David’s sobs echoed in the room, filling the air with a heavy sense of betrayal.
Emma stood frozen, her mind racing as she processed his confession while the others remained silent, their gazes darting between David and Emma, waiting for her next move.
Finally, Emma stepped forward, her voice cold and measured, “Explain. Now.”
David lifted his tear-streaked face, his words tumbling out in a panicked rush, “They….. they approached me months ago.”
Flashback to three months ago
David felt the hairs on the back of his neck standing, he was being watched by someone. He didn't know who or why but he didn't like it.
He thanked the barrister as his coffee was handed to him and immediately ran out of the café. He didn't want to draw too much attention to himself so he tried to be subtle about it.
Though anyone who watched him closely could tell he was walking faster than usual but that was just to anyone.
The moment he turned at the next corner, David knew he had walked into a trap. A bunch of guys, dressed in black suits and sunglasses, were waiting for him.
They stuck out like a sore thumb, so David made a move to turn around but he was stopped.
“If you take one more step, I won't hesitate to shoot you down.” He heard a voice say to him.
That made him pause in his steps and slowly, he turned around.
“What do you want from me? I don't have any money!” David said to them.
A hefty-looking guy stepped forward, removing his glasses and staring down at him, he chuckled lightly before he spoke, “Do we look like we care about your money?”
“So what do you want from me?” David yelled out.
“You'll find out soon.”
Present Day
“That was when they approached me and told me to do it and I didn’t want to do it, I swear but they threatened my family. I thought if I gave them just a little information, they’d leave us alone. I didn’t know it would come to this.” David cried out.
Emma’s fists clenched at her sides, “What information did you give them?”
David’s voice broke as he stammered, “Just… just logistics. Schedules. I didn’t know they were going to target your kids, Emma, I swear I didn’t know.”
Emma’s jaw tightened, her fury barely contained, “And the trap? Did you give them access to Marcus’s device?”
David hesitated, his guilt evident in his trembling frame, “They told me to, they said it would throw you off their trail.”
The room erupted in anger.
Marcus lunged toward David, his face contorted with rage, but Sam and Alex held him back, “You little traitor,” Marcus spat, “You put all of us in danger.”
“Enough!” Mrs. Williams’s voice cut through the chaos, sharp and commanding, “We don’t have time for this. David, you’ve compromised us all, if you want any chance of redemption, you’ll help us fix this.”
David nodded frantically, his desperation quite obvious, “I’ll do whatever you need. Just… please, don’t hurt me.”
Emma stepped closer, her gaze piercing, “You’re going to help us lure them in. Tell me everything you know about their communication methods, their patterns, their next moves.”
David swallowed hard, “They use encrypted channels, always changing the servers, but… but they told me to send them an update tonight. They’ll expect it.”
Emma’s lips curled into a grim smile, “Then that’s exactly what you’ll do.”
The team sprang into action, the tension thick as they devised their plan. Alex worked tirelessly on his laptop, creating a false report for David to send. Every detail was designed to draw The Collective closer, to make them believe they had the upper hand.
“This has to be convincing,” Emma said, leaning over Alex’s shoulder, “If they suspect a trap, we’re finished.”
Alex nodded, his fingers flying across the keyboard, “I’ve got it covered, this will look like the jackpot they’ve been waiting for.”
David sat nearby, his hands trembling as he clutched a mug of tea, Mrs. Williams watched him closely, her gaze calculating, “You’ll send the message exactly as we instruct,” she told him, “No deviations.”
David nodded quickly, “I understand.”
Emma turned to Marcus and Sam, “You two need to secure the perimeter. If they’re coming, they won’t risk waiting long, I want eyes on every possible entry point.”
Marcus grunted in agreement, still glaring at David as he left the room with Sam. The air was thick with mistrust, but there was no time to dwell on it.
If they were going to put an end to The Collectives, they need to let go of their current mistrust in each other and just trust each other to pull off the mission.
Hours later, the message was sent.
The cabin was plunged into an anxious silence, everyone tensed, everyone on edge as they waited for a response.
Emma paced the room, her mind racing with worst-case scenarios. What if The Collective saw through the ruse? What if they decided to strike immediately, bypassing their usual games? What if they were watching them right now? What if her children get hurt?
