Fated.

Mates. He made it sound like we were wild animals. “What do you mean by that? Mates? We only met a few days ago.. how could you possibly already call us mates?” I released his grip. I could see the obvious pain in his eyes at my release. “I don’t know how to explain it to you Clover. It doesn’t normally happen like this.. we’ve only ever been fated to our own kind.. I .. I only know how I feel.” His fingers inched towards mine. Mine recoiled to my chest. “Your own kind? Am I not good enough for ‘your kind’?” I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of anger at the thought. I may have grown up poor but I’ve come a long way from the commune. The silence was deafening and my anger was rising. “Well?” I chirp. Kieran cleared his throat and laced his fingers. “Clover I’m from a long line of Alpha werewolves, my family in particular would be what you might consider ‘Royal’.. my father is the current King where I’m from..” I swallow but unfortunately there isn’t an ounce of moisture. “Did you say werewolf.. like full moon.. changing into a dog.. Twilight sort of situation?” I don’t know why my brain went there but it was my only form of reference. I could see the smile slowly creep back on Kieran’s face. “Twilight really did us a disservice but in essence.. yes.” .. Am I supposed to believe this? The look on my face must have been obvious. “Look I’ve never had to explain my world to anyone outside of it.. I know how crazy I sound right now.. let me take you outside and I’ll prove it.” Without hesitation he took me by the hand and led me out my back door. My backyard was overgrown with various flowers and vegetables. I’ve always seemed to have a particularly green thumb. Kieran stepped out into a patch of my green beans. His eyes seemed to plead with mine as he spoke. “Please don’t panic Clover.. I’m fully in control of my wolf.. you don’t have to be afraid.” I watched as the bones in Kieran’s arms and legs snapped into position. It was too intense, I had to close my eyes. When I re-opened them, I nearly fainted. Before me was the most terrifyingly large wolf I had ever seen. It stood well over 7ft tall with long silky black hair. As it approached me I took a hesitant step backward. It bent its head towards my arm and touched its wet nose to my palm. It was taking everything in me not to pass out from fear. That’s when I caught sight of the wolf’s eyes.. the same green speckled hazel as Kieran’s. It all was clicking in my brain. I’m not crazy. This is real. With that realization.. my eyes went black. …… When I came to, I was back in my bed tucked under my comforter. Either I’m having some vivid hallucinations or that just happened for real. If the former.. I need some strong meds.. if the latter.. I at least need a stiff drink. Rubbing my eyes, I sat up in my bed a little too quickly and instantly saw stars. I noticed a black shadow shift in the corner of my room near my chair and I froze. It rose from the chair and walked into the light.. “Clover.. are you okay? It’s me..” The tall brooding figure slowly dissolved into Kieran. My heart began to pump at its original pace. I sat fully erect and rubbed my eyes again for good measure. “I’m so sorry did I pass out or something?” I question wondering how I got here. “For good reason.. in shouldn’t have sprung this on you like I did.. it was too fast.. I..” He had made it to the end of my bed and began to reach for my face. I put my fingers to his lips. “So you mean to tell me that wasn’t a dream..?” It felt like I might throw up. “It wasn’t a dream my love.. what can I do to help you?..Are you hungry?” I glance over at the clock.. 3:17pm.. s**t I’ve been out for a while. It was then I felt my stomach rumble. “Yeah.. I could eat..” He stood from my bed. “You take a minute for yourself and I’ll get the car ready for us.. I’ll take you wherever you want to go.” With that he left my room. I managed to stumble over to my bathroom and splashed water over my face. I tore off my sweatshirt and shorts and went to grab anything else from my dresser. I was able to find my old Camp Corral t-shirt from my junior year and a soft pair of black leggings. From the looks of my hair.. there was no saving it. I finger combed a center part in my wavy mess and twirled it into a clip I found laying on the floor. Suddenly I felt embarrassed Kieran had seen my room. It wasn’t the worst.. but it definitely needed some TLC. We collectively decided to head to the small cafe on the other side of town called Georgia’s. They had the best chicken soup I’ve ever tasted and right now I needed a little bit of comfort food. As the waitress sat my bowl in front of me, I could feel his eyes searching for mine. I took a spoonful of the delicious warm soup into my mouth and felt the heat slide down into my stomach. My eyes couldn’t restrain themselves. “Are you okay with this? What can I do Clover?” His soft eyes were pleading with mine, my heart couldn’t take it. “So what does it mean to be mates in this whole thing? I know you said we’re mates but how can you know that if we’ve just met?” My question still sounded ridiculous but I genuinely wanted an answer. “As a werewolf, we are fated from birth to find out one true mate.. our one true love if you will. We can feel the connection the second we come in contact with them. I felt it as soon as I stepped inside that vets office.. something was drawing me here but I didn’t know what it was.. until I saw you.” He gently pushed away a free stand of hair behind my ear and sparks tingled the side of my face. I leaned into his hand. “But I’m not a werewolf.. so how are we mates?” “I don’t know Clover.. I’ve heard about wolves choosing human mates but.. I’ve never heard of being fated to one..”
