Mr. Blackwood’s grip on Cassian’s shoulder didn’t loosen immediately. It stayed there, firm and heavy, like he was measuring bone, muscle, truth. Naya forced herself not to react. If she flinched, she was done. The silence between them stretched too long. Then finally, Mr. Blackwood let go. “You feel different,” he repeated again, slower this time. Naya kept her expression steady. “I was shot,” she said carefully. “People change after that.” A pause. Mr. Blackwood studied her face again, deeper this time, like he was looking for something behind her eyes. Something invisible. Then he turned away. “Dinner,” he said. “Don’t be late.” He walked off without another word. The moment he left, Naya finally exhaled. Her hands were slightly shaking. Serena stepped closer from behind. “You survived that,” she said calmly. Naya frowned. “That didn’t feel like survival.” Serena looked toward the hallway Mr. Blackwood had left through. “It wasn’t,” she replied softly. Naya turned sharply. “Then what was it?” Serena’s eyes darkened slightly. “A warning.” …………………………………