Her thoughts were interrupted by Alex’s voice, “We’ve got a hit.”
Everyone crowded around his laptop as he pulled up the data.
“They’re biting,” Alex said, his voice laced with both excitement and apprehension, “They’re routing their response through multiple proxies, but I’m tracking it.”
Emma’s heart pounded, this could be it, “How long until you have their location?” She asked.
Alex’s brow furrowed in concentration, “A few minutes. Maybe less.”
The room was silent except for the rapid tapping of Alex’s keys. Finally, he straightened, his expression grim, “Got it. They’re less than ten miles away.” He announced.
Emma’s stomach churned, “They’re that close?” She couldn't believe what she had just heard, they were right under her nose.
Alex nodded, “Looks like they’ve set up a temporary base, if we move fast, we can catch them off guard.”
Emma turned to the group, “We’re not waiting, Marcus, Sam, grab your gear, Mrs. Williams, stay here with David. Alex, you’re coming with me.”
David’s voice trembled as he spoke, “What if it’s a trap? What if they’re expecting you?”
Emma’s gaze was steely, “Then we’ll give them a fight they’ll never forget.” She said and with that, they all moved out of the cabin.
The drive to the location was tense. Emma sat in the passenger seat, her eyes scanning the dark road ahead. Alex drove in silence, his grip on the wheel tight.
“What if this doesn’t work?” Alex asked quietly, breaking the silence.
Emma’s jaw tightened, “It has to.” She said, although she wasn't sure who she was trying to convince.
Whether it was herself or Alex but she knew their plan just had to work, she couldn't imagine it not working out, so she had no other choice than to desperately cling to hope.
They arrived at an abandoned warehouse, its dark silhouette looming against the night sky. Marcus and Sam flanked Emma as they approached, their weapons at the ready. Alex stayed behind in the car, monitoring the situation through his laptop.
The team moved silently, their footsteps muffled by the thick grass. As they reached the building, Emma signaled for them to split up. Marcus and Sam took the back entrance while she approached the front.
The door creaked as she pushed it open, her heart pounding in her chest. Inside, the air was heavy with the scent of mildew and dust. She moved cautiously, her eyes scanning every shadow for movement.
A faint noise drew her attention, a muffled voice, followed by the soft hum of equipment. Emma followed the sound, her grip on her weapon tightening.
She turned a corner and froze.
A figure stood at a makeshift workstation, their back to her. The glow of a computer screen illuminated their features just enough for her to recognize them.
Her blood ran cold.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It was Alex.
Emma’s mind reeled as she stared at him, “Alex?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
He turned, his expression a mixture of surprise and regret, “Emma, I can explain.”
She raised her weapon, her hands shaking, realization clicking on her, “You too? You’re working for them? After everything?”
“It’s not what you think,” Alex said quickly, his hands raised in surrender, “I had no choice. They’ve got leverage on me Emma. My family…. “
“Don’t you dare use that excuse,” Emma snapped, her voice rising, “You betrayed us and you betrayed me.”
Alex’s eyes were desperate, “I’ve been feeding them false information for months. I’ve been trying to protect you, to protect all of us.”
Emma hesitated, her finger hovering over the trigger, “And yet here you are, leading us straight into a trap.”
“No!” Alex exclaimed, “I didn’t know they’d be here tonight, I swear. I thought I could redirect them, buy us more time.”
Before Emma could respond, a sudden noise echoed through the warehouse, the sound of footsteps, growing louder, they were no longer alone.
“Emma please,” Alex begged, “You have to trust me.”
She didn’t lower her weapon, “Trust is earned and right now, you’ve got nothing.”
The footsteps grew closer, and Emma made a split-second decision. She grabbed Alex by the arm and pulled him toward the nearest exit, “If you’re lying to me, you won’t make it out of here alive.”
Outside, Marcus and Sam intercepted them, their faces grim, “What’s going on?” Marcus demanded.
Emma didn’t answer, she pushed Alex toward the car, her mind racing. They needed to regroup, to figure out their next move but as they reached the vehicle, a deafening explosion rocked the warehouse, sending them all to the ground.
As Emma fell, she hit her head hard on the ground and all she heard was muffled sounds, she tried to open her eyes but she couldn't until finally, the darkness enveloped her.
