Chapter 5: A Step Forward
The morning of Christmas Day is crisp and cold, the kind of cold that bites at your cheeks and makes you want to stay wrapped in blankets forever. But I can't stay under the covers today. There's a knot in my stomach that refuses to let me rest, a mix of excitement and fear.
Lily is bouncing around, her energy boundless as she drags me to the kitchen to help with the preparations. My mom is already there, humming a Christmas carol as she stirs a pot of something delicious. The scent of cinnamon rolls and roast turkey fills the air.
"Mom, can Ethan come over later?" Lily asks, her voice full of hope as she sets the table.
I glance at my mom, who raises an eyebrow. She’s been quiet since last night, but I know she's been watching me closely, trying to figure out where this thing between Ethan and me is going. I’ve been avoiding the topic, unsure of what to say.
"Is Ethan coming, Catherine?" my mom asks, her voice gentle but insistent.
I hesitate, stirring the coffee in front of me, not meeting her eyes. "I don't know," I say finally. "He... he might."
Lily practically jumps up and down, her face lighting up. "He has to come! He’s the one who gave me the snow globe!"
I chuckle, though my nerves are still on edge. "I know, sweetheart, I’ll call him later. But you know we have a lot to do first."
"Okay," Lily says, her voice full of determination. "I’ll make him the best spot at the table."
---
The morning passes in a blur of cooking, laughter, and the familiar warmth of family. We play a few rounds of board games, then sit down to a hearty Christmas dinner. There’s a small part of me that’s missing from this picture, a part that only Ethan could fill. But as I look around at my parents and Lily, I realize how lucky I am. They make everything feel whole, even when there's a hole in my heart.
"Mommy, when is Ethan coming?" Lily asks as we clear the table. She’s sitting with her snow globe, happily watching the glitter swirl inside it.
I glance at my watch. "Soon, sweetheart. You can go play in the living room while we finish up here."
"Okay!" she says, darting off.
I breathe out a long, slow breath, finally letting myself relax. It’s crazy how much Ethan has already changed things. In just a few days, he’s come into my life like a storm—sweeping away the dust of old memories and replacing them with something that feels like... hope.
The doorbell rings, and my heart skips a beat. I stand up quickly, too quickly, and almost knock over a glass of water. My mom shoots me a knowing look, but I don’t care.
Lily is the first one to reach the door, her face glowing with excitement. "Ethan!" she exclaims, opening the door wide.
He smiles down at her, holding a small wrapped gift in his hand. "Merry Christmas, Lily," he says, kneeling to hand it to her.
"Thank you, Ethan!" she says, hugging him.
I watch them interact, feeling a warmth in my chest. He’s so good with her—effortless, natural. And I can't deny the way my heart flutters every time he looks at me.
"Hey," he says softly, standing and turning his attention to me. "Merry Christmas."
I swallow hard, suddenly nervous. "Merry Christmas," I say, trying to smile. "Come in. Dinner's almost ready."
"Smells great," he says, stepping inside and taking off his coat. His eyes scan the room, landing on Lily as she happily unwraps the small toy inside her gift.
"She loves that snow globe," I say, my voice softer than I intended.
"She deserves it," he replies. "She’s a bright kid."
I nod, stepping aside to let him in. "Thank you for everything, Ethan. Really."
"No need to thank me," he says, his voice warm, his gaze lingering on me in a way that makes my heart race. "I want to be here. For you, for her."
---
The evening goes by in a blur of laughter, shared memories, and a surprising amount of food. It’s not often we have a guest for Christmas dinner, especially someone like Ethan—someone who’s no longer just my brother’s best friend but someone who seems to be creeping into my heart without me even realizing it.
"So, Ethan," my dad says, his voice playful as he leans back in his chair. "Tell me, what’s your plan for the future?"
I freeze, my fork halfway to my mouth. Ethan glances at me, his eyes flickering with amusement before he answers. "Well, I’m focused on my work right now. I just bought a house nearby, so I’m getting settled."
"Nice," my dad says. "You staying in town long?"
"Not sure," Ethan replies. "Maybe a while. Depends on what happens next." His gaze shifts to me again, and something unspoken passes between us.
I try to ignore the tension bubbling between us, but it’s hard when all I want to do is reach out and touch him, to let him know that I feel the same way.
After dinner, we move to the living room, where we gather around the fire. Lily is curled up on the rug, her head resting on her knees as she watches us.
Ethan leans against the wall, watching me, his gaze steady. I can feel the pull between us, an invisible thread tying us together, one I’m afraid to follow.
"Do you like it here?" I ask, trying to break the silence.
"I do," he says, his voice soft. "It’s nice to be around people who don’t ask too many questions."
I look at him, surprised by his words. "What do you mean?"
He shrugs, his eyes not leaving mine. "I’ve spent a lot of time alone, Catherine. People have expectations, and sometimes, it’s hard to live up to them."
I nod slowly, understanding more than he knows. "I get that."
---
As the night wears on, my mom and dad retire to bed, leaving Ethan and me alone by the fire. Lily is already asleep on the couch, her breathing soft and even.
Ethan looks at me, a serious expression on his face. "Catherine," he starts, his voice low. "I need to know something."
My heart races in my chest, a mixture of dread and anticipation. "What is it?"
He steps closer, his presence filling the room. "Are you ready to take a chance on us?"
I swallow hard, unsure of how to answer. Part of me wants to leap into his arms, to throw caution to the wind and embrace whatever this thing between us is. But another part of me— the part that’s been burned before—wants to hold back, to protect my heart.
"I don’t know," I admit, my voice barely above a whisper.
Ethan reaches out, gently cupping my face with his hand. "I’m not asking for anything big, Catherine. Just… the chance to show you that I’m here. For you. For Lily. If you’ll let me."
My breath catches in my throat, and for a moment, everything feels still. The world fades away, leaving only him and me in this small, quiet room.
I close my eyes, letting his words wash over me. There’s so much fear, so much uncertainty, but there’s also something else—a spark of hope that maybe, just maybe, this could be the beginning of something real.
I open my eyes to find him still watching me, his gaze steady, patient. "Okay," I whisper. "Let’s see where this goes."
