Lucas’s POV The forest was alive with whispers, the kind only I could hear. The rustle of leaves, the distant howl of the wind, the faint heartbeat of every creature within a mile—it all blended into a symphony that I had grown accustomed to over the years. But tonight, the forest felt different. Tense. Like it was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen. I stood at the edge of the clearing, my golden eyes scanning the darkness. The scent of pine and damp earth filled my nostrils, but beneath it all, I could smell her, Emily. Her presence was like a spark in the shadows, impossible to ignore. She had followed me, despite my warning. Stubborn, just like her father. I clenched my fists, the memory of that night flashing in my mind. The night I had failed to protect him. The night I had failed to protect her. I can’t let that happen again. Not to her, not to anyone. A low growl rumbled in my chest as I heard footsteps approaching. Heavy, deliberate. I didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. “You’re getting sloppy,” I said, my voice low and rough. “She almost caught you.” Jake stepped out of the shadows, his golden eyes glowing faintly in the moonlight. He looked different now—more guarded, more calculating. The boy I had raised was gone, replaced by a man who had learned to hide his emotions behind a mask of indifference. “I had it under control,” Jake replied, his tone clipped. “She’s not a threat.” “Not a threat?” I turned to face him, my gaze piercing. “She’s a journalist, Jake. She’s trained to dig for the truth, and she’s good at it. If she finds out what we are, what you are—” “She won’t,” Jake interrupted, his jaw tightening. “I’ll make sure of it.” I studied him for a moment, searching for any sign of doubt. But Jake had always been good at hiding his feelings. Too good. It was one of the reasons I had chosen him all those years ago. He was strong, loyal, and fiercely protective of those he cared about. But that loyalty could also be his downfall. “You’re too close to her,” I said, my voice softening slightly. “I’ve seen the way you look at her. It’s dangerous, Jake, for both of you.” Jake’s eyes flickered with something—guilt, maybe, or regret. But it was gone as quickly as it had appeared. “I know what I’m doing,” he said firmly. “Emily’s smart, but she’s not ready for the truth. Not yet.” “And when will she be ready?” I asked, my tone sharp. “When she is standing in the middle of a bloodbath? When she’s staring into the eyes of a rogue and realizing she’s in over her head? You can’t protect her forever, Jake. Sooner or later, she’s going to find out. And when she does, she’s going to hate you for lying to her.” Jake flinched, his mask slipping for just a moment. But then he straightened, his expression hardening. “I’ll deal with that when the time comes. Right now, my priority is keeping her safe. And that means keeping her out of the pack’s business.” I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Jake. The pack is already on edge. If they find out you’ve been keeping secrets—” “They won’t,” Jake said, his voice firm. “I’ve made sure of that.” I studied him for a long moment, weighing my options. I could push him, force him to see reason. But I knew Jake well enough to know that it wouldn’t work. Once he set his mind on something, there was no changing it. “Fine,” I said finally. “But if this blows up in your face, don’t come crying at me.” Jake smirked, though there was no humor in it. “Wouldn’t dream of it.” We stood in silence for a moment, the tension between us thick and unspoken. There was so much I wanted to say, so much I wanted to ask. But now wasn’t the time. Not with Emily out there, wandering the forest like a lamb among wolves. “You should go,” I said, breaking the silence. “Before she starts asking questions.” Jake nodded, his expression unreadable. “I’ll handle it.” He turned to leave, but I stopped him with a hand on his shoulder. “Jake.” He looked back at me, his golden eyes meeting mine. “Be careful,” I said, my voice low. “The forest isn’t the only thing that’s dangerous.” Jake held my gaze for a moment before nodding. “I know.” And with that, he disappeared into the shadows, leaving me alone with my thoughts. I stood there for a long time, staring into the darkness. The forest was quiet now, the whispers fading into the background. But the tension remained, a constant reminder of the storm that was brewing. Emily was a wildcard, a variable I hadn’t accounted for. She was smart, resourceful, and far too curious for her own good. If she kept digging, it was only a matter of time before she uncovered the truth. And when she did, there would be no going back. I clenched my fists, the weight of my responsibilities pressing down on me. I have spent my entire life protecting this pack, this forest. But now, for the first time, I felt like I was losing control. Like the walls I had built were starting to crumble. And there was nothing I could do to stop it. --- The next morning, I found myself standing at the edge of the forest, watching as the sun rose over the horizon. The air was crisp and cool, the kind of morning that made you feel alive. But I couldn’t shake the unease that had settled in my chest. I had spent the night patrolling the forest, keeping an eye on Emily and Jake as they made their way back to town. They had been quiet, the tension between them palpable. But they had made it back safely, and that was all that mattered. For now. I turned and began to make my way back into the forest, my mind racing. There was so much to do, so much to prepare for. The pack was growing restless, the rogues were becoming bolder, and Emily was getting closer to the truth. I needed to stay focused. I needed to protect my pack and my family. But deep down, I couldn’t help but wonder if it was already too late. As I disappeared into the trees, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the storm was closer than I thought. And when it finally hit, there would be no escaping it. Not for me. Not for Jake. And certainly not for Emily.
