Emily’s Pov What just happened!? One minute, I was in Mrs Josephine’s office and threatened to be fired if I didn't join the town task force. The next minute, I was shown to my temporary office that would serve me till the case was closed. “Welcome once again, Miss Carter. The first meeting will be soon, and you can get to meet your team members.” Agent Don tells me. I gave a smile, “Thank you, sir.” He gave a quick nod, and he left me to do what I had to do. I looked around the office. It was a little room with a table and chairs and air conditioning. It was painted white with little to no decoration. The mini fridge and coffee maker sat quietly on the side of the room, and the printer was behind me. I admired the office, “I can get used to this.” I said as I took out my stuff which was in the box. My laptop, notebooks, video and audio recorder, my little picture frame, and little flower vase for decoration. When I was done setting up, I looked around pleased with the way it all came together. I heard a lot of knocks on the door, “Come in!” The door was pushed up, and a young man, who was in his late twenties, walked in. I swear I choked on air how handsome he is. He reminded me of someone and my mind finally flashed to the horrible incident that happened some days back and the ranger. “Hello.” I greeted. He gave me a smile which I am sure could melt the hearts of millions of girls. “Hey .... I am Sergeant Jake; I am in the newly made task force. It is so lovely to meet the other girl on the task force.” he introduced himself with a smirk. “Hmmmm, another girl?” I asked. “Oh…you and the head of the task force are the only women, and we have been assigned together as a team, and we can report directly to her.” He broke it down. “Oh….. Sorry, where are my manners? Please have a seat, sergeant.” I pointed to the seat opposite me. He sat down, “Don't be modest, please, call me Jake. I still haven't gotten to know your name, Partner?” I gave a little chuckle, “Sorry about that; you just had so much information that I needed to process that I forgot. My name is Emily Carter, I am a journalist.” I said, stretching my hands forward for a handshake. He shook my hand with a smile and that’s when I noticed his golden eyes and the golden eyes of the ranger flashed in my mind. “I love your eyes.” I complimented. He leaned into his chair, “Thanks, that’s my best asset.” I could tell he flirts a lot. The ranger I saw in the forest was nowhere near as jovial as Jake was. “I see you are a real charmer.” He shrugged, “I try my best.” “You do remind me of someone though,” I said, and I, of course, saw him pause for a while, “Do you have any brothers?” He shook his head slowly, “Hmmm… No, I don’t.” “Hmmm, that’s odd; you look so much alike.” The room went silent for a while, “We should better get going, the task force meeting starts at 5.” He stood up and turned to leave. “Oh…. I am right behind you.” ………………………….. The door clicked shut behind Jake, and I quickly grabbed my notebook and pen, slipping them into my bag. My mind was still racing from the conversation. Jake’s resemblance to the ranger I’d seen in the forest was uncanny. Could it just be a coincidence? Or was there something more to it? I shook my head, trying to focus. The task force meeting was about to start, and I needed to be sharp. I followed Jake down the hallway, my heels clicking against the polished floor. He walked with easy confidence, his hands tucked into the pockets of his dark jeans. I couldn’t help but notice the way his shoulders moved, the way he carried himself. There was something magnetic about him, something that made it hard to look away. “So, Emily,” he said, glancing over his shoulder at me. “What made you join the task force? I heard you were… reluctant at first.” I hesitated for a moment, unsure how much to share. “Let’s just say I was given an offer I couldn’t refuse,” I replied with a small smile. “Mrs. Josephine can be very persuasive.” Jake chuckled. “Yeah, she’s got a way of making things happen. But I’m glad you’re here. We need someone with your skills on the team.” “Thanks,” I said, feeling a little flustered. “I’ll do my best.” We reached a large conference room at the end of the hall. The door was slightly ajar, and I could hear the murmur of voices inside. Jake pushed the door open and stepped aside, gesturing for me to enter first. I nodded in thanks and walked in, immediately feeling the weight of everyone’s eyes on me. The room was filled with a mix of people—some in uniform, others in civilian clothes. At the head of the table sat a woman who exuded authority. Her sharp eyes scanned the room, and when they landed on me, she gave a small nod of acknowledgment. “Ah, Miss Carter,” she said, her voice crisp and commanding. “Welcome. I’m Agent Harper, head of the task force. Please, take a seat.” I nodded and found an empty chair near the end of the table. Jake sat down beside me, leaning back in his chair with that same easy confidence. The meeting began, and Agent Harper wasted no time diving into the details of the case. “As you all know, we’re dealing with a series of unusual incidents in the forest surrounding our town,” she began, her tone serious. “There have been reports of strange lights, unexplained disappearances, and encounters with… entities that don’t seem human. Our goal is to investigate these occurrences and determine whether they pose a threat to the town.” I scribbled notes furiously, my mind racing. This was bigger than I’d imagined. I had thought it would be a simple investigation into some local legends, but this sounded like something out of a sci-fi movie. “We’ll be splitting into teams,” Agent Harper continued. “Each team will be assigned a specific area of the forest to investigate. Miss Carter, you’ll be working with Sergeant Jake. Your team will focus on the northern sector.” I glanced at Jake, who gave me a reassuring smile. Officer Ramirez, a tall, broad-shouldered man with a no-nonsense expression, nodded in my direction. “Any questions?” Agent Harper asked, her gaze sweeping the room. I raised my hand. “Do we have any leads on what these… entities might be? Or are we starting from scratch?” Agent Harper’s lips tightened. “We have some theories, but nothing concrete. That’s why we need you—your skills as a journalist might help us uncover information that others would overlook. Be thorough, and trust your instincts.” The meeting wrapped up shortly after, and the teams began to disperse. Jake stood up and stretched, his golden eyes meeting mine. “Ready to dive into the unknown, partner?” I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. “As ready as I’ll ever be.” As we left the conference room, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this case was going to change everything. The forest, the strange lights, the ranger who looked so much like Jake… it all felt connected somehow. And as much as I tried to push the thought away, I couldn’t help but wonder if I was in over my head. But there was no turning back now. The task force was counting on me, and I wasn’t about to let them down. Whatever was out there in the forest, I was determined to find the truth—no matter how strange or dangerous it might be.
