Secrets in the Snow

1174 Words
The ski resort glowed under the pale light of dawn, its slopes glittering with freshly fallen snow. Emily awoke to the soft sound of Lily’s laughter echoing from the next room. Stretching, she pulled back the heavy quilt and made her way to the cabin’s small kitchen, her body still sore from yesterday’s skiing. “Mom! Ryan’s making pancakes!” Lily announced, running in with powdered sugar dusting her nose like snow. Emily paused, raising an eyebrow as she peeked into the kitchen. Sure enough, Ryan stood at the stove, flipping pancakes with a surprising amount of skill, his flannel sleeves rolled up. “I figured you deserved a break after yesterday,” Ryan said, glancing over his shoulder with a grin. “Besides, I owe you. Lily tells me you’re better at skiing than I am.” Emily smirked, grabbing a mug for coffee. “I may have improved since your last lesson, but don’t let it go to your head.” “Too late,” Ryan quipped, piling pancakes onto a plate. As they sat down to breakfast, the cabin door opened, and Ethan stumbled in, looking disheveled but smug. “Did I hear someone say pancakes?” he asked, rubbing his hands together for warmth. Ryan slid him a plate. “Made extras.” “Good man,” Ethan said, before turning his attention to Emily. “So, I just talked to Maggie. She’s back at the house and said to tell you not to come back without at least one embarrassing story about Ryan.” Emily laughed, shaking her head. “I’ll see what I can do.” Ryan groaned. “Great. I feel the love, really.” Lily, oblivious to the banter, tugged at Ryan’s sleeve. “Can we go sledding today? Please?” Ryan ruffled her hair. “Of course. But only if your mom and Ethan join us.” Ethan raised his hands. “Oh, no. I’ve seen what happens when I sled with you people. Last time, I ended up in a snowbank.” “That’s because you thought it was a good idea to race me,” Emily shot back. Ethan grinned. “And I’d do it again.” The mood was light and easy as they prepared for the day, but Emily couldn’t shake the feeling that something was about to change. The sledding hill was packed with families, the air alive with laughter and the occasional shriek of someone taking a tumble. Lily clung to her sled, her excitement palpable as Ryan helped her to the top of the hill. “Ready, kiddo?” he asked, crouching down beside her. “Ready!” Lily exclaimed. With a gentle push, he sent her gliding down the hill. Emily watched from the bottom, her heart soaring with Lily’s laughter as she sped toward her. “She’s fearless,” Ryan said, coming to stand beside Emily as Lily hopped off her sled and started trudging back up the hill. “She is,” Emily agreed, her voice soft. “She gets that from you.” Ryan turned to her, his brow furrowing slightly, but before he could respond, Ethan’s shout broke the moment. “Hey, lovebirds!” Ethan called, holding up his phone. “Group photo! Get over here!” Emily rolled her eyes but followed Ryan toward Ethan. They stood together, Lily squeezing between them with her red cheeks and wide grin. As Ethan snapped the photo, Emily felt Ryan’s arm brush against hers, the warmth of his presence grounding her amidst the cold. But as the day went on, Emily’s unease grew. It wasn’t until they returned to the cabin that she understood why. Later that evening, while Lily dozed off on the couch after a long day of sledding, Emily found herself sitting with Ethan by the fire. Ryan had gone outside to take a call, and the cabin felt quiet, the weight of unspoken words filling the space between them. “So,” Ethan said, his tone cautious. “Have you thought about what I said?” Emily sighed, running a hand through her hair. “About telling Ryan the truth? Yeah, I’ve thought about it. It’s all I’ve been thinking about.” “And?” Ethan pressed. Emily hesitated, staring into the flames. “I’m scared, Ethan. What if he doesn’t want to be part of her life? Or worse, what if he does, and I lose her?” Ethan leaned forward, his expression serious. “You’re not going to lose her. But you can’t keep this secret forever, Em. It’s not fair to Lily—or to Ryan.” Before Emily could respond, the cabin door opened, and Ryan stepped back inside, brushing snow from his hair. He seemed distracted, his usual easy demeanor replaced by something more tense. “Everything okay?” Emily asked, standing. Ryan nodded but didn’t meet her eyes. “Yeah. Just… work stuff.” Ethan raised an eyebrow but didn’t press. Instead, he stood and stretched. “I’m calling it a night. Try not to kill each other while I’m gone.” As Ethan disappeared down the hall, Emily turned back to Ryan. “What’s going on? You seem… off.” Ryan hesitated, his jaw tightening. “It’s nothing. Just a lot on my mind.” Emily crossed her arms, her voice gentle but firm. “Ryan, if something’s bothering you, you can tell me. We’re friends, right?” He looked at her then, his eyes searching hers as if weighing whether to speak. Finally, he sighed, running a hand through his hair. “It’s not about me,” he said quietly. “It’s about you and Lily. I’ve been thinking about what it means to be here, to be part of your lives again. And I can’t help but feel like there’s something you’re not telling me.” Emily’s heart stopped, her breath catching in her throat. She opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out. Ryan stepped closer, his gaze steady. “Emily, if there’s something I should know… now’s the time to tell me.” The silence between them stretched, heavy and unyielding. Emily felt the weight of the truth pressing against her chest, but fear held her back. Before she could decide what to say, Lily stirred on the couch, her soft voice breaking the tension. “Ryan?” she mumbled sleepily, rubbing her eyes. Ryan turned, his expression softening as he knelt beside her. “Yeah, kiddo?” Lily smiled, half-asleep. “You’re the best snowman builder ever.” Ryan chuckled, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “Thanks, Lily.” Emily watched them, her heart aching with both love and guilt. She knew she couldn’t keep the truth hidden much longer—not when it was already starting to unravel. As Ryan carried Lily to bed, Emily made a silent promise to herself: no more running, no more hiding. It was time to face the past and the future, no matter what it might bring.
