This topic will have several parts, because there are so many things to say and there is no way I can fit them all in one chapter.
I decided to start with this topic for two reasons. The first is that I kind of fit into it too, that's because I'm a girl, and the second is that I was kind of into it and still am.
What is feminism?
Girls required dowries, were much less likely to be sent to school, were forcibly married off, and did not inherit anything.
Girls were taught from an early age to do household chores. That is until a certain age, usually eighteen. Then they were married.
Except that they didn't decide who she married. It was the parents who found the boy for a girl, especially the girl's father. She was not entitled to an opinion.
But to be desired by a boy, the girl had to be a virgin. At that time there were no contraceptive methods, so a man had to have proof that the children his wife gives birth to are really his. And the only method by which it could be achieved
this was the abstinence of the girl until marriage and then the submission of the woman to the man.
The father and the future husband set the price that the girl had. That is, the future son-in-law gave a certain amount of money to the girl. Girls were treated like commodities and marriage was a kind of business.
After marriage the woman had to be subservient to the man. Women had no jobs and depended on men. Even if they were r***d or beaten, they did not have the right to divorce. If a woman divorced, it was considered a shame for her parents, who did not welcome her home.
A divorced woman was considered worthless. She had no money to raise her children, who most likely stayed with the man because he supported the family financially. If a woman was beaten by a man and left him to her parents' house, they would send her back to the man. It is considered that a man is allowed to beat his wife. Instead of the woman being defended, people found the man reasons and excuses for aggression. Parents could not bear the shame that divorced women were believed to bring, especially if they were from the countryside. The mouth of the world mattered more than one's own girl or girls.
Rape has been around since the dawn of man. In the old days, although women were clothed to the neck, r**e was the order of the day. The worst part was that if you were a woman and you were r***d, you were often blamed. Rarely was the man punished. There were, however, also methods of t*****e for rapists. One of them was an iron pear. It was a pear-shaped instrument with several blades. At the end was a handle that could be twisted. As the executioner twisted the handle, mine came apart more and more, tearing every form of tissue. Usually one did not die quickly after using this tool. But the infection could bring death. But this tool was used more for homosexuals or bisexuals than for rapists. The pear was inserted into the anus for rapists and homosexuals, into the v****a for adulterers, and into the mouth for liars.
Parents usually chose boys with money. I think the reason is obvious. But it also happened that girls fell in love with poor boys. Then they would run away with them, stay hidden for a few days, marry secretly, after which they would come to the girl's parents who, most of the time, would give them their blessing, since the girl was no longer a virgin. I have read and heard such stories. I think this is also where the stories of poor boys and rich girls or poor girls and rich boys were invented.
Females were considered the property of men. They had absolutely no right.
Women could also be accused of witchcraft. There were also cases of men being burned at the stake, but fewer. Three quarters of the victims of burning at the stake were women. And some of the reasons why women were accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake are considered perfectly normal things today.
Some of the reasons why a woman could be accused of witchcraft were: if they managed to get their money somehow, had too many children (meaning if you were a woman, the neighbor couldn't have children and you still did, you were definitely a witch), if you dated with several women without the presence of a man, and if we were still talking about intimate relations and virginity, you could also be accused of witchcraft if you had s*x outside of marriage.
That's why feminism was invented. A movement that fought for women's rights. Due to this movement, women gained legal rights and began to be considered as human beings.
I said "to be considered human" because, in those days, women were treated worse than animals. They were considered second class citizens.
I wanted to give this explanation because there are people who wonder why it's called feminism if they're supposed to still be fighting for equality. The answer is because it was invented during the time when women had no rights.
Even though we have evolved a lot and nowadays we, girls and women, are treated much better, we are still discriminated against.
I have seen people say that there is no legal right that women do not have. Somehow it is, but feminism is also about how women are treated in society, not just about legal rights. And in society we still face many ugly things like: r***s, domestic violence, live meat trafficking and toxic mentalities. That's why people who say that feminism is no longer relevant in today's society are wrong.
I will write about the situations in which women are discriminated in part.
