Chapter 5

634 Words
The echo of Evangeline’s voice hung in the air like spun glass. For five years, she had been a ghost in the corners of St. Jude’s, a shadow to be kicked or ignored. Now, her words seemed to carry a physical weight, settling over the ruined arena alongside the drifting ash of her disguise. Alpha Garrison didn't move. He stood frozen, his massive chest heaving as the gold in his eyes slowly bled back into a fierce, molten amber. The primal roar of his inner wolf had silenced, replaced by a quiet, vibrating possessiveness that hummed along the invisible bond connecting them. "Evangeline," he breathed, testing the syllables as if they were a rare vintage. Before she could pull away, Garrison closed the distance between them in a single, blurring stride. He dropped to one knee, reaching out a large, battle-calloused hand. He didn't grab her. Instead, his fingers hovered just millimeters from her jawline, as if afraid the vision of the radiant, golden-haired goddess would dissolve if he touched it. "Commander!" The sharp shout shattered the spell. Headmaster Vance burst into the arena, flanked by a dozen heavily armed elite enforcers. The old wolf took one look at the slaughtered rogues, the shattered windows, and the lingering traces of golden, ethereal mist before his eyes settled on Evangeline. Vance gasped, his eyes widening in a mixture of awe and immediate, calculating greed. "A high-fae hybrid... and a healer? Here? Secure her!" The enforcers instantly advanced, their silver spears lowered. "Step back!" Garrison’s voice exploded through the room. He didn't look at Vance. He didn't look at the guards. He simply stood up, placing his towering frame directly between Evangeline and the rest of the world. A dark, suffocating wave of Alpha pressure rolled off him, forcing the enforcers to drop their spears and stumble backward, gasping for air. "Garrison, she is an unregistered magical anomaly!" Vance protested, sweating under the weight of the Alpha’s aura. "She has been deceiving the academy for years! She must be interrogated!" "She is my mate," Garrison growled, a low, tectonic sound that vibrated from the floorboards. "And anyone who steps within an inch of her will answer to my claws." A collective murmur rippled through the surviving students. Tanya, still clutching her bleeding leg across the ring, stared at Evangeline with wide, uncomprehending eyes. The mute stray she had tormented was not only a breathtaking creature of legend, but she was now the protected sovereign of the most dangerous man on the continent. Evangeline felt the weight of the bond pulling at her, urging her to step closer to Garrison, to lean into the safety of his shadow. But the panic inside her was louder. "Garrison, listen to me," she said, her voice a sharp, urgent melody that cut through his protective fury. "The barrier didn't just fail. It was dismantled from the inside. The rogues were a distraction." Garrison turned his head slightly, his amber eyes tracking her words. "A distraction for what?" "For me," she whispered, her golden eyes flashing with a sudden, icy dread. "They didn't come to kill the students. They came to find the last pureblood lineage. The light from my healing... it was a beacon. They know I am alive now. And whoever sent them is already on their way." As if on cue, a distant, booming explosion rocked the foundation of the academy, followed by a dark, unnatural fog that began to pour through the shattered ceiling, blotting out the sun. Evangeline looked at her destined mate, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had spent half her life running from the monsters that slaughtered her family. Now, with her powers awakened and an Alpha warlord tied to her soul, she had a choice: run again, or stand and fight.
