Chapter 5 “Are the kids asleep?” Candy asked. She was sitting at the small writing desk in their massive bedroom, which could have been a suite in itself, with a massive four-poster and a new sectional in front of a fireplace that Neil couldn’t remember ever having been used. He loved the colors, the red and gold, the dark wood, and the local native art covering the walls. “Bathed, fed, watered, and tucked in for the night,” he replied. “Cat was out by the time her head hit the pillow, snuggled in beside little Becky, and she was out, too, by the time I finished that last story. Michael dropped off to sleep before he finished his bottle.” Neil loved his children and enjoyed these moments when he could be a part of their lives, doing the small things he realized his brothers never did.
