Episode 14

As they sped through the dark streets, Emma’s mind drifted to her twins. Jeff had barely acknowledged them in their early years, more interested in his schemes than in being a father. But now, that Jeff was aware of our location and our intentions, she feared he might try to use the twins to manipulate her. Suddenly, the car stopped as a thumping noise grew louder. “We’re losing a tire!” Mrs. Williams shouted, gripping the wheel tightly. They pulled over on a scary and deserted road, and the man scanned their surroundings anxiously. “We’re too exposed here,” he said. Just then, Emma’s phone buzzed. It was an unknown number—again. Fear gripped her heart, her hand trembling as she picked up the call. “Hello?” “Emma,” Jeff’s cold voice crackled through the line. Her blood ran cold. “You’ve taken something from me, you left with my PA and also worked with my rival to pull me down, now it’s my turn. I have the twins.” Emma’s heart dropped. “No… Jeff, you wouldn’t dare!” “Oh, but I would. They’re my children too,” he sneered. “You think you can escape with evidence against me and get away with it? Here’s what’s going to happen. You hand over the flash, and any other evidence you have against me and I’ll consider letting you see the kids again.” Deal or no deal? Mrs. Williams watched Emma’s face pale. “Emma, what’s wrong?” Emma’s voice shook. “Jeff has the twins. He’s threatening to keep them unless we give up the drive.” The man in the backseat’s expression turned grave. “He’s bluffing. Jeff’s known for intimidation, but he doesn’t have the leverage he claims.” “No,” Emma whispered, “this time, he’s serious. He’s never involved the twins before, but now that I’ve crossed him, he’s using them as pawns.” She felt an ache in her chest, a deep, raw fear for her children. Mrs. Williams took a deep breath, glancing at the flash drive. “We have another option. If we can make it to the safe house in time, we could transmit the data to law enforcement directly. Jeff wouldn’t know until it’s too late.” Emma hesitated. “But what if Jeff follows through on his threat before then?” The man in the backseat spoke up. “There’s one more card we haven’t played. Jeff’s associates—they’re not all loyal to him. I know someone who has dirt on Jeff, someone he’s double-crossed. If I can convince them to testify, we could put Jeff in a corner and force him to release the twins.” Emma’s mind raced. Could she risk waiting, knowing her children’s lives hung in the balance? After a moment, Emma nodded, determination flaring in her eyes. “Let’s do it. We gather every piece of evidence we can, and we force Jeff’s hand. He’s held the power for too long.” Mrs. Williams hit the gas, speeding toward the safe house. Emma’s hands shook, but she felt a surge of resolve. Jeff may have the twins, but she was determined to end his control—for her sake, and theirs. As they drove to the safe house, Emma clutched her phone, anxiously awaiting any news. She knew Jeff was capable of terrible things, but the stakes had never been this high before. Her twins were her world, and she wouldn’t let Jeff keep them trapped in his toxic web. They arrived at the safe house just as dawn was breaking. The man in the backseat, who Emma now knew as Alex, immediately set up his laptop to start contacting former associates of Jeff’s. “I’ll need a few minutes to reach out,” Alex said, his fingers flying over the keyboard. Mrs. Williams guided Emma as they entered the house, helping her calm down. “We need going to need you at your best,” she said gently, putting a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Your kids are counting on you.” Emma nodded, taking a deep breath to steady herself. Just then, Alex called out from the other room. “I’ve got a lead! One of Jeff’s old allies, Derek, agreed to meet us. He has proof of some of Jeff’s worst crimes, and he’s willing to testify—but he wants to talk in person.” Emma’s mind raced. “Do you think we can trust him?” “We have no other options,” Mrs. Williams replied. “If Derek’s willing to testify, it might give us the leverage we need to get the twins back.” They were back on the road, heading to a secluded meeting spot where Derek had agreed to meet them. As they drove, Emma’s phone rang again. It was Jeff. “Are you finally ready to cooperate, Emma?” His voice was smug, but there was an edge of irritation. “I’m ready to end this, Jeff,” she replied, her voice steely. “Let me talk to the twins.” “Oh, you’ll get your chance, as long as you follow my instructions. But I wouldn’t try anything clever, Emma. I know you too well for that.” The line went off, leaving Emma more determined than ever. They arrived at the meeting point on the outskirts of town. Derek was already waiting inside, nervously looking around to make sure everywhere was conducive. His gaze shifted uneasily between them. “I’m risking everything by meeting you,” he said, wiping sweat from his brow. “If Jeff finds out…” “He won’t find out,” Alex assured him. “If you help us bring him down, you’ll be protected. But we need to know everything.” Derek sighed, reaching into his jacket and pulling out a thick envelope. “This is a copy of every transaction Jeff tried to bury, fraud, even payments to some shady contacts overseas. He thought he could destroy it all, but I kept backups. You’ll find his fingerprints all over these.” Emma took the envelope, feeling a surge of hope. “Thank you, Derek. You don’t know what this means.” But just as she finished speaking, a dark SUV parked outside the diner. Her heart dropped as two men in suits stepped out, scanning the area. “It’s Jeff’s men!” Mrs. Williams whispered, pulling Emma and Alex back. Derek paled, glancing toward the back door. “I need to leave,” he said, panic in his eyes. “If they catch me…” “Go,” Alex said firmly. “We’ll handle this.” Derek bolted out the back just as the men entered. Mrs. Williams ushered Emma toward the exit, but they were stopped by one of the men blocking the door. “Going somewhere?” the man sneered, looking straight at Emma. Emma held on tightened around the envelope. She looked at Alex, who gave her a subtle nod, indicating he had a plan. In a sudden burst of movement, Mrs. Williams tossed her coffee onto the man’s face, causing him to stumble back. Alex grabbed Emma’s arm, pulling her toward the door as they ran outside. They dashed to their car and sped away before Jeff’s men could catch up. “We got what we needed,” Mrs. Williams said, breathless but triumphant. “Now, we just need to release this information to the authorities before Jeff can make another move.” As they drove back to the safe house, Emma received a text. It was from Jeff. “You have one hour. Bring me what I asked for—or you’ll never see the twins again.” Emma’s heart hammered. But with the evidence they now held, she had a chance to end Jeff’s control for good. Turning to Mrs. Williams and Alex, she said, “Let’s take him down—once and for all.”
