. “I appreciate your initiative. We can’t let fear control us. But we also need to think about how we’re going to handle this without drawing attention.” As they brainstormed, Emma felt a sense of empowerment growing within her. They discussed potential allies, ways of documenting evidence discreetly, and how to ensure they are safe. Just as they were concluding their discussion, Mrs. Williams received a phone call. Her expression darkened as she listened. Emma was in a confused state, anxiety creeping in. Mrs. Williams ended the call and turned to Emma. “It’s Jeff. He’s been spotted near the office. We need to be extra careful.” Emma’s heart raced. “What should we do?” “First, let’s get you somewhere safe. I have security measures in place until we can figure out our next steps.” Emma’s belongings were quickly gathered and was led out through the side entrance. As they walked out of the premises, Emma’s heart was pounding. Jeff was close, and this was becoming all too real. My kids are with the nanny, I need to get them before making any move. Jeff is a very callous man. Once they reached the car, Mrs. Williams turned to Emma, her voice steady. “You’re going to stay with a trusted friend for a few days. I’ll keep you updated on everything. Remember, don’t panic. We’ve got this.” Emma nodded, but as she climbed into the car, doubt nagged at her. What if they couldn’t stop Jeff? What if this was just the beginning? “Focus on your kids,” she whispered to herself. “They need you.”
